Kevin helf the phone in one ear, keeping his hand still on Joaquin's arm. He shook his fiance a little as his brows furrowed at the apology. "Hey, don't. Don't apologize for them. I didn't think they'd be like this, either, no one thought."
His dad picked up then, so he had to move his attention to the conversation, but he trailed his hand over to the back of Joaquin's neck to comfort him. It couldn't feel great, your pack turning on you like this, and Kevin could hear his thoughts, he knew there was so much hurt there.
He talked to his dad briefly, explained the situation, and in a few minutes he was hanging up again. "We can meet him halfway, it's at a stop four hours down. He's putting a protecting spell on us, if he can. Hopefully they can't track us then."
proschema‌:
Kevin knew there was something wrong with the way the serpents approached them. It wasn’t a friendly meeting. Even if they did want to get Joaquin back, they were definitely planning to do it in some terribly twisted way, otherwise they wouldn’t have gotten to them like that, sending Fangs ahead. Maybe they had intentions to just kill the witch, in hopes they’d get their brother back. Kevin wasn’t ruling anything out.
“Yeah. Yeah, I’m gonna call him,” he nodded, taking his phone and dialing already, reaching out a hand to squeeze Joaquin’s arm. “It’s gonna be okay. I don’t think they’re following us.”
Joaquin wanted to believe that too, but how did they find him where they were? They had taken so many steps to hide themselves, it made no sense that the serpents were catching up. His brain went a million places it shouldn’t  be, but he tried hard to shake the feeling.
“Alright. Yes. I’m sorry. I thought they’d be the least of our problems.”

Kevin threw the bags into the backseat, their contents probably flying all over the car, but they could deal with it later. He dove into the car and helped Dick’s landing as he made his way in last second. Not that he wouldn’t be able to just meet them wherever they went later, but Kevin felt safer having his familiar with him at all times.
“Fuck,” he breathed once they were on the highway, looking back anxiously. They all had bikes, they could still come after them. “What the fuck did they even want?! What is their plan, killing you? What the fuck is happening?”
“I don’t know,” Joaquin said as he gripped the steering wheel with both hands, his knuckles white. His mind was racing with a million different things, mostly how he hadn’t been able to hear or feel anything from any of the Serpents that had come around. He knew the pack would hate that they’d left. But remove him from the pack entirely?
“I think they were trying to bring me back, maybe,” he tried to lie to himself at least a little. Maybe it would ease that blow some. He should have been expecting it, really. But after everything he’d done for the Serpents?
“We need to get to your dad now. He’ll know what to do. There has to be some sort of… warding spell or something.”

Jesus Christ, fuck this. Fuck this. Were they out here to kill them just because Joaquin ran away? They were worse than Kevin thought.
The witch only waited for Fangs to look away and get distracted before he was blowing his spell out, sending the man flying off a good dozen feet. It would knock the air out of him and hopefully give all the serpents something else to worry about while they ran.
He dove back into the room to gather their bags, glad that they hadn’t even had the time to unpack into this shitty room anyway. Dick was already out, flying qukckly and viciously to make a round and warn Kevin of how close the others were. “Go, go, go,” he hissed, running out of the room and already charging more useful spells he could use if they couldn’t make it to the car as easily as he hoped.
Joaquin would never not be surprised by the sheer power of Kevin’s witchcraft. Not that he expected anything else, but even after all these years it was jarring to see a man fly 20 feet backwards due to seemingly nothing. But he didn’t exactly have time to sit here and tell Kevin that, instead he went straight for the car.
“Just throw everything in,” he pointed to the backseat as he started the car. “We’ll sort it out later. I’ve got Polo, let’s go.”
He was mostly talking to himself. Kevin always seemed to have his shit together, but still.
When they were both in the car, Dick flying in through the window at the last second, Joaquin jammed on the gas just as a couple of Serpents rounded the corner. A second too late, thank goodness, because Joaquin moved right around them with ease and got them back on the road.
Running. Again.

