haru grew up idolizing this household name and takes much pride in his culture and family honor. his abilities were always cherished in their home and he grew up to appreciate the world in its most organic form.

haru had visited the united states from time to time, and graduated from columbia with a degree in bioengineering and molecular biology. he’d also gone on to do his masters as well. at the age of 23, his father had been brutally slain in their home. before that, another two family members died with similar circumstances, and ever since then haru has intended on investigating their deaths and avenging his father. later his uncle had died as well from the same circumstances in america. this brings him back to new york on a visa in hopes to stop whoever is after the maruyama name.

  Backstory: Willow grew up in the Irish countryside with her mother and several beloved goats. Her mother is a very spiritual, witchy kind of person and a bit of a hippie, so she grew up with a lot of ghost stories and other legends drilled into her head. They’ve always been very quiet and isolated, not having many friends for their formative years, and their distant behavior is considered by those in their small town (village?) to be abnormal. Some people even thought that they were up to no good, sneaking around and disappearing into the forest. Some even called them a fae child. It took Willow a while to realize that their powers weren’t universal, but they’ve always known that something set them apart.

Knowing she didn’t have a future in her hometown, she left when she was 18, looking for work as a groundskeeper or gardener. She was able to pick up a few contract jobs, but nothing permanent, and it was starting to look like she’d had to return home. But one muggy summer evening, as she was pulling weeds in some bushes behind an old woman’s home, she heard two robbers passing by, oblivious to her presence. She used her abilities to silently sneak around them and trick them into hearing someone calling the police nearby, which scared them off. It wasn’t long after that incident that she realized the true potential of her powers and formulated a new identity for herself: Whisper, a cloaked vigilante who wears the skull of a deer. Presently, she’s looking for a hero mentor/employer who could use her help and compensate her enough to survive on her own, and she wouldn’t mind stopping a few bullies while she’s at it.

- demian ended up in the foster system when he was 6. he was given over to a family in lisse with a 12-year-old daughter named nel. they were vaguely aware of demian’s bizarre powers. as such, the vermeyens were patient with demian, and their kindness was rewarded with a streak of incredible good luck. demian’s foster father became wealthy due to a business venture that unexpectedly paid off. they buy a lavish house in amsterdam and demian’s mother gives birth to his and nel’s younger sister, maya.

- demian is formally adopted by the vermeyens at age 11. they struggle in high school. at 15, demian kills the classmate who damaged his eye through an unprecedented bad luck manifestation. this is the first time demian exhibits any degree of control over their luck. demian keeps quiet and the murder is deemed an unfortunate accident, but it affects them deeply. 

- not long later, nel goes missing. demian, believing their bad luck is causing people around them to suffer, leaves home at age 17. they end up living in england with a few friends. initially, they lived in fear of their misfortune hurting others, but as they grew up, they experimented more with what they were capable of when they harnessed even slight control over their luck.

bio/backstory:

ylja was born in iceland to a large family with predominantly powered children.

at a young age, its earliest power, wall climbing, developed. this and the clefting of one of her pupils caused her parents to avoid and unfairly discipline her, believing her to be possessed.

to escape her vitriolic home environment, ylja joined a travelling circus for room and board. she excelled there with the help of her power. she and her crew traveled northern europe for a few years.

during this time, she became an iconic in-show duo with another performer. they had a rushed wedding, then a baby boy, leaving ylja incapable of performing during her pregnancy and out of a job. her and her ex-husband’s relationship ended as quickly as it started. she moved to america with her baby.

like cris, she volunteered to be involved in a scientific program as a voluntary test subject for cash to support her as she got her groundings in america. this encouraged her mutation to accelerate, giving her an extra eye, sharp teeth, and venom. she’s one of the survivors of the labs discovered back in 2016.

now she lives in a dingy apartment with a gaggle of misfit mutants and her kid, all doing their best. making ends meet. it’s found family: metahuman edition. being in a supportive environment and raising a powered child has made her increasingly inclined to take up hero-ing. she has no plans to take up a big, showy persona, but she’s getting a reputation for nighttime heroism nonetheless.

she went to a ‘rich kid’ private school and was generally a smart, quiet kid who avoided harassment and generally used writing as her creative outlet, only showing her friend ha-jun her poems and he encouraged her to do slam poetry and she fell in love with it, she loved being able to use her voice and say what’s on her mind. 

although slam poetry was nnneka’s safe space, it was also the place she discovered her powers when a fellow poet got too handsy with her and needed to see nneka generate hard light spikes to leave her alone.

at eighteen she and ha-jun were “discovered” and due to them having an underground performance and she was offered a record deal.

