Theresa May to face vote of no confidence from Tory MPs
Tumblr media
UK Prime Minister Theresa May faces a vote of confidence in her leadership later after 48 of her Conservative MPs called for one to be held. But a defiant Mrs May vowed to contest the vote "with everything I have got". She warned that a new prime minister would be faced with the choice of "delaying or even stopping Brexit".
Webmaster's insight:
A majority of Tory MPs have publicly said they will back the PM in the vote, which runs for two hours from 18:00 GMT, but it is a secret ballot.

Historic Madeira bottling fetches nearly $16,000 at auction
Tumblr media
A ‘quart’ bottle of The Lenox Madeira, imported to Philadelphia in 1796 by Robert Lenox and originally bottled in 1798 before being re-bottled in 1888, sold for $15,925 at the Christie’s auction in New York. Two more bottles of the same fortified wine fetched $14,700, meaning all three lots sold for close to double Christie’s’ pre-sale high estimates of $8,000. Christie’s results for the 7 December auction also show that several other bottles of the Lenox Madeira beat pre-sale estimates.
Webmaster's insight:
A cache of centuries-old #Madeira discovered in New Jersey during renovation work has been auctioned by Christie’s, with one bottling from the late 1700s selling for nearly $16,000, while the same auction was also declared a 'watershed' moment for rare American whiskies

UK restaurant closures accelerate to over 10 a week
The number of restaurants in Britain slipped by 2% over the year to September 2018, the new edition of the Market Growth Monitor from CGA and AlixPartners has revealed. Research showed that Britain had a total of 26,892 restaurants at September. The net fall of 539 restaurants marked an “acceleration of closures” since the start of 2018, when the restaurant sector was still in year-on-year growth. This figure is equivalent to more than 10 closures a week.
Webmaster's insight:
The Market Growth Monitor showed that all licensed premises saw a decline in numbers with pubs and bars closing at a faster rate than restaurants

Cadbury's gold egg sells for £6,500 at auction
Tumblr media
A 22ct gold and enamel Cadbury's egg has sold at auction for £6,500. The engraved egg was part of the Creme Egg Mystery Conundrum, a promotional treasure hunt by Cadbury's to find 12 eggs in 1983. Seller, Clive Pinder from Dorset, found the egg 35 years ago at Cricket St Thomas, Somerset. He said: "It was astonishment that we had succeeded." It was sold earlier at Duke's Auctioneers of Dorchester - it had been expected to fetch up to £8,000.
Webmaster's insight:
The dozen eggs were buried around the UK - people had to solve clues hidden in an accompanying book to find them. #Cadbury

Albert Einstein's 'God letter' reflecting on religion auctioned for $3m | Science | The Guardian

A handwritten missive by Albert Einstein known as the “God letter” fetched almost $3m at auction on Tuesday. Christie’s auction house in New York stated on Tuesday afternoon that the letter, including the buyer’s premium, fetched $2.89m under the hammer. That was almost twice the expected amount. The one-and-a-half-page letter, written in 1954 in German and addressed to the philosopher Eric Gutkind, contains reflections on God, the Bible and Judaism.
Webmaster's insight:
Missive that calls the Bible ‘a collection of primitive legends’ was expected to fetch only half that much #Einstein

Eiffel Tower's spiral staircase fetches €169,000 at auction
Tumblr media
A section of the Eiffel Tower’s original spiral staircase has sold at auction in Paris for €169,000 – smashing its estimate. The segment of 25 iron steps was expected to fetch between €40,000-€60,000 by auction house Artcurial but ended up going for almost three times the amount.

Antiques Roadshow Painting stolen after featuring on BBC show caught in legal battle
Tumblr media
Just a week after the painting was given an estimate on Antiques Roadshow, the painting was stolen. The painting was stolen from a house in Great Yarmouth 30 years ago, just one week after it had appeared on Antiques Roadshow. It had been valued at £20,000 in January 1998 before the theft. Jan Davey, 69, the daughter of the late owner and antiquarian bookseller David Ferrow told how, at the time, she and her father believed thieves had recognised the painting from the BBC show.
Webmaster's insight:
#AntiquesRoadshow viewers who have turned into the show for years with excellent memory may remember the programme featuring a portrait of Mary Emma Jones by Emma Sandys back in 1988.