Kevin felt his heart drop to his stomach as he heard whatever the hell Fangs was thinking. It didn’t seem to make sense but it didn’t sound any good. He’d wanted to believe the man meant well, but he knew deep down this was all too weird to be a harmless visit.
“Fangs,” he tugged Joaquin’s wrist to pull him back, slid up in front of him swiftly, between the two werewolves. Dick cawed and moved over to his witch’s shoulder. If anyone had a better chance of protecting them, it was Kevin. He was already charging a spell to push Fangs away at the tiniest suspicious movement. “What are you doing here? Who sent you? Keep your hands up or I swear I’m blowing you the fuck away.”
Joaquin looked surprised for a second when Kevin stepped in the middle of things, but only for a split second. His brows furrowed and he looked at Fangs, a sense of true betrayal running through his whole system. Fangs looked a little surprised, but instead of looking at Kevin, he started to look behind him like he expected more people to come.
“I’m grabbing the dog,” he directed at Kevin, hoping his shield was down. “And the keys. Make a run for the car, the rest of the serpents are here.”
And before Fangs could make another move, Joaquin dove for the puppy, trying to grab as much stuff as he could before bolting for the car.

Kevin would never speak up on it, but he really didn’t trust Fangs. Never had, even back in high school, specially not after he always seemed to be trying to pull a move while Joaquin was exiled. He let his shield down to search for the man’s thoughts carefully, just in case.
“And you couldn’t just call?” He furrowed his brows. Totally not shady to just track a couple down to a motel far away and then pretend to be housekeeping to be let in. “Joaquin’s place was under attack. All my spells were taken down.”
When Kevin put down his shield, there was a very clear sense of panic inside of Fangs. He was clearly trying to keep his thoughts guarded, but little whispers of “do it” and “now” and “wait” were still able to come through.
If Joaquin wasn’t so surprised, he would have noticed how he didn’t hear any of Fangs’ internal dialogue at all. Whatever pack he had was gone, so there was no pack mindset anymore either.
Joaquin looked at Kevin before turning his attention right back to Fangs. He truly thought this man was his friend, he had no reason to doubt him. “We had to run. We had no other choice.”

What could Fangs be doing here? How did he even find them? Dick flew over to perch over Joaquin’s shoulders and stare at the newcomer threateningly.
“What’s going on?” He called, stepping closer to his fiance, reaching out to take Joaquin’s wrist.
Joaquin tried to hide it, but your emotions were always on full display to a fellow pack member. And Fangs could tell Joaquin was ready to fight, really fight, if need be. The guy held his hands up in surrender and took a step back.
“I’m not here to hurt anyone, I just came to see if you were okay. You guys ran pretty quick last night,” he shifted from foot to foot, looking more nervous as the seconds went on. “It made the pack… antsy.” He looked to Kevin and chewed his lip a little. “Are you guys… coming back? Did something happen?”

Kevin was perfectly content just staying right there for a while, too. Dick was still just waking up, Polo had gone back for a nap by their feet, things were calm and quiet for once. It felt like being home again, for a split second.
“Yeah, he’s definitely up already at this point,” he stretched out to grab his phone from the nightstand, still keeping one arm secured around Joaquin. He had a couple texts from him already. “We should start getting up.”
Joaquin really didn’t like the idea of getting up and doing anything. Sure, that was probably the right thing to do at this point but there was a part of him that wanted to hold onto the idea that if they never left this room, they wouldn’t ever have to face reality.
“Housekeeping!” came the knock on the door again. Joaquin groaned a little bit before sliding out of bed and padding to the door to let what he was hoping would be a little old lady or someone, but actually turned out to be someone much more menacing.
“Fangs,” he said, his blood going cold. “What– why’re you here/”

Kevin gladly moved into that hold, wrapping his arms around Joaquin’s shoulders and pulling him in close. Polo tried interrupting their embrace by jumping around, but the witch pushed him aside with a chuckle. Things felt okay again, for this quick second.
“No way. Not after checkout already,” he sighed, hiding his face into Joaquin’s hair with a happy hum. “We can stop at an ihop or something.”
Joaquin nodded and then stilled, content to just hold Kevin there for a minute. He could tell that day would hold chaos, more running. But for now, they could be quiet.
“You should call your dad or something,” he said. “Find out where he is so we can meet him. Make sure he’s alright, you know.”

