the smile on her lips faltered for brief second, emotions tripping over themselves on her face before she could sort them out to flick her usual doubts && confusion back down to the bottom of the deck. joyce forced her happy face to bounce back with her usual odd sweetness but something lingered around the edges of her eyes that made her feel off kilter as she replied. “ oh honey, you don’t need to worry about that. “ goodness knows the girl had been through enough. all the kids had this last year && she was going to be damned if she was laying any guilt trips on their shoulders right now. there was enough of that waiting at home for some of them. the grapevine of hawkin’s had always been a double edged sword. she’d been feeding the town's curiosity for years but enough had been filtered back to her about the rest of them. it was not a source of pride what she knew like some of the other parents but she used the guilt to try && do better. to be better. “ seeing you kids safe together is all i really want right now, okay? “
