THE MOMENT WHEN;
Itās Michael who shows up at her door as she is packing her suitcase. Itās not supposed to be a long trip. Itās just for a week or so. They arenāt going far either. Itās just back to her old hometown. She wants to show Morgan around. She wants to take him to all the places that she loved. She wants to be there with the person that she loves. Not that sheās vocalized her feelings because that would be terrifying. Ā
Itās Michael who asks if he can come inside and she lets him in without hesitance. Heās the one person who has always been kind to her since the day that she met him. Heās never treated her badly because of her father. Heās always been kind. The expression on his features causes confusion to play on her own. Itās hard to describe what she sees. But, it something between agony and a simmering rage, and itās not at all Michael. Ā His eyes are red, puffy, and his hands are shaking in a way that sheās only seen a few times in her life. Itās nothing that sheās seen on him. But, she has seen this before, and it dawns on her.
Someone is dead. Ā A chill rolls through her as the first thought is of her father. Had he finally gone too far and landed himself inside a shallow grave, somewhere? Her hands go to her mouth as she realizes that Michael wouldnāt be there for that. One of her brothers would have shown up, Dante, Olivia or any other number of people. But, it wouldnāt be on Michael to tell her, and itās then that she realizes it has to be someone else . His shaking hands are already reaching for her as her hands drop to her side. She can feel them settle on her shoulders as his eyes meet hers.Ā
āEllie.ā
Tears well in her eyes at the nickname that he had given her so long ago.Ā āJust tell me, Michael.ā And she wants him to tell her because the waiting, the ideas that are forming in her head are too much, and she cannot handle it much longer.
āItās Morgan. Heās dead, Ellie--ā
The words are barely out of his mouth when she jolts away from him in a reckless manner.Ā āNo, heās not dead, Michael. Heās not!ā Sheās insistent about it. Thereās no way that he could possibly be dead. He couldnāt be gone. He had just been there a few hours ago.Ā
Her eyes are burning and it feels as though the room is spinning. He starts to explain what had happened. Sheās not even listening anymore. Itās not until his fatherās name comes up that sheās suddenly out of the fog surrounding her. She can finally focus enough to hear him. Itās Sonnyās fault. They think it is, anyway. The bomb had been on Julianās car. Itād killed Morgan. Sonny had killed Morgan.
Her knees feel weak as she realizes that she will never get to say the things that she had wanted to say to him. The words would remain unspoken, locked away in a part of her heart for no one to hear, and heād never know how much sheād cared. Sheās not sure when she began to scream, or when her knees gave out, or when she landed on the ground.
All she knows is that sheās there and she feels like she cannot breathe. Thereās a hole inside that isnāt going to be able to be filled. Even Michael joining her on the ground with his arms around her, her head pressed into his shirt, and him whispering soothing words is doing nothing to help.
āI didnāt tell him. I never told him.ā
