There was no release date requirement, it could be from any year.

PhD Year 1/ Semester 1 (2023)
As always, I choose a release and listen to it all [week?] long and choose my favorite song and add it to this compilation. At the end of the semester[s?] it makes a nice little time capsule playlist. I listen to the weekly release mostly at home now because I am never at the university. There is no office for doctoral students or space where we can go and the library is not amazing, so I just stay home and work on my research. We do have a place called La maison de la recherche, but it's in a completely different arrondissement across town (the Latin Quarter) and the work space there for doctoral students is weird... I dunno. Anyway.
1. "Ovule" by Björk from fossora (2022)
2. "I Inside the Old Year Dying" by PJ Harvey from I Inside the Old Year Dying (2023)
3. "Exploitation (Edit)" by Róisín Murphy from Exploitation (2015)*
4. "+💡÷" by Tori Amos from Ocean to Ocean (2021)
5. "So What" by Miles Davis from Kind of Blue (1959)
6. "Surrender (Petalpusher Original)" by Petalpusher from Surrender (2000)**
7. "the slab" by Slowdive from Everything Is Alive (2023)
8. "How Long Has This Been Going On? (MJ Cole Remix)" by Carmen McRae from Verve Remixed (2005)
9. "Long Light" by Lusine featuring Benoît Pioulard from Long Light (2023)
10. "G1 - Post Awareness Confusions" by The Caretaker from Everywhere at the End of Time - Stage 4 (2018)
11. "Not for Me" by Blonde Redhead from Sit down for Dinner (2023)
12. "Mind" by Talking Heads from Fear of Music (1979)
13. "Weedless Hook" by Blank Gloss from Pop Ambient 2024 (2023)
14. "Good King Wenceslas" by Tori Amos from Midwinter Graces (2009)
15. "Where Youth and Laughter Go" by Broadcast from Extended Play (2000)***
*I wanted to learn about Róisín Murphy, so I made a playlist of her singles to kind of get a sense of her sound.
**This is from a playlist of singles from the Naked Music record label
***This is from The Future Crayon, their compilation of non-album tracks post-The Noise Made by People

M2 Defense/ PhD Audition (2023)
As always, I choose a release and listen to it all [week?] long and choose my favorite song and add it to this compilation. At the end of the semester[s?] it makes a nice little time capsule playlist. I listen to the weekly release mostly at home now that I do not have any more coursework. During this time I was preparing for my defense, which I did successfully with a mention of "très bien" and for my audition for the doctoral school at the Sorbonne Nouvelle (Paris III). I was not selected to get a fully funded contract and when they reconsidered the disbursement of contracts, I again was not selected. However, someone from another program within the university declined their contract, so they finally offered me the contract LOL. To get to Université Paris Cité (Paris VII/ Paris V), I take 9 to the Pont de l’alma and cross it to go down into RER C. To get to Paris III at Nation, I take 6 to Étoile and then RER A. To get to Paris III's Maison de la recherche, I take 6 to La motte picquet/ Grenelle and change to 10, getting off at Cardinal Lemoine.
"Arisen My Senses" by Björk from Utopia (2017)
2. "Sweeter Love (Naked & Moody Dub)" by Blue Six from Sweeter Love (1998)
3. "You Have Placed a Chill in My Heart" by Eurythmics from Savage (1987)
4. "Haze" by Lusine from Push (2003)
5. "Tourniquet" by Rasputina from The Lost & Found (2001)
6. "Brandenburg Concerto No. 3 in G Major: First Movement" by Wendy Carlos from Switched-On Bach (1968)
7. "Alright" by Janet Jackson from Janet Jackson's Rhythm Nation 1814 (1989)
8. "You've Changed" by Billie Holiday from Lady in Satin (1958)
9. "American Daughter" by Beach House from Become (2023)
10. "F2 - Drifting Time Misplaced" by The Caretaker from Everywhere at the End of Time - Stage 3 (2017)

