Good Traits Gone Bad

Writing tips for long fics that helped me that no one asked for.

1.) Don't actually delete content from your WIP unless it is minor editing - instead cut it and put it in a secondary document. If you're omitting paragraphs of content, dialog, a whole scene you might find a better place for it later and having it readily available can really save time. Sometimes your idea was fantastic, but it just wasn't in the right spot.

2.) Stuck with wording the action? Just write the dialog then revisit it later.

3.) Stuck on the whole scene? Skip it and write the next one.

4.) Write on literally any other color than a white background. It just works. (I use black)

5.) If you have a beta, while they are beta-ing have them read your fic out loud. Yes, I know a lot of betas/writers do not have the luxury of face-timing or have the opportunity to do this due to time constraints etc but reading your fic out loud can catch some very awkward phrasing that otherwise might be missed. If you don't have a beta, you read it out loud to yourself. Throw some passion into your dialog, you might find a better way to word it if it sounds stuffy or weird.

6.) The moment you have an idea, write it down. If you don't have paper or a pen, EMAIL it to yourself or put it in a draft etc etc. I have sent myself dozens of ideas while laying down before sleep that I 10/10 forgot the next morning but had emailed them to myself and got to implement them.

7.) Remember - hits/likes/kudos/comments are not reflective of the quality of your fic or your ability to write. Most people just don't comment - even if they say they do, they don't, even if they preach all day about commenting, they don't, even if they are a very popular blog that passionately reminds people to comment - they don't comment (I know this personally). Even if your fic brought tears to their eyes and it haunted them for weeks and they printed it out and sent it to their friends they just don't comment. You just have to accept it. That being said - comment on the fic you're reading now, just do it, if you're 'shy' and that's why you don't comment the more you comment the better you'll get at it. Just do it.

8.) Remove unrealistic daily word count goals from your routine. I've seen people stress 1500 - 2000 words a day and if they don't reach that they feel like a failure and they get discouraged. This is ridiculous. Write when you can, but remove absurd goals. My average is 500 words a day in combination with a 40 hour a week job and I have written over 200k words from 2022-2023.

9.) There are dozens of ways to do an outline from precise analytical deconstruction that goes scene by scene to the minimalist bullet point list - it doesn't matter which one you use just have some sort of direction. A partial outline is better than no outline.

10.) Write for yourself, not for others. Write the fic you know no one is going to read. Write the fic that sounds ridiculous. You will be so happy you put it out in the world and there will be people who will be glad it exists.

Instead, it quickly became the laughing stock of the fandom. So later, Ian would write a proper finale for the Chosen One prophecy, and also bring back Mammoth Mogul, rendering this story pointless to the overall plot. Oh, and we’ll never see this form of Tails ever again, because. I mean, look at him. Look at Tails’ muscles with your fucking eyes. Don’t look away, you cowards

Unexpected Part Two of THIS THING. Old design + a bit of info can be found HERE.

I was just going to keep everything else the same after the redesign of the base outfit, but I decided that I kinda liked the idea of Ghost (masked Mint/their workname basically as sort of odd jobs renegade) visually reading as a human rather than obviously a Psion by having the armored bits cover up the ears + tail in their fully masked form.

I am aware I have died on this hill before but people who really strenuously argue that fanfic isn't "real writing" drive me insane. what do you meeeaaaaannn. besides the fact that any attempt to define "real art" vs "fake art" is inherently reactionary, it just doesn't make any sense. it's Writing. people Write it. what the fuck are you talking about.

#YEAH like at the end of the day? I don't think that there's such a thing as anything that's 100% original #in the sense that most things have already been done and anything that comes after mostly repacks things that have already been done in new #forms a la differing characters worlds etc #anyone that claims that they didn't draw inspiration from anything is lying because #conscious or not we all take in the ideas and concepts proposed by various media consumed #and as a a result are in fact influenced and shaped by it especially when young #ALSO idgaf about fanfics being 'bad' quality because everyone starts somewhere #no one starts out being an amazing writer right off the bat and gatekeeping writing like that #by shitting on 'bad' writers and discouraging 'bad quality' content only #ever prevents them from improving the way these so-called 'critics' would hope and discourages their #participation in the fandom which is pretty shitty #writing only gets better if someone writes more and gains more experience as a result so ofc #one might churn out A LOT of 'bad quality' fics before their writing improves #to finish off my HUGE ramblings here-- at the end of the day #we were ALL 'cringe' or 'bad writers' at some point so like don't act like you weren't #or like you've better than the people that produce 'bad quality' content just because you're #'original' (which you aren't) or a solid writer /now/

“Magic?”