originally nneka intended to keep this a secret from her parents but they found out and they had a huge argument but it ended up with them deciding that if nneka went to columbia and graduated they would not complain about her career choice.

now nneka recently graduated from columbia and is a poet and a rapper and is enjoying herself though she is estranged from her parents/

Cyrus is the son of the New York County District Attorney, Philip Altucher. He grew up attending expensive, private schools, and attended the Phillips Exeter Academy for high school. He graduated from Columbia University with honors and now attends Columbia Law. As an only child, he grew into the shoes that his parents set out for him: growing precisely into the perfect child that they desired - one who obtained the top marks in his class, spread thin across extracurriculars (debate, model U.N., student government) and sports (soccer, swimming).

His father is a high brow prosecutor with ties to the Harlem Mafia and Avalon Pharmaceuticals; his involvement has matured over time from a semi-active participant-slash-accomplice, to an elected official who turns a blind eye to the undercurrent of organized crime in the city. His father is also the shroud that covers his mother, who is a metahuman, and passed her gift onto Cyrus. Under the guise of early homeschooling, she taught Cyrus how to control his powers and kept him from entering elementary school until he was able to do so easily and consistently.

When Cyrus came of age, his father introduced him to the connections their family had made, and encouraged Cyrus to follow in his footsteps. Cyrus, ever the perfect child, did exactly that, and is now a 2L at Columbia Law focusing on criminal law and procedure. JULIAN MENDES

Julian grew up in a fairly normal family, without any sort of influence or awareness of the realm of metahumans, powered individuals, those with abilities, etc. He was raised primarily by his mother and his stepfather, who has been in his life since he was very young. His biological father was, for the most part, out of the picture. But! for the most part, it was happy family life for Julian in his childhood, with both his parents, his older sister, his stepsister, and later his little brother. He grew up in Bushwick, a neighborhood in Brooklyn, NY, and still lives there to this day.

When he was in high school, his biological father came back into Julian’s life. He started splitting weekends between his parents and his father, but ultimately it was a pretty bad situation for him. The instability of his father, who acted more like an older brother than a parent, took a toll on Julian’s emotional and mental health. His inconsistent parenting and quick temper led to a number of arguments that on more than one occasion escalated into physical fights. Julian doesn’t really share that part of his life, and hasn’t even told his parents about it, either. He did ultimately cut his father out of his life after another falling out when Julian was 19, and they haven’t talked very much since.

In that same year, Julian got sick. He was born with a heart defect that was not detected when he was growing up, but was discovered when it started causing problems for Julian’s health. The defect was repaired but the detrimental effects of its presence were not - he still dealt with a load of health problems, including problems with his heart, and renal insufficiency that required him to be on dialysis treatment.

Fast forward to summer 2018, Julian’s health took a steep downward spiral. He was unable to keep his job, had to take a leave of absence from school, and was essentially limited to his apartment and doctor’s appointments for months. In July, he was hospitalized after a series of unexplained fevers, that worsened his already fragile condition. During the 2 and a half weeks he was hospitalized - Julian died. Died.

He was brought back “by miracle” - the doctors were about to call his time of death when his heart started beating again. They still don’t know how it happened. The truth is, Julian’s powers (dormant until this point, or having developed in just that moment) brought him back. He has only just found out about them, having accidentally cut his hand and witnessed the gash heal itself over, as if by magic.

Since that hospitalization, and the realization of his self-healing powers, Julian has begun to connect the dots together. His health is improving because of the powers, somehow, but he doesn’t know where they came from or why he has them. At this point, he also does not know that he can heal another person, or that he can manipulate light.

superstrength/thick skin: his skin feels the same as a normal persons skin would but the bonds between the atoms making them up are tighter/therefore stronger. this doesnt mean hes impermeable to anything just his own powers! the super strength isnt anything big but hes just stronger than the average person. 

SIDENOTE: when eli uses his powers its an adrenaline rush, sometimes his mania doesnt help either. if he uses a lot of his powers his morphology changes a bit (smoke emits from the mouth and his eye color changes)

- born in clermont ferrard, france. hes a twin (which he is no longer in contact with.) basically their parents did die due to unfortunate reasons. their family was pretty well off tho when eli was very small (which he doesnt remember that well). they ended up in a school in the US.

- elis powers first showed up at the age of 9? he was pretty stressed about it as a kid. it was accidental and luckily no one was there. his sister also had powers. 

- eli used to hang around the wrong crowds. he basically decided to all up and drop out (or disappear). eli joined a group of friends and later got sucked into an organized anarchist “powered” gang by respective kid friend: ruben khan. 

