Star Trek: Deep Space Nine // S0610: The Magnificent Ferengi

I agree that he should have come back, but I do think he needed to go.

If you are looking at this from the queer perspective, the founders basically become the parentless children who need guidance at the end of the show and Odo is going back to teach them not to be homophobic a*holes.

okay as a huge odo person, i have to say that i really hate how what you leave behind betrayed one of the major aspects of his character that makes him so compelling to me, by having him rejoin the great link forever. anyone can see how odo is a character that can be seen through an autistic or queer lens. but one specific part of that- which ties into a larger them of the entire show, is the whole found family aspect of it. ds9 shows the cast go from having uneasy alliances to really deep connections and bonds. some examples include:

sisko doesn't want to even be assigned to the station and doesn't seem to particularly even care about the bajorans. by the end of the show he comes to see ds9 and bajor as his home.

kira resents the idea of the federation being involved with bajor but by the end of the show she's made great friendships with all of the starfleet people and even becomes a commander herself.

miles hates julian's guts at the start of the show but then they become incredibly great friends

there's just so many examples of this. over time, the cast of very unique, lonely, even outcasted people grow attached to each other and form a found family. in my interpretation, that is a very powerful queer theme that ds9 portrays and is very meaningful for me personally.

specifically when it comes to odo. odo at the start of the show is established as the only of his kind. he doesnt know who his people are. he's lonely. but then he finds the founders and actively chooses not to be with them because they suck. instead odo finds solidarity and companionship and family with the people he knows on deep space nine, notably kira. this is especially powerful when relating to queer people whose families just dont accept them or are just generally bad, and make the people in their life who actually care about them their real family. this is why i resent odo having to go back to the great link at the end of the show. it betrays his arc and it betrays that powerful message. the founders are not odos people. odos people are the friends that hes grown to rely on on the station. it feels so wrong for, at the very end of the series, for him to throw all of that away and join the link. those aren't his people. they don't love him or care for him the way the people on ds9 have. he should've told kira that he was going to come back, that he doesn't care that the founders are changelings like him. the people who actually care about him are his real people!!!!!!!
