Peshawar and Peshawari Chappal.
We all think the Name of Peshawari Chappal is comes form city of Peshawar, But we never think from this side, if the Origin of this footwear is Peshawar so why Peshawari do not call it Peshawari Chappal, Why they call it Saplai ? So I found it very Confusing.
I think because this footwear is so ancient so it lost it Origin but making of this footwear had centralized in Peshawar because of easy availability of the cow leather and presence of good artisan. Now the making of this footwear have been decentralized but their are lots of Cobbler still left in Peshawar who involve in the work generation after generation.
Tumblr media
I think despite of finding the origin of Peshawari Chappal we should focus on it increasing demand and popularity out side Pakistan.

The sole can be leather or rubber. Leather soles are generally lighter whereas rubber soles are a bit heavier but longer lasting.
In summer some people prefer to wear an even more front open version called Panjdar Saplai or Panjdaray Saplai /  Chappal.
Tumblr media
Traditionally saplai were made by the local village cobbler or local artisans. The local artisans or cobblers still exist and some people will only wear saplai made by their favorite artisan / cobbler. Others are not so particular and buy them from larger commercial stores in cities.
Tumblr media
Peshawari Chappal can be worn with the native qamees shalwar dress or with pants. Women do not wear such chappals though – it would be un-feminine.
Peshawari Chappal is available in black and brown color, mostly hand stitched though some very limited versions are available in the soft leather hand knotted variety. Some boutiques in cities also have very fancy versions with gold thread, embossing and exotic colors.
