Temporary Teaching Fellow

An opportunity has arisen within the University’s Department of Biology and Biochemistry for a part-time (0.4 FTE) Teaching Fellow in Conservation Biology for up to 24 weeks. The successful applicant would ideally be available for an immediate start in January 2019 for a fixed term period. .

Teaching responsibilities will include the delivery of lectures, seminars, workshops and tutorials together with the development of new teaching materials.

Applicants should hold a first degree and a postgraduate qualification related to Conservation Biology.

You must be a strong team player, able to work on your own initiative within a dynamic environment. A track record in the delivery of a high quality student learning experience is desirable but not essential.

This post is a part time, fixed term position (14.60 hours per week).

Universities launch Good Neighbour Campaign 2018

The University of Bath’s Acting Vice-Chancellor, Professor Bernie Morley and Bath Spa University’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor Sue Rigby, teamed up with Councillor Bob Goodman and students from both universities to take part in the Student Community Partnership’s (SCP) yearly initiative to encourage good relations between students and local residents.

The team of volunteers took part in a day of door knocking to over 1,000 properties in Bath, offering neighbourly advice to all, with the aim of establishing neighbourly relations and to provide information to new residents regarding waste, recycling and bin collection days. Further door knocking days are planned throughout the month of October.

Student residents also received advice on living in the city, including utilising the different public transport services on offer and the variety of opportunities to get involved in the local community, such as volunteering.

The SCP is a collaboration between the Universities of Bath and Bath Spa, their student unions, Bath College and Bath & North East Somerset Council. It exists to promote harmonious relationships between students, residents and the wider community of Bath.

Acting Vice-Chancellor at the University of Bath, Professor Bernie Morley, commented:

We are proud to be part of the Student Community Partnership which helps to facilitate good neighbourly relations. This campaign directly addresses any issues or concerns of students and local residents alike, as well as providing our students with helpful, practical information about how to be a good neighbour.

I am delighted to have been able to join the launch of the campaign today and take time to meet, and listen to, local residents.

Vice-Chancellor at Bath Spa University, Professor Susan Rigby, said:

It’s been wonderful to be out and about in the city, meeting student and local residents alike. It is important that good relations between all residents are established and maintained, and the Good Neighbour Campaign allows concerns to be raised and addressed, as well as providing useful guidance. It’s been very interesting meeting the different members of the community throughout the day and hearing how the SCP can strengthen further the relationship between the universities and the city.

Councillor Bob Goodman added:

I’m really pleased to be taking part in the Good Neighbour Campaign for a second year running.

From what I’ve experienced, the residents of Bath are a lot more understanding and welcoming to students. There is always more work to do, however there is a much greater acceptance now, which is great to see and credit to the work of the SCP.

DIY Calming Vegan Organic Jelly Soaps

This DIY bath Jelly recipe is like a Lush Dupe. This recipe will show you how to make your own bath jelly or jellies. This recipe is for a bath soap that is the texture of jelly. It is NOT edible.

These handmade Jelly soaps are like washing with Jello, they are wiggly and wobbly and the kids will hopefully love to wash with them. Any incentive to get them in the shower right?

As you are working with gelatin which sets quickly, make sure you have everything set up before you start, including your soap molds.

I have also made this jelly soap in a large container and then cut it up and popped it into a jar with a spoon and the kids just spooned it on. 

The base for this soap is liquid soap, If you are planning on adding your own scents like we have done below (chamomile and lavender)then make sure your base soap is unscented.

If your mix is not setting, then re-heat and add more gelatin.

Add chamomile essential oil 8. Add vegan food coloring 9. Give everything a good stir until well combined. 10. Pour mixture into mold and refrigerate for at least two hours 11. Store in an air tight container in the fridge until ready to use. If you don’t keep in the fridge, it will turn mushy!

We celebrate Navy Day each year on October 27, one of the score of dates designated in the U.S. Flag Code to fly Old Glory. Navy Day honors everyone who serves or served in the U.S. Navy.

Navy Day may be eclipsed by Armed Forces Day, Memorial Day and Veterans Day in modern life, but it’s still in the law and the Navy still notes it.

Plus, we celebrate Navy Day on the birthday of former Secretary of the Navy Theodore Roosevelt. It’s Teddy’s birthday today, too.

WALK 'N' SNIFF: Seas the Day Collection

So as you may (or may not) know, the "Seas the Day" Candles randomly popped up online last week. However there have been varying reports of when they were supposed to appear in stores - some stores received theirs over the weekend, some got theirs first thing this morning while others have said that their store wouldn't get them until next week with the new floorset. I went to a BBW this morning and they didn't have any of them; not really surprising cuz that store is whack. Then later, before heading home, I stopped by my local WB store and, lo and behold, they had em.

So you already know what Tiki Beach smells like..and Island Papaya and Aloha Kiwi Passionfruit and Coconut Sandalwood.

