i think a really vital piece of adam’s character is that despite a lot of internalized classism, he has a great deal of respect for pretty much anything he doesn’t understand. like. persephone is far from the image of some esteemed ivy league professor, and yet adam trusts her wisdom 100% and recognizes that she knows things he doesn’t. same goes for his relationship with cabeswater – he works hard to communicate with it and to understand it and make himself understood in turn. even though it is an eldritch forest entity with very little comprehension of human priorities
adam turns to books for answers as his first instinct, but he never disdains more hands-on approaches. an enormous amount of his trc arc hinges on getting out of that stuffy academic headspace and into the world; he’s learning how to recognize and process his own emotions, and that process is much simpler when he doesn’t fight it.
then another really vital piece of adam’s character is that in spite of all this, he remains a COMPLETE FUCKING DUMBASS who thinks wealth and academic success are his personal keys to self-actualization. from “rags to riches isn’t a story anyone wants to hear until after it’s done” to “rags are embarrassing to begin with. let’s start with the riches and go from there” miserably walling himself off from everyone like “i don’t want anybody to understand me. i want to understand them all to their marrow and yet die lonely and emotionally unavailable. this is normal. i’m normal and fine and also normal”
enchanting. men who suck so bad and are so stupid. i am going to kiss him on the mouth

i think that all stories are about consumption, performance, and/or narrative, and the best combine elements of all three

Do you have any other favorite short stories from around the internet?
Lucky for you, I have a whole bookmarks folder just for my favorite short stories:
WHITE LINES ON A GREEN FIELD, Catherynne M. Valente
JACKALOPE WIVES, Ursula Vernon
HUNGRY DAUGHTERS OF STARVING MOTHERS, Alyssa Wong
MONSTRO, Junot Diaz
BREAKING WATER, Indrapramit Das
THE PARABLE OF THE SHOWER, Leah Bobet
SMALL CHANGES OVER LONG PERIODS OF TIME, K.M. Szpara
THE ROSE MCGREGOR DRINKING AND APPRECIATION SOCIETY, K.T. Fisher
THE HUSBAND STITCH, Carmen Machedo
SELKIE STORIES ARE FOR LOSERS, Sofia Samatar
A KISS WITH TEETH, Max Gladstone
THE PHILOSOPHERS, Adam Ehrlich Sachs
I also highly recommend all of Kelly Link’s work, Helen Oyeyemi’s “What Is Not Yours Is Not Yours,” and Ted Chiang’s work, though he remains a better ideas guy than a writer.

One is quite capable, of course, of working out these destructive passions in more vulgar and less efficient ways. But how glorious to release them in a single burst! To sing, to scream, to dance barefoot in the woods in the dead of night, with no more awareness of mortality than an animal! These are powerful mysteries. The bellowing of bulls. Springs of honey bubbling from the ground. If we are strong enough in our souls we can rip away the veil and look that naked, terrible beauty right in the face; let God consume us, devour us, unstring our bones. Then spit us out reborn.
— THE SECRET HISTORY, DONNA TARTT
