The Purpose of Firespitting
So! I had a thought as to why Ta matoran spit sparks. Its a way of maintaining thermostasis (constant body temperature)
Even Ta matoran get overheated, but unlike other matoran, generally, they’re in an environment that doesn’t allow them to passively vent the heat away, the air around them is hotter than they are. So instead, extra heat in the body is converted to elemental energy, which they can then expel as sparks.
Some Ta matoran are more prone than others to get sparky, and there are more reasons than just overheating. Some spark when excited or under emtional duress, and some spark excessively when sick. However, non thermostasis sparking still causes a Ta matoran to loose body heat, so it is possible for a Ta matoran to chill himself, possibly even dangerously so, if he keeps producing sparks in a cold environment.

Oh yeah, you might say they're the foundation!
What do you call it when a Toa statue falls over and the head and shoulders break off? The statue was busted!
Heh, I see you’re as on topple your game as ever!

Poha, the Turaga of Stone, is the leader of a clan of matoran who dwell in the arid region of Po Akota. To chief these Po-Akotans, known as the Transients, one must possess a gentle heart and a mighty resolve, for there is little comfort to be found in the scorching heat and abrasive storms of the Karzahni Desert. Nevertheless, the Transients manage to thrive in these conditions under the guidance of Poha.
The Transients make their living scavenging ancient relics from ruins uncovered by the violent desert winds during the cooler seasons. When summer arrives, and the heat of the desert becomes intolerable, the Transients gather their harvest and set out across Akota Nui in search of trade. While they often find substantial business in the other regions, the Transients save their greatest finds for the scholars of Ko Akota’s Grand Archives. These scholars, who dedicate their lives to uncovering the history of the Ancients and their otherworldly visitors, tend to pay handsomely for artifacts which may assist in their research.
It was during one such journey when Poha first encountered Hipono. When traveling south of the Temple of N’un, the Transients discovered Hipono wandering within a nearby forest. Poha approached the confused Hipono and discovered he had recently made his exodus from the N’un. Poha proceeded to take Hipono under his wing, and the two of them, along with the rest of the Transients, traveled to the Grand Archives together. It did not take long to solidify their friendship, and Hipono proceeded to live with the Transients.
Over the years, Hipono developed an incredible fascination with Akota Nui’s past- particularly the Outsiders. He would even stay at the Grand Archives for prolonged periods of time to conduct research with Grand Scholar Kotapa. During one of their excavations in Ko Akota, Hipono came into contact with a strange relic. It was then he had his first vision, one of a being he would soon call ‘Mother.’ It was at this point he utilized the reputation he had gained traveling with the Transients to establish the Church of Cradle. Poha was somewhat wary of this, for his kind possessed little faith, but he valued Hipono’s judgement. Nevertheless, Poha witnessed a concerning change in Hipono, one which would inevitably shake the foundation of their relationship and that of the other turaga.
Bonus: Climbing Claws
Gauntlets which predate even the Ancients. It is said these claws were once wielded by a hero of legend, one who possessed a complete mastery of stone.

Dark Mirror: everyone’s worst nightmare. The Toa as dictators, violent oppressors, terrifying and strict and the source of the universe’s brokenness…
Or was it? Mata Nui still lived, awake and continuing on his way. Tuyet’s take over ensured this, ensured that things would continue as they had within the Matoran Universe. She prevented Teridax take over from Miserex, she crushed the Matoran Civil War before it could begin, she kept the universe as it should be. She didn’t just seek to awaken Mata Nui: she kept him going.
The Toa Mata, the backup reboot. They never would have awoken, in this land, but that she manually triggered their awakening. How different that must have been, awakening in a city, greeted by fellow Toa, inducted into an order and purpose by one’s fellows instead of awed Matoran and cryptic Turaga. Definite missions to protect and defend, go here, defeat this, maintain order in this sector, here’s your team they’ll explain what you need, not Kanohi hide and seek across the wilds of the island, with vague directions and vaguer warnings.
They have no memory of another life, another way to be, so this is what being a Toa is, isn’t it? Some of them, like Tahu… He feels steady, powerful. He’s respected and feared, and the flush of heady power does well to quench the discomfort deep inside. Gali works hard to protect the Matoran as best she can—by teaching them how to act, protecting them from themselves. Kopaka thrives under the protocol and order; he knows each and every duty he must undertake, no riddles or puzzles or room for uncertainty. Lewa doesn’t even think to question it, either, not in this environment. Onua… chooses not to question, he questions deep inside. Any of them who do wonder or worry see each others’ certainty, or the certainty of the other Toa around them (why would they even be kept together, after all? They have no solid memory of each other, and any that came back wouldn’t be helpful keeping them in line), and that certainty convinces them it’s their own problem, their own moral crisis.
And Pohatu? Personable, practical, kindly, thoughtful Pohatu… he’s the one who sees this all and says ‘no’. Not at first, no, not for a long time… and in little ways, when he starts. Refusal to use lethal force. Disapproving of harsh punishment. Getting to know a Matoran. He’d slip up a lot, be too friendly, too kind—he’d have an edge to him in this world, a knowledge of what can be done. But with the connections to the resistance movement, that would give him the confidence, the structure to really fight back.
And with no real connection to his team, aside from maybe knowing he woke up with them… he wouldn’t think of them as anything but more corrupt Toa, too harsh and loyal toward Tuyet.

Have you ever explored the limits of your powers? You always seem to produce very similar kinds of stone, but presumably you should be able to create most any kind of mineral. Have you ever created geodes with surprise interiors? (Those would make amazing gifts!) Perhaps you could work on diamond-based attacks against your foes.
You know, I’ve never really thought about geodes... that’s a good idea!