The Perfect Summer is Suntan aka Poolside and it smells like legit suntan lotion Berry Waffle Cone is back...why I dunno. It doesn't smell summery at all. Everybody goes apeshit for it and love of me, I don't understand the hype.

And now, on to the newness... Salted Ocean Air (9086AGA2) - this candle has been getting a bit of hype on social media...which is odd for a non-bakery conceptual scent (though having sniffed it finally, I know why). And I must admit that I was quite intrigued with this one at first as I love anything watery/oceanic/salty. After sniffing it, the intrigue disappeared and replaced with confusion; it was not at all what I was expecting.

So right off the bat, the scent is misnamed; it doesn't at all smell anything like "salted ocean air". There's nothing salty or oceanic about this scent though there is an airy/ozonic vibe to it. It's more in the Beach Cabana, Sea Island Cotton, Sundrenched Linen family - think towels and laundry detergent.

Speaking of laundry detergent; there's a one hit wonder candle that this reminds me of - Island Tiare Flower. NOT A REPACKAGE but has a similar beachy laundry detergent/softener vibe.

So what does it smell like? I must admit, it was kinda hard to pick this blend apart because the notes are so friggin vague...and I really wish BBW would stop with the BS and just post honest notes. Anyway, like I said earlier, I do get an airy/ozonic note. Maybe some cucumber to give it a sense of wetness. And there's something creamy, like sandalwood perhaps. Also possibly a floral note, like gardenia/tiare. And Tinadivalicious mentioned it in his review - there are some herbal notes, like eucalyptus and maybe a little hit of lavender. That herbalness is quite light; you really gotta huff it and it's the last thing you get trailing into your nose. Whatever that herbal blend is, it adds a calmess and coolness to the blend.

That said, what this scent makes me think of is a spa. You're at a spa at the beach with pitchers of cucumber water on the counter and white towels and robes fresh from the laundromat. The scent should've been called something "Spa Day" or "Beach Resort" or "Summer Holiday". It's a fresh, clean, airy, non-assuming, guest friendly, vaguely summery scent which is why folks are diggin it, compared to this next scent... Fresh Sea Walk (9085AGA7) - so hardly anyone on social media has been talking about this one (and now I know why) and I must admit, I was pretty indifferent. The name didn't draw me in and while the notes were pretty straightforward, they did absolutely nothing for me. Then I sniffed and much to my surprise, I really liked it! And, much like Salted Ocean Air, I do believe this is actual unrefomatted and unrepackaged NEWNESS!!!

So let's just get this out of the way now. *SIGH It is...cologney..which is why hardly anyone has been talking about it. If it doesn't smell like coconut or marshamllow or cupcakes or suntan lotion or fabric softener, folks on social media can't be bothered (SHADE). Anyway, this in the same family of summery/watery mandles as Nantucket Sail, Beach Day, Driftwood Surf, Ocean Mist & Citrus and Boathouse Row.

So there's a woody base, the same "driftwood" accord we see in a lot of BBW's summer/beachy mandles; driftwood usually contains wood notes like cedarwood. I also get oak, almost like the oak not that's in Bowties & Bourbon and Mahogany Coconut. There's a faint hint of something floral, but I'm hardpressed to call it "orange blossom" like the notes suggest. The notes also mention bergamot..which I don't get at all! There's nothing in this blend that would suggest the bitter and acrid and cologney bergamot note we usually get in BBw's mandles. There's a couple of things that the notes aren't mentioning. There's a note lurking in the background that gives the illusion of seawater/ocean air...which I'm gonna assume is cucumber/melon which is always the go to blend for oceanic scents. And again, Tinadivalicious said it in his review and I agree - I pick a little bit of lavender a la Seaside Mist; lavender is a common note adding cooling crispness to aquatic scents.

I'm kinda diggin this one despite the name and notes not being 100% accurate but as you know, I do have a soft spot of mandles. And 3 cheers for this being newness! Personally, I think FSW is the star of this collection! That said,  I'm not 100% in love so this might a one and done candle for me.  I think this would make a nice candle for the boudoir or mancave. For you folks goose-stepping in the anti-cologne brigade, this ain't the scent for you however it's still worth giving it a whiff

Courtyard by Marriott to open first hotel in Inverness

Work has started on a multi-million pound hotel which will see the Courtyard by Marriott brand make its debut in Inverness, Scotland.

The new 130-bedroom modular build will be situated within Inverness Airport Business Park, and according to the hotel brand will “boast thoughtfully designed guestrooms”, as well as meetings and fitness facilities, a bar and bistro.

Owned and developed by Molo Hotels, the property will be operated by UK-based independent hotel management company RBH, when it opens its doors later this year. Contractor Polcom Construction has already begun building the hotel bedrooms at its factory in Gdansk, Poland before they are transported to the hotel site ready for the final build.

