so many times i see trans peoples chosen name stories involve really deep meanings and stuff, and that’s great and all
but. literally i chose elliott because when i heard it in an episode of family guy i was like “oh hey that name sounds dope”

I think one of the saddest things I have ever realized is that the first time I was ever alone with my father, I was twelve. He and I went on a road trip together, and my mother fretted for the entire three weeks. Before I left, she encouraged me to wet the bed at night -- I hated her for this. As a twelve-year-old, it was humiliating. But now I look back on other experiences and I understand. Before I went to any sleepover, she made sure to clear that there were no men in the house. If she had somewhere to be and there was no woman that could stay with me, she would not go. Regardless of whether it was someone she generally trusted (her brother, her father, the man she married), I was not to be left alone with any man.
The most heartbreaking thing is that keeping me away from men was a necessity for her. Not because any of these men had done anything, per se, but because of the experiences she had -- that all women have. My father once fought her about her distrust for men. I remember being relatively little and holding on to the idea of a certain thing she said: “It’s not that I think you will do it. It’s that all men are capable of it. And how do I not worry about that after everything I’ve seen?”
