Overall, this image is literally very dark which helps to convey an eerie feeling/mood. The use of shadows on the cloaked figure embracing the child enhances the disturbing reality of this photograph.

From “Man on Earth” by Rupert Vandervell
Vandervell uses light and shadow in this photo to creat some stark, contrasting imagery. This harsh contrast creates a very empty/lonely scene making it seem like the man in the picture is the last man on earth.

“Naptime” Sally Mann 1989
In this photograph by Sally Mann, she uses lights and shadows to make it seem as if the young girl in the picture is deceased. The harsh light on the girl’s face casts dark shadows under her eyes and the messy hair, dark lips, and vacant facial expression help to convey this.

Philippe Halsman, “Dali-1946″ and “Clint Eastwood” -- I like the abstract/dynamic feeling to Halsman’s work. These two photographs in particular utilize multiple exposures to create a more dynamic image. Most of Halsman’s work tends to have a very light-hearted/abstract mood to them.
Richard Avedon, “ Carmen (Homage to Munkacsi) Coat by Cardin" -- This photograph was one of Avedon’s fashion photo shoots and was likely a commission piece to promote or sell a product, in this case the “coat by Cardin”. Avedon’s work is unique in the way that he captures his subjects. Most of the time they are not just standing/sitting in front of the camera and looking straight at it but rather they are in motion. This allows the photograph to convey a feeling of happiness and being free. I feel like this image in particular would make the consumer feel as if wearing this coat would make them feel “lighter than air” or free to be.
Dorothea Lange, “Grandfather and Grandson” -- In the 1940s the U.S. government commissioned Dorothea Lange to document the “evacuation” and “relocation” of Japanese Americans. Lange did not agree with the “relocation” of the Japanese Americans and her work clearly conveys her contrary point of view. Because of that her work was seized/impounded for the duration of World War II and remained largely unseen until 2006. This photograph of a grandfather and his grandson at the Manzanar Relocation Center conveys the hurt and betrayal that the Japanese Americans may have felt during the relocation. Overall, this photograph has a very somber and melancholy vibe to it.

“By three methods we may learn wisdom: First, by reflection, which is noblest; second is by imitation, which is easiest; third is by experience, which is the bitterest.” -Confucius
Original Photograph (Left): “Hittin’ the Bricks” by Scott Cahill Rude, Reflecting on Seattle-Urban Photography
I chose to imitate the style of Scott Cahill Rude with this picture because his style and work inspires me. I met him a few years ago in Seattle and he told me that the basis of his work was taking something negative like the rain/depressing weather of Seattle and turning it into beautiful works of art.

Original Photograph (left) of Ansel Adams taken by J. Malcom Greany
I chose to imitate this photograph of Ansel Adams because he is one of the photographic artists that inspire me as a photographer. I try to emulate his style by using similar equipment and visiting locations that he often shot. One day, I hope to recreate some of his photographs with my own unique twist!

Original photograph (left) taken by Andy Warhol as part of one of his Polaroid series
I chose to imitate this polaroid of Andy Warhol because his work, especially that with instant photography inspires me to become a better instant photographer. I love the way in which his photographs capture his style and specifically with this series how they captured the personality of his models and how he perceived them. Andy Warhol often used a Polaroid SX-70 and the Polaroid Big Shot. I happen to have both of those cameras and like to shoot with them while attempting to emulate his style. :)

George Krause Photographs “The Street”
I like the high contrast between light and dark in these photographs by George Krause. The balance between the lights and shadows give the pictures an almost 3D effect and enhance the textures of the subjects!

I feel as if Dorothea Lange's photographs are the epitome of the phrase "a picture is worth a thousand words". Dorothea Lange's photographs are very powerful and are more than just pictures. One of my favorite pictures of hers is the one of the Japanese-American children pledging allegiance to the American Flag. This photograph was taken as part of her documentation of the Japanese internment camps and to me it conveys how she was against what the American government was doing and how these people were truly American citizens and not the enemy.

I like the way that Man Ray adds depth to his photograms creating the illusion that the objects are coming out of the photo!
