Second Place

something said by asian moms in those 90’s movies

something said by me when my friends are joking around about something dumb

something i think constantly about myself

never being first

always being a close second

second to other girls

other friends

other family

other jobs

“second place is first loser”

and hey maybe a little more effort next time and you’ll get first

but maybe a little more effort next time will just hurt

second place is for the ones that tried and tried

over and over again

and still failed

“second place is first loser”

but maybe take lessons

study under first place

try again

and maybe second will get first

but they will never really know what it feels like to win

no matter what

they will always be second

the first place winner quits because they already won

quitting makes room to climb

“second place is first loser”

but can’t we stop saying that

second place put in their all

second place tried

second place still won

second place will never be seen in a bad light

second place is better than last

second place deserves where they are

second place is not first loser

second place is what it is

second place is second winner