-eli participated in armed robbery, transport of drugs, weapons, etc. black market stuff as years went by. he was usually the one doing it not organizing. lots of things happened but eventually eli left after being arrested for like the 3rd time on a “plea” deal thanks to a detective officer crowley who is currently his probation officer. he also really did want out. eli did also develope a coke addiction during his time with the gang to which he went to rehab for.

Powers: Type III Regenerative Healing Factor, which allow for minor wounds to heal almost instantaneously and more severe wounds to heal over time; formerly, regenerated cells would be identical to his own, and minimal scarring would occur. However, now when severe wounds heal, discoloration will occur and the DNA of the new cells will match that of his blood. 

Mutagenic Blood, which upon sustained contact (exceeding 10 minutes) or repeated contact (over 20 times in the same general area) will cause any organic material to undergo genetic disintegration and reassembly, where the DNA of the affected areas of the organism will be identical to the blood’s, despite maintaining the organism’s initial appearance. If desired, however, the affected organic material can be induced to rupture and bleed profusely, thereby spreading the mutagenic DNA further, thereby being a limited form of Wound Inducement. His blood does not have the same DNA as the rest of his body, and this DNA allows for Pain Suppression and effectively causes Contaminant Immunity for all forms of bacterial infections and organic-based poisons.

Backstory: Winslow grew up as the only child of an extremely wealthy family in the stiflingly luxurious suburbs around Silicon Valley. His father is a abstract painter, and his mother is the co-founder of a massive tech company. They struggled to be good parents, and often tended to overdo their efforts for their son’s affection, spoiling him with anything he could ever want. Much to their dismay, Winslow had little interest in the business of tech nor the abstractions of modern art, and instead, since childhood, cultivated a deep and unsettling interest in the biology of death. 

When the question of college came around, Winslow attended Harvard University, desperate to get out of the West Coast where he lived his entire life. He double majored in Art History and Biology. His regenerative healing powers manifested during his time at Harvard as a result of the severe stress he was under, but Winslow was fortunate enough to have never been severely injured for the power to be fully discovered.

After completing his undergraduate education, he applied and was admitted to Columbia University’s MD-PhD program three years ago. He landed a research internship on cell regeneration at Avalon Pharmaceuticals, where he caught the attention of Dr. Ezekiel Daubney after a freak accident in the research lab somehow didn’t harm him, let alone kill him. Convinced into volunteering for deeper research into the healing factor he possessed, Winslow found himself gradually roped into the darker spheres of Avalon Pharmaceuticals, becoming a research subject rather than what he had originally signed up for. Officially counted to have dropped out of his MD-PhD program, Winslow gradually withdrew from his previous life.

His mutagenic blood is a result of Daubney’s experiments and is regarded as Daubney’s magnum opus. Since Halloween 2016, Winslow has been accompanying Daubney in his evasion of authorities to continue experimenting with the potential of his newfound ability. He is currently considered missing. 

Some fun facts:

Winslow only applied to one college, that being Harvard. He really stressed out his college counselors. He skipped second grade.

He is prone to taking things apart absentmindedly and fidgeting with objects just to occupy his hands.

Winslow used to have a formidable collection of bowties. He is currently cultivating a new one.

Winslow hates abstract and modern art, preferring the intensified realism of the Renaissance artists.

air manipulation: this is alina’s main power, she can do all the things that you basically imagine such as throwing gusts of wind and being able to float. but over time her control over air has gotten specialized to the point where she can manipulate the wavelengths in the air such as light. doing things such as causing flashes and ‘light shows’ or making herself disappear for a bit of time. she’s not generating light where it doesn’t exist nor can she, she’s manipulating what’s already there.

born in paris, france to a former american war hero, current military and law-enforcement trainer and your typical “kooky” liberal college professor. her parents marriage was already broken when she was born. her mom constantly left her father was distant emotionally. when she was a kid she’d injure herself purposefully so her dad would care for her and during one attempt gone wrong she activated her powers and felt isolated from everyone.

when she was fifteen her mother left and her dad moved back to america leaving alina with her grandma. a year later she met a guy at a record shop and they started dating and got seriously quickly despite her grandmother’s disapproval. she moved in with him after arguing with her grandparents.

they bonded over having powers and generally feeling lost and they started with petty crimes like vandalism until it evolved into robbery and terrorism. 

when she was eighteen her boyfriend and her had a violent falling out which resulted in her deciding that she had enough and left to new york city to focus on actually legal career and trying to redeem herself.

she’s now considered a pop-star she’s not a global phenomenon or anything like that but she is liked and prominent enough to live a comfortable life.
