Might be pushing it here, but can we hear some trivia like facts about Ruby? Things like fav color, song, tv shows, etc?

This is a weirdly difficult question! Mostly, I think, because all of Ruby’s favorites were the favorites she had pre-camp, and after that point she wasn’t exactly in the position to be watching movies or TV shows, you know? I always hesitate to use any culture references unless they’re classics/long-running shows (for example, the classic rock songs, mentions of Wheel of Fortune re-runs in IN TIME, etc.) because I don’t want to exactly place when this is happening in the readers’ minds. Does that make sense?

When I say I know the character extremely well and they feel real to me, I really mean the information I know about them has a lot more to do with their life experiences—sort of like random glimpses of memory that make up who they are as people. Things like how Ruby lost all four of her front teeth at once when someone tripped her while she was playing kiddie soccer at age five. If you would have asked her at age nine what she wanted to be when she grew up, she would have said an FBI agent because she met a cool lady while going to the police station with her dad for Take Your Child to Work Day. She can’t stand the smell or taste of creamed corn after eating so much of it to spite her mom (who told her she needed to eat more than that for dinner) she spent half a night throwing it up.

Chubs was too scared to learn how to ride a bike as a kid so he still doesn’t know how to, he’s allergic to cats despite being somewhat obsessed with them (he’s really obsessed with most cute baby animals, to be honest), and never had chicken pox so he lives in actual terror of it every day.

Everything Liam knows about cars is because Harry (his step-father, who worked in a mechanic shop after leaving the Army) took him under his wing and taught him to avoid him continuing down a troubled path after Cole. Liam used to indulge Claire at every turn and play Barbies with her—and he’s the one that found her when she didn’t wake up that last morning. He was bullied relentlessly in sixth grade by kids at school and his brother, and the bullying at school didn’t stop until Cole (who was apparently okay with no one else giving him crap) ‘dealt’ with them one afternoon.

Zu’s parents were strict about speaking only Japanese at home and she struggled a bit in school since English was her second language. She once got lost at Disneyland when she was very, very young and her parents left her alone for hours alone to teach her a lesson about wandering off (she had a great time by herself, which only made them angrier). The only thing she grew up afraid of was the ocean and only because her uncle (the one who lives in California) jokingly told her that jellyfish eat little girls’ toes.

It’s interesting, because as much as I can tell you about who they were pre-camps, the experiences they had there, and then after, on the run, were so formative to who they are that it feels like they’ve all lived two very different lives.

the very first page drew me in. the world was so dark, so utterly heartbreaking and tragically sad. these characters, each of them, were so well rounded and so real, their flaws and strengths and motives. they made me cry, they made me laugh, they had my heart in ruins, but they also filled me with hope.

ruby was amazing. i loved her to bits, and her development was the best one. she inspires me every day with her strength, compassion, resilience and kindness. she is the best character EVER written.

i also love her dynamics with everyone close to her. the romance was one of my favourites (liam ily so much) but more than that i loved the friendships. the black betty gang invented the word found family?

could i ever talk about tdm without talking about cole? no. the character i'm attached to the most. no words are enough to express how much he means to me. i think the tumblr posts, edits, tweets, fanfiction, headcanons & fan art commission speak for themselves.

there are book that you love and then there are books that literally help you get through life and tdm is the latter.

Sport Dads

- Alex once said that Ruby’s dad (Jacob) was going to be a high school sports coach. Its still cannon that he took Ruby to his old school’s games and knew all the chants. 

- Liam said that ruby should meet “sports fan Harry” because they guy does nothing by half measures

- I can just imagine them getting together to watch a game and getting HEATED

-  like screaming at the other team, starting waves, getting snacks, painting their faces, Talking about it afterword, talking statistics–I’m talking to whole 9 yards. 

- Meanwhile Liam and Ruby feel like 3rd and 4th wheels to their own date. 

- Liam also totally bullshits some stuff to ruby to seem cool and to get Ruby to laugh

- “ya so that’s the quarter back and there’s the half back and the full back. they need to run a 401k to get a good score but they can do that because the moons in the wrong place so they’ll just pull a double O 7 and run to base for a time out”

- Ruby learned sports from her Dad and knows its absolute bullshit but loves to add things of her own

- “ya ya ya but they might be able to put Janson to middle and make him do a quarter 3 turns loop loop to get them some life points and win the game taking home the winning coins”

the amount of activity in the tdm fandom right now is amazing because it’s exactly what this series deserves

The darkest minds week; day 3: Family Day;

- You chase the bad things away. With Cole, he understood the dark I could never shake. I used to think he was the kind of person that wasn’t afraid of anything, but he’s scared of his own shadow, Liam. I don’t think I understood until tonight just how scared he was of you really seeing him. - But that’s so unfair. I know it’s not right, but I hate him for thinking that me and Mom and Harry.. that any of these kids who basically worship the ground he walks on, would love him less. I wish he’d trusted us. He could have had support in this. Nothing’s changed for me. I couldn’t get him out.. we got inside, we were taking pictures, one of them saw us and we couldn’t get away.. they shot him. He fell down and I couldn’t get him out, I tried to carry him….

I’m like 3/4 through the darkest minds (first off I love it) but I need to get through the series quick bc I have so many theory’s and I need to know if I’m right or not.

I don’t know if I trust Clancy at all, he seems too nice and idk pike he’s manipulating everyone but I could also be completely paranoid but also I don’t trust him
