Even with Aoi’s clearly less than thrilled reaction, Date only rolls his eyes. First of all, he’s not that old, and second of all, he’d like this permanent night bullshit to end as soon as possible. It’s bad enough that his body refuses to sleep when it’s actually night; he doesn’t have time to deal with what he’s sure will become even worse insomnia.

“You’re the one who agreed to come with me, so stop being a baby about it.”

He takes a sip of his drink (water, but if you asked he would say it’s vodka), looking at the aforementioned locals, most of whom aren’t paying the slightest bit of attention to them. 

“The bartender said the disappearances have all been around the Eastern Gate, right? I’m not going to pretend I understand how anything works around here, but maybe there’s some mystical moon power bullshit going on. We could check the library--that’s safe enough, isn’t it?”

One of the only parts of the castle available to the general public is the Royal Library, and it’s probably the best place to look for information about...wherever the hell they are. And whoever the hell the Sages are. Which is what Date’s been trying to research for a while. He’s now blessed by some Patron Sage called Cloud--which is cool--but he wants to know what exactly that means. 

All the information he’s found so far has been the basics. 12 Sages, born from the elements...blah blah blah something something elemental gemstones. 

“Ugh, none of this is any help. Seriously--where’s the world map? Where’s Japan?”

Date’s bad habit of speaking out loud seems to have attracted attention yet again. 

“Uh--sorry. Were you wanting this book?”

It seems he’s struck out at the Fantasy Costco-Denny’s, and at Fantasy Target, and pretty much any other stores he can think to stop at. Not a single Odoroki-man chocolate. Now he’s wandering through the stalls of the Southern Market, looking for something familiar. 

And from the looks of the person next to him, he’s not the only one.

“Are you looking for something from where you’re from too? I was looking for a chocolate. It, uh. It’s something my daught--roommate likes.”

Date’s never owned a pet. Or rather...he can’t remember owning a pet. (And no, the clione and Aiba didn’t count.) Still, something is keeping him crouched at the entrance to an alleyway, attempting to coax a cat to come towards him. 

It’s a Persian. He thinks? Maybe? Whatever it is, it’s fluffy, and he’s doing his best to get it to come towards him. He doesn’t have much in the way of snacks or treats on him, but he’s been making those stupid noises you always end up making when you’re trying to get a cat to come to you. 

“Pspspspsps... c’mere... C’mere you pretty little thing...”

And then he becomes hyper aware of the fact someone has stopped next to him. Oops. He hopes she doesn’t think she was talking to her. Seriously could you imagine going “pspspsps” at a person

“Ah--I was. Trying to get the cat. I don’t know what they like but...”

He just really wanted to pet it. And maybe adopt it.

Date’s not really one for horror movies. He...might have a bit of a fear of ghosts, but who doesn’t? Right? Especially in these terrifying uncertain times with people just disappearing at night. But also he wants to find something to watch because he’s more than a little bored, and maybe scaring the shit out of himself will be a fun activity. 

That being said, he looks at the description on the back of the case he’s holding before setting it back on the shelf. He’s not the only one in the aisle at Fantasy Target, and he ends up speaking out loud before he can stop himself (usually because he isn’t alone anyway). 

“I think describing ‘unimaginable horrors’ as ‘disappointments’ in the movie title is putting it a bit mildly.”

Date’s used to waking up in places with no memory of how he got there. And that’s...uh...well that seems bad, in all honesty. Still, as deep in thought as he is about “how the hell did I get here” and “at least I have my left eye” (albeit without Aiba and definitely still prosthetic), he manages to find his way to his apartment with little to no issues. It’s a bit larger than the one he’s used to sharing with Mizuki--it’s not a studio apartment at least. Two separate bedrooms and a living room? 

...Yeah he probably should’ve upgraded to something like this a long time ago. 

He spends a long moment looking through the apartment. It’s furnished, but it feels...peculiarly empty. Unpersonalized. As if no one had lived her for a very long time. In a way it feels...cold.

The door clicks open behind him, and he turns, expecting to see his new roommate. And perhaps part of him is just expecting it to be Mizuki, home from school and looking ready to kill him for making her wait--which is why his reaction is so bad. 

“Holy crap you’re hot!”

The words come out of his mouth before he can even stop it, but still can you blame him?? His roommate looks like a model--one of those people you see in a magazine and know they could never be real except--oh fuck. They’re looking right at him. 

“Ah, er, the--room? It’s kind of--hot? Right? Ha--HI! I’m Kaname Date, I’d like to meet you--I mean nice to meet you?”