The new property represents RBH and Molo Hotels’ third partnership in the past two years, having worked together to launch Courtyard by Marriott Luton Airport and Courtyard by Marriott Edinburgh West.

Andrew Robb, chief business development officer at RBH, said: “We’ve forged a strong working relationship with Molo Hotels and Polcom Construction over the years, and are thrilled to be working with them on what promises to be another outstanding property.

Ross Morrow, managing director of Molo Hotels, added: “Breaking ground on site marks a major milestone in our journey towards opening the first Courtyard by Marriott in the city of Inverness – and opening the first new-build hotel in the city for a number of years.”

“We’ve gained a vast amount of experience in developing airport hotels, as well as developing successful partnerships with Marriott and RBH, having recently worked alongside both to open the 250-bed Courtyard by Marriott Luton Airport.”

“Ugly” Bullet Journalling

Ugly bullet journals are a wonderful thing. They exist. It’s just that a lot of them are hiding, ashamed to show their pages amongst their more Insagrammable peers.

But that’s ridiculous, because it seems to me that, contrary to the perfectly measured and color-coded reputation bullet journals have garnered, this style of organization lends itself well to the messiness of life.

Mine probably qualifies as an “ugly” Bullet Journal. I’ve also seen them call a guy’s Bullet Journal or minimal. I supposed the name doesn’t matter, it just means that you’re not drawing a bunch of stuff on every page turning it into an art piece.

I’m in favour of building a tool that works for you, not one that photographs well.

This means that you’ll need to alert a reliable lawyer that can identify who is at fault and who will help you to recover your damage costs in the event of an accident.

This can save you time that you’d have end up wasting with insurance companies that only take you in circles after you make a claim.

3. Bad Things That Could Happen During the Injury Claim Process

You may think that the injury claim process after an accident should be able to run as smooth as possible especially if everything seems obvious. However, you need to remember that neither the person at fault nor the insurance company may be willing to accept the fault or even incur the damage costs. Here are some of the issues you may go through during a potential injury claim process:

The person at fault may not alert his/her insurance company about the case.

The insurance company may delay investigations and hesitate in accepting financial responsibility.

The person at fault may not have an insurance company.

In the case where you’re still trying to repay a loan on your car, you may risk your car being repossessed due to a potential relapse in payment of the same.

If the value of your car is far less than the amount of loan you still own, you risk losing your car and having to repay the overdue loan.

You can never be too careful even despite having insurance cover to always protect you against accident cases. Therefore, the best way to protect yourself is to have a vigilant lawyer that can give you a heads up regarding a potential injury claim.

IPR Seminar: Democracy & Prosperity

At this event David Soskice will discuss his new book, co-authored with Professor Torben Iversen, Democracy and Prosperity: The Reinvention of Capitalism in a Turbulent Century.

It is a widespread view that democracy and the advanced nation-state are in crisis, weakened by globalisation and undermined by global capitalism, in turn explaining rising inequality and mounting populism.

At this event David Soskice will discuss his new book, co-authored with Professor Torben Iversen, Democracy and Prosperity: The Reinvention of Capitalism in a Turbulent Century, which argues this view is wrong: advanced democracies are resilient, and their enduring historical relationship with capitalism has been mutually beneficial.

This event is part of our MSc in Public Policy Masterclass series, open to all.

David Soskice has been Professor of Political Science and Economics at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) since 2012. Before that he taught economics at Oxford, and was director of a research division at the WZB in Berlin.

He is a Fellow of the British Academy (Politics, Economics and Management sections); was President of the European Political Science Association 2011-14; and is an Honorary Fellow of Trinity College, Oxford.

New Jersey flies flags for statehood, December 18, 2018

New Jersey’s Capitol in Trenton, by Vagabond Voyage. Many complain it’s difficult to get a good, nice looking photo of this building due to development around it. This photo is alleged to be one of the better photos possible.

December 18 is New Jersey Statehood Day. 131 years ago, New Jersey became the third colony to ratify the Constitution, in 1787.

U.S. Flag Code encourages residents of each state to fly the U.S. flag on their state’s anniversary of statehood. New Jersey won consideration as the Third State, on December 18, 1787, by being the third colony to ratify the U.S. Constitution. Technically the U.S. did not come into existence until six more states ratified, but among the first 13 states, statehood dates are calculated traditionally as the day the colony ratified.

Café Conversations with our Acting Vice-Chancellor

As mentioned in his first video message, Professor Bernie Morley, Acting Vice-Chancellor, would like to invite staff to join him at Café Conversations.

A series of informal get-togethers, these Café Conversations give you the opportunity to meet with Professor Morley, hear from him and to ask your own questions.

The sessions will be held between September and December, six of which will take place on Claverton campus and one at The Virgil Building. Please see dates and times below, to register click the date you prefer.