Dick made his rounds and all, but before he could even be back in the room, Kevin had already passed out. All it took was his familiar’s approval of the area and the witch was out for good, Dick had to let himself in so he could spend the night perched on the chair Polo decided to sleep in.
The sound of someone at the door in the morning sent him sitting up in a hurried panic, eyes wide and trying to take in as much as they could even though he was half asleep still. He glanced at Joaquin, then at Dick, and noticed the bird seemed unbothered – a little bit annoyed his sleep had been disturbed, if anything. He felt his shoulders relax down, even if his heart was still beating wildly.
“Were you gonna murder someone with a pillow?” He asked between quiet giggles, his voice still groggy with sleep. He accepted the hit and slumped back into bed with a lazy groan. Polo rushed over to jump into bed and greet him with excited morning kisses. “Fuck it, we deserved it. Did you sleep? What time is it?”
“It’s five minutes past checkout time,” he said before rolling towards Kevin and hooking both of his arms around the other’s middle. He squeezed tight, clearly not in any kind of mood to let go. “You can’t make me get up.”
It was easy to feel so light in these moments. He had only just woken up, the seriousness of what they had been through yesterday just hadn’t quite settled in yet. It felt a little bit like going on a vacation, the first one they had ever actually been able to go on together.
“Think their free breakfast is up and running?”

It was what they did best, keeping it together when the other couldn’t. He was scared shitless and he wasn’t sure they could do it, but he had faith in Joaquin and in what they had. He knew they would do their best.
“I suppose so,” he nodded, combing Joaquin’s hair and leaning down to press a kiss to the man’s forehead. “We’ll survive. We have each other. And Dick and Polo, now, too.”
As if on cue, Polo came to their side with a decorative pillow in his mouth, looking for praise. Joaquin didn’t have the heart to tell him to knock it off, so he just wrinkled his nose and said, “You don’t know who’s gross butt has sat on that, Polo, gross.”
He looked up at Kevin and rest his chin on his stomach, giving a happy, lazy sigh in the split second where he managed to let go of the reality of what was going on.
A few minutes later, they were both asleep. And they were safe. Whatever entity that had been following them gave up a while ago and had returned to Riverdale, hopefully forever. And even if they were both still on edge, they didn’t need to be. At least not for now. For a few hours, they could sleep.
They were woken up the next morning by the sound of a rapping at the door. Joaquin, eyes still mostly closed from sleep, sat up and grabbed the closest weapon he could find: a pillow. He was about to rush the door when he heard, “Housekeeping!”
With a sigh, he relaxed and whacked Kevin with the pillow. “We overslept.”

Kevin happily stood between Joaquin’s legs, one hand fitting into his hair and combing it back, untangling the wet strands carefully. “Greendale seems fun.”
“And that’s not true, you’re good at a lot of things. And you worked at construction that one summer. I’m sure FP would still be willing to put in a good word for you if you needed,” he sighed a little again. “I haven’t exactly worked anywhere, either. Except for retail when I was 16 or something. We can make it work. Right?”
There was something to be said about someone who believed in you even when you didn’t believe in yourself. Joaquin felt a little better, just having admitted his fears out loud. But when Kevin chimed in, it felt doable.
“Yeah,” he said with a little nod. “We can do it.” Then he looked up at the other, meeting his eyes. “We’re going to have to. There’s no going back now, right?”

