Splinterjak As immortal offspring of the Sky's Moon egg, Jaks can be torn apart thoroughly yet reconstitute into various minor and greater forms.
The smallest motes of Jak dust live on as Splinterjaks, barely visible miniscule serpents propelled by their umbilical cords. They travel as sparkling swarms in the wind, bodies passively whistling odd tunes that makes one's skin form bumps.
They are harmless physically, but can cause nightmares and anxiety in those in earshot of the creatures. Their appearance is often associated with nocturnal omens and concerning visions.
Though most flying things must sleep at night lest The Sky smite them for defying it, Splinterjaks are too small to be seen by it's countless star eyes and can freely seek the moonlight that comforts them. There they mingle and dance until enough gather to merge and form a larger Jak, or join to an existing one.
Truly massive swarms are know as "Moon Winters", appearing like glassy snowstorms that obscure the land. Such events, unless halted by the gods or likewise forces, may birth the mightiest of Jaks.

Hi all! My artwork “New Perspectives” is up for auction in the 14th Annual UPwithART fundraiser supporting Unity Project London and Museum London here in Ontario!
You can view this piece in-person at the Museum's exhibition from April 26 to May 3 – free admission. Save the date for the arty-party on May 4 and get your tickets and/or donate now at UPwithART.ca !
This event will help support the unhoused members of our community access shelter and move to permanent housing as quickly as possible. Support would mean a lot for this cause. :)

This is a Willoh (short for "will-o'-the-wisp"), these pelagic squilloids live in the deep sea in large schools but at night travel up in the watern column following the movement of smaller animals and Altamiran zooplankton which they feed on.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
their bioluminescence not only confuses predators as they swim in large schools in the dark, but also as social signalling to let other Willoh know where they are, their schools can be millions strong and comprise a significant part of Altamira's marine biomass.

Simon Roy (@simon-roy) asked me to invent a guy (alien organism) for his newest book, Refugium, which comes with a guy emporium (alien life guidebook). There’s a kind of radially symmetrical bug called pinwheels on the planet that will split into wedges as a defensive mechanism, so I Junji Ito'ed them into a eusocial spiral that workers snap off of once “ripe.”
Refugium is out on Kickstarter right now and if you like alien ecology, failed utopias, and frontier stories I can highly recommend it. I’ve greatly enjoyed the previous books from the same universe.
