i mean i already talked about this but. the way that challengers will put in sequence three scenes of each pair in a row.... i'm thinking of art and tashi at the stanford dining hall, then art and patrick with the churros, then patrick and tashi in her dorm room. and then the day before the final it's the sauna, hotel room, car during windstorm. mindboggling to me that people are walking out of this movie with the driest takes ever of "she was toxic" or"team ____" when the movie is beating you over the head with the fact that it's about all three of them. we understood each other completely and so did everyone watching like did you not put your listening ears ON

and when I say Patrick’s loose barely-on towel that was placed there by request is a metaphor for him being comfortable and shameless in his bisexuality, and Art’s fastidiously tight towel is a metaphor for his internalized biphobia and repression, then what

because they all love and hate each other to varying degrees like patrick loves tennis and tashi and art but art the most and art loves tennis and patrick but he loves tashi the most and tashi loves tennis the most but none of them can have the thing they want most so they use one another to get closer to it and in the aftermath end up resenting each other for what could have been

back on my challengers bullshit but i think the scene where patrick asks tashi to be his coach follows by the scene with the conversation art and tashi have is such a prime example of how patrick still hasn’t grown up, he’s still clinging to the glory days of his younger days, of when he still had art and tashi. so much of what he says about art and tashis relationship is just wrong (to me). he says art won’t retire til tashi lets him, but then in the next flashback art tells tashi he wants to retire. and she does accept it, she’s not happy about it, i think they both knows it means the relationship could end and ill probably talk more deeply about that argument later but she doesn’t fight back against it. but in their scene there’s a palpable feeling of loss. it feels like their mourning by the end of it. and then tashi goes and begs patrick to throw the match “what else could it want”. they prove him wrong. patrick assumes that because that’s what he assumed their relationship was then they were teenagers. i don’t know if they truly love each other but they are safe with each other and patrick doesn’t know what that feels like anymore. he is permanently stuck at the age he lost the only two people he had.
