Cannot believe we made it. This car is amazingly original, even down to the vinyl and switches (dad refurbed these). The only components that we replaced - tires, rear brake cylinders, brake master, exhaust, top, radiator (by choice), trunk kit, beauty rings.
Dad and I raced around the empty streets this early Saturday morning. The Healey is a lot faster than the TR, so we are going to do something about that...time to take her apart again hahahaha.
First real drive with a street legal 1972 TR6! I have learned a lot and I can now drive a stick pretty well! BTW chrome was twice what we thought...budget is now $10000 hahahaha.
The car looks a lot better than we had ever anticipated so its been worth it. Budget breakers were redlines, chrome, exterior paint and new exhaust.
Honestly this is a super great looking car. Cannot believe we are done, but still have the top to install.
One year later! First year at Tech, we were hoping to have this done by the time I started school so that put a kink in the plan, but Dad got the interior and some small items done while I was at school. We are almost there and about $9000 into it! Got the paint done, not too bad a little overspray, but a good bargain.
On to the interior. The car is gong to need paint ($1600). We were going to try to stay with original paint, but it was just too faded out. Also, decided to fit with Redline reproduction tires--an extra $500. There’s an extra $2100 we didn’t count on. Budget has been increased to $9500...hahahahaha.
On to the interior which Dad said would be a lot of $$$$.
Time to talk about wiring etc. We decided, since we are on a budget, to use existing wiring harness, switches etc. (to the extent possible). The only parts we have replaced so far are bushings, u-joints, brake booster, pads and rear brake pistons.
Trying to keep this project in around $7500, so may be stupid to refurbish old parts, but...its an experiment.
Also, we found out that since this is an early ‘72 it has a lot of ‘71 configurations. Some of the wiring and the cooling system for instance.
We have completed the undercarriage, suspension and engine bay. We are now moving on to the drive train. This car has 41K miles on it, so we are not going to do anything with the transmission except paint it. Motor will require a complete go through.
It seems like freeze plugs were replaced and we can’t understand why, with so few miles, they had the engine apart, timing chain off, new timing gears and the freeze plugs were blown out. Could be a problem??
School and baseball have been busy and we are getting back to it over Holiday breaks...suspension is done, undercarriage cleaned and painted. Time to pull the power train and seeing what kind of mess we have...one thing weird is the freeze plugs had been replace with cheap temp jobs...hope this block isn’t cracked.
The suspension has taken all summer. We cleaned the wheel wells and frame (no powder coat we are on a budget), turned original discs, drums and rebuilt calipers. Extremely tough work and messing with springs is dangerous if you don’t know what you are doing...we didn’t.
