Lykes House | Frank Lloyd Wright

Wright’s relationship with Arizona and the Sonoran Desert spanned many decades. The state hosted a number of his residential projects for private clients. One of these was the Rose Pauson House of 1940, which was lost in a fire, and has been described as one of Wright’s most accomplished rural homes. The final house designed by Wright also belongs to Arizona. It was accomplished by Norman and Aimee Lykes for a prominent hillside with views out across the distant city of Phoenix. Wright himself died in 1959, leaving his plans, which were executed almost ten years later by one of his apprentices, architect John Rattenbury. Woven into its hillside setting, the house was designed with a series of concentric circles, reminiscent of Wright`s Guggenheim Museum (1959) in some respects but also of the ‚hemicycle‘ houses built late in his career. One of these circular forms creates a turrent pushing outwards from the hill and hosts the master suite. Another holds the main living space and leads out to a third circle, where the walls - punctured by porthole windows - shelter a private terrace. A sequence of bedrooms sits wihtin the curvaceous linking zone between the two turrets.
