Small rant/annoyance/pet peeve of mine:

I hate it when I express my interest in orcas and people say, “Yeah orcas are cool and all, but I don’t like them as much because they’re mean and they kill things.”

They’re. Animals. They’re predators, and THE top predator of the ocean at that. They hunt to survive, they do it very well in a highly sophisticated manner. Their cultures revolve around their complicated hunting knowledge. I don’t see you crying over lions or wolves or fucking velociraptors, and they kill things too (or killed, in the case of velociraptors)! Hell, humans kill WAY more than any of these species.

Usually I gently and briefly explain orca behavior and culture, explain how not all orcas hunt mammals, etc. etc., and STILL people often walk away with the remaining notion that orcas are just giant assholes of the sea.

Mrph.

It hurts to grow. Anybody who tells you it doesn’t is lying.
