Hello! Really appreciate your choices and the care with which you scanlate! I am helping a friend with cleaning and we have a disagreement over the approach we should take regarding special effects. My philosophy is that 90% of the time the Japanese characters are chosen/styled to integrate with the drawing of the panel, so it makes more sense to leave them be and discreetly translate them on the side. I noticed that your approach is to clean everything very carefully and typeset with creative fonts. What led to this choice? :)

I think both choices, whether leaving as is or typesetting them, are right. Personally, I'd always wanted to make a work look like an "official" English version as a challenge and since then couldn't stop. On principle, (as I think this is the only right way to typeset them) I try to pay as much respect the original as I possibly can, like below ↓
(This example is an overhaul I've been working on behind the scenes and as such won't be live for a while, but it was the best one I readily had on hand. Forgive;;)
It's a lot of extra work, but it often provides context to a scene that might otherwise be lost. So a discreet note on the side is a perfectly fine time-/work-compromise to me.
I doubt this will help solve your issue, as these things are very subjective, but hopefully it can give you some perspective? Maybe? Regardless, I wish you the best with your project!!