Kevin really wanted to be in a more trustworthy bed where he could just sleep naked, but it felt weird in this one. He didn’t trust this motel enough to let his junk free under the covers tonight, so he slipped on his boxers and a loose T-shirt.
“I don’t know,” he sighed, and there was a terrible knot in his stomach. It didn’t feel wrong leaving Riverdale, he knew they couldn’t go back, but it was scary not knowing where to go next. “I have money. I have some that mom left me. I think it’s enough to get us started somewhere, at least get us a place.”
Joaquin rubbed the back of his neck as he sat down on the edge of the bed, parting his knees in order to pull Kevin between them. He wrapped his arms around Kevin’s middle and pressed his forehead against the other’s belly. “I wish Greendale wasn’t so damn close to Riverdale. I have some friends there, people who aren’t huge fans of the serpents in the first place.”
He thought about what starting over meant, his brow furrowing. “How’m I ever supposed to get a real job? I’ve got no legitimate job experience. I’m good at, what, exactly? Serving milkshakes and dealing pot.”

“I don’t think I could stay awake if I tried,” Kevin sighed, finishing up his cleaning. The water was already starting to grow colder on them by the second, so they probably shouldn’t push it.
He stepped out carefully and threw a towel over his shoulders before holding the other one open for Joaquin, too. He didn’t even have the energy to dry himself properly, he just wanted to slip into some PJs and sleep for days (realistically they’d sleep like five hours). “Where do we go? Y’know. After we meet with my dad, after he goes back in there to take care of things. Have you thought about it?”
Joaquin took the towel and dried off thoroughly, trying not to think of all the other people who had used this towel before him. He wasn’t exactly afraid of germs or anything, but there certainly was something to be said for the nastiness of a gross hotel.
After a second, he spoke. “I thought about it a lot, actually,” he said. “Had to fill that quiet time with something other than anxiety, y’know?” He was silent as he dug through his bag for some comfortable clothes and, blessedly, clean underwear. “The truth is that I don’t know. It’s not like we’re exactly rolling in cash. The only other time I had to start over from scratch, I had the serpents behind me.” He slipped on his clothes and chewed on the inside of his lip before looking over at Kevin. “Where do we start?”

The longer he let Kevin work that soap in his hair the more heavy he felt his eyes get. He yawned, thankful that the water wasn’t hot, because otherwise he would be absolutely falling asleep right now.
He wasn’t sure how he felt about waiting for the morning to contact sheriff Keller. If nothing else, he knew they’d be safe when they found him.
“Fine,” he agreed after a second. “Only if you promise to actually sleep tonight. you’re no help to anyone if youre exhausted.”

Kevin's fingers worked the shitty motel shampoo into Joaquin's hair before tipping his fiance's head back to rinse it out. It was a shame they were ruining such perfect locks with this terrible shampoo. Kevin made a mental note to buy Joaquin some nice hair mask or something, he deserved it.
"I think we should wait until the morning. Until we're on the move again. That way if anyone tracks us, we'll be out by the time they get here, anyway," he murmured, taking his time to wash himself now, too. "I already warned him we were stopping to sleep somewhere safe."
proschema‌:
Kevin may be shivering under this water temperature, but it felt good to finally get water running down his body. With all of the stress and sitting in a car, he just felt like he had a thick layer of dirt all over his body.
“That’d be so perfect,” he sighed, stepping over so Joaquin could use the water stream, too. At least this was a motel and the shower was big enough for the two of them.
He turned around to take Joaquin’s face in hands and kiss him briefly before letting his fingers slip up to help washing his hair out. “I’ll send Dick to make a few rounds before we go to sleep, see if he can find anything. But I think we’re safe.”
The thing of it was, Joaquin believed him. He trusted Kevin’s instincts more than he trusted anyone else’s, even his own sometimes. Joaquin, growing up in a wolf pack, had never exactly been taught to trust a witch, after all it was all superstitious bullshit, right? Except Joaquin had seen first had how powerful Kevin was, and knew that if Kevin truly believed them to be safe, they probably were.
“Right,” he said, his eyes closing a little when he felt familiar fingers glide through his hair. He probably could have fallen asleep standing up, right then. He’d only just noticed how tired he was.
“Do you think it’s safe to call your dad?” he asked as he started to rinse soap off of his body. “To know when it’s safe to meet up?”
