Fata Morgana
A superior mirage caused by warm air resting on patches of colder air in an atmospheric duct that acts like a refracting lens. Objects on the horizon could appear to be mirrored, distorted, or float. This form of mirage could be the reason for the Flying Dutchman Legend.

Special sails
We are more familiar with ships that go up to the topgallant sail (t'gallant or t'garns'l), but there are still some special sails that are above it, these are the Royal, the Skysail and above that the Moonraker. Because of the height they reached, these ships were also called skyscrapers, but please do not confuse them with the skyscraper sail, which was hoisted above them in a triangular shape on much larger ships like clipper or steal barques during the 19th and early 20th century.

Royal
A royal is a small sail flown immediately above the topgallant on square rigged sailing ships. It was originally called the "topgallant royal" and was used in light and favourable winds. Royal sails were normally found only on larger ships with masts tall enough to accommodate the extra canvas. Royals were introduced around the turn of the 18th century but were not usually flown on the mizzenmast until the end of that century. It gave its name to a Dutch term for a light breeze-the Royal Sail Breeze or bovenbramzeilskoelte was a Force 2 wind on the Beaufort Scale.
Skysail
In the course of the 18th century (although the first written records do not exist until 1807), skysails began to be hoisted over the Royal, again in good weather and light winds.
Moonraker
The word itself dates back to the 18th century and was the name for a sail that was hoisted directly above the sky sail, and it was only hoisted when there was very little wind, because if the wind was too strong, it would simply tear off.

Watersail
A watersail is a sail hung below the boom. It is used mostly on gaff rig boats for extra downwind performance when racing. Often a watersail will be improvised from an unused foresail. Its psychological effects may be more effective than its aerodynamic ones. Surprisingly, its use can be traced back to as early as 1373. Possibly even earlier, since the 12th century.

writing historical fiction will make you google things like “when we’re towels invented?” “how much did a towel cost in American in 1885?” “historical average number of towels owned per household”

So I had a fun fictional death's door experience today .
I made a voyage to Kingeater's Castle to complete the Sigil-Ridden Navigator's questline and I thought, maybe I should go to Varchas, it's close by and it's still darkened on the map, so to Varchas I sail. My Terror was starting to become worrying but nothing I couldn't handle just yet. So I arrive, enter the city and start going through the options... and somehow all the options I choose raise my Terror.
By the time I'm done, my Terror is at 96.
First thing I do is, obviously, stare at the screen in horror. All the hard work I did, wiped out in some clicks. I didn't even leave a Scion back in London, so one less Legacy in my Ironclad Will. I already have enough money to buy the damn Zeeside Mansion and complete my Ambition, but it doesn't matter because my crew and I are four Terror points away of going mad. Fucking crock of shit, if you ask me.
I leave port because what else is there for me to do, no use in stalling the inevitable. So I start sailing in the direction of Adam's Way, thinking of how stupid I am, and then. I notice.
My Terror is not rising anymore.
It takes me some seconds to fully comprehend this, but it dawns on me: I'm sailing almost hugged to the Continent's shore, with lights on. So my Terror can't rise.
Letting out what probably sounded like a madman's cackle, I pass the following two minutes or so painstakingly glued to the shore as I slowly make my way to Adam's Way, almost sobbing twice when first a flock of Milliner Bats then a Pirate Frigate come way too close to me. But I arrive. Good fucking god, I arrive. I spend all my clicks in shore leave then I sit back, actually lightheaded. I was gonna live to see another voyage. Moral of the story, fuck Varchas i guess

I don’t think adding nonbinary to Victorian’s gender system would’ve fixed their weird sexism. If anything I think it would’ve made them weirder and sexismier