12", 33 1/3, black
Kompakt KOM 411 LC 12012
Etch KOM 411 A³ SST Z (Side 1) KOM 411 B² SST Z (Side B)
The first compilation in Kompakt's outstanding Pop Ambient series and my personal favorite. The series goes on to explore many different facets of ambient music (while keeping the focus on pop music hooks and accessibility), but here it's a very, very techno sound. It's notable here that the track named "Because" on the sleeve is from Ulf Lohmann's EP Because, and each track on it is untitled. The one on this compilation is the same as the first track of side 2 from his EP. This release is a reissue since its first edition was only released on CD (in the year 2000, I don't think vinyl had really come back yet like it has in the last 15 years or so). Sadly, this is not the red transparent vinyl version, it's the standard black vinyl edition. As it's a modern reissue, it came with a download card to get all the tracks. Interestingly, the track that you download labeled "Because" is not side 2 track 1 of the Because EP, but it's actually track 2 from side 1 (it doesn't match the track that you hear when you play the actual record). I bought this one for myself as something special to celebrate finishing my vicious master degree program with the mention "très bien."

Fun single from Air's exquisite debut album. I always liked the song; I think it was the first song I ever heard by them. The alternate version on the b-side is fun, plus the transparent yellow vinyl is cool. I think my husband bought me this one too. Maybe he bought it for me because of the cover which features the adorable stuffed monkey from the music video who terrorizes NYC and then takes off into outer space (?) to go live on the moon 😂

Island Records Ltd. IS 730 572 504-7 LC 0407

Etch IS 730 A-1 LOUD IS 730 B1
This is a single from my favorite PJ Harvey album "Is This Desire?" that my husband bought me as a gift for finishing my master's degree and defending my thesis with a mention of "très bien." I wanted this and "A Perfect Day Elise" because the b-sides are all part of the album (in my mind), and I love them as much as I love the album tracks. It appears to be previously owned, but the condition is near mint, so it was a wonderful gift.

Another record from the Alice Thiel lot that's seen better days, but at least it plays and sounds OK. I saw on Discogs that some editions had a sleeve. Either this one did not or it was lost over time. None of the records in the Alice Thiel lot had sleeves, so I doubt it.

Bonnie & Lee - I Need Ya (Gotta Have You for My Own)

Bonnie & Lee was a project produced by Guy Draper, a member of the Mayfield Singers with Donny Hathaway and Leroy Hutson. I've been unable to identify who exactly Bonnie and Lee were. There seem to be several editions of this single, all with different labels. This one is the label with the blue stripes. According to Discogs, this and one other single were the only records issued by Bonnie & Lee. It's sad, because "I Need Ya (Gotta Have You for My Own)" is actually my favorite song from the lot from where this record comes (Alice Thiel's). There is something stamped into the etch that I can't read, but it ends with the word "Wayne." This record is from Alice Thiel's record collection. My friend Amy Cordara had acquired a blue carrying case for 7" records, filled with them, many of which have "Alice Thiel" written on them. Perhaps it is part of Alice's record collection. I Googled the name in the area where we were living and looked for someone old enough to have owned a record in 1967 (when this single was issued, according to Discogs, although it isn't indicated anywhere on the label). I found only one woman who fits the description, who had died in 2018. Assuming the owner of these records never changed her name from marriage and never left the area, I will keep the romantic idea that this collection belonged to the woman in the obituary.
Tumblr media
There are many others in this collection that I will eventually upload here. Don't worry, Alice, I'm taking care of them. I listen to them and always think about you when I listen to them.

Hugues Aufray - Chante Dylan
Face 1 Le jour où le bateau viendra Les temps changent

Etch HBLY 70939 A 1.5 (face 1) HBLY 70939 B 1.5 (face 2)
An EP of Hugues Aufray covering Bob Dylan songs probably from 1966, but it doesn't say anywhere on the label and the sleeve is missing. Other editions of this EP were released in 1966 according to Discogs and his LP containing all of these tracks was released in 1965, so it is probably safe to say this is from 1966. This is from the 7" records Etienne grabbed from his mom's house. It plays fine; it doesn't skip or anything, but the sound quality is what you might expect from a 7" that was actively played that was opened about 60 years ago. It appears to be a version of the single release of "Le jour où le bateau viendra" backed with "Dieu est à nos côtés" to which they added the additional two tracks to make an EP.