The class went silent, with the exception of several suppressed laughs. The wide auditorium was lined with row after row of students, attending a lecture on the advancement and evolution of psionic abilities. Behind a massive board there was a gigantic window that made up the back wall of the room, outside a steady flows of ships sped by, a thousand thousand lives all occupied with business somewhere in vast Nucade City.

The older man giving the lecture was a tall Gyiyg with red-orange fur and piercing deep green eyes, he wore a long white robe, down the front of it was a design made up of three vertical line in the colors orange, green, and blue. He eyed the students, waiting for them to quiet down before he continued speaking.

“Not quite. Certain pagan sects have refereed to it as such and these misconceptions have prevailed through time, permeating our very etymology as with the word ‘Magicant’.”

The man walked over to the large hard-light board tapping it as he continued speaking.

“Or in the case of the incandescent insects colloquially known as ‘Magic Butterflies’ you’ll see the prefix ‘Magi-’ shows up again. Studying Old Caedish tells us that this root word has several meanings.”

“‘Magi’, ‘one who is masterful or wise’. The word in Nevidian directly translates into ‘Maki’ , ‘as he who ascends the hill’, this hill being both metaphysical and metaphorical, symbolizing adversary. And finally ’Ma’ge’. Take note that this third translation is pronounced the same way as the first ‘Magi’.”

Each student added the detail to their digital notepads as the Gyiyg paused to allow them the time to finish writing before he continued.

“’Ma’ge’ ‘he who obtains knowledge by ethereal means’. These words all hint to the nature of PSI, today we’ll be discussing how it has advanced over the years. Can someone give the text book definition of PSI?”

A green Mook wearing a black vest and matching long black scarf raised a tentacle. “PSI is the harnessing, coercion and shaping of a worlds natural energy.”

“Correct. Every psychic has an aptitude for one of the four types of PSI.”

The information appeared on the board as the Gyiyg spoke.

“Assist PSI; The creation of shields and the power to affect and afflict friend and foe.”

“Offensive PSI; Psychokinetic manipulation of elements and energy for the purpose of destruction.” “Recovery PSI; The healing arts mending injuries, revitalizing oneself and others and cleansing the body of all ailments.”

“And the set of abilities simply defined as Other; Telepathy, Teleportation, 4-th Dimension Slip, and Telekinesis.”

“Can someone tell me the term used to describe beings able to use all four types of PSI?”

A Gyiyg girl in the front row raised her hand, her fur was sky blue with pure white designs going up her body from head to toe, lines that matched her white eyes.

“A Savant.” She answered, eager to make up for her wrong answer earlier.

The Priest in his long robes nodded. He was about to continue when another student raised his hand with a question. A Nevidian a bipedal insectiod, with four arms, four purple eyes and fine hairs the color of sand.

As he spoke his words resonated with a slight buzz. “Wwwhat about the ‘Unperceivable Attacks?’”

The man frowned and sharpened his gaze, staring daggers at the young man. Waiting just till the boy was about to retract his question.

“At this time these abnormalities have no valid account of their existence, and until such a time that the standing council of Regalius Psiconus’ and High Priestess of the Three Fold Faith recognize such an ability, I’ll not lend it any credence, that is the last we will speak of it.” A hush fell as the old priest scanned the room, seeing in every face that his word was heeded he continued.

“Now, beyond the standard four classifications we come to Innate Abilities and Psionic Techniques.”

“Both’s appearances are known to accompany momentous moments in history. Innate Abilities began to crop up around the start of the war between the Order of the Sundered Veil and the Caed Kingdoms before the establishment of the Umwelt Accords and the beginning of the United Virindis Age.”

“This is the first example of PSI growing and shifting with necessity, It is also observed in Xilian, Nevidian, Gyiyg, Mook and Saturn histories that this change was consistent throughout the universe as the records the Mooks and Saturns brought, show that even before they entered ‘Solaras’ Embrace’ this change was observed among the populous.”

“The second example is the advent of PSI Techniques that followed the start of the Virindis War and subsequent signing of the Accords. Can anyone tel-” A loud bell trilled cutting the Gyiyg off, the students began packing away their supplies and heading for the door.

The old man called after them as they left. “Tomorrow we will be discussing ‘Innate Abilities and Psionic Techniques’ in more depth, be sure to study pages one ninety and one ninety-one tonight.”

#My GOD I remember reading the posts from this whole story on the way to my old job and back #The writing is appealing to me ofc and very engaging but beyond that #what I especially enjoyed was the creativity and worldbuilding #idk if I'm allowed to reblog this like I don't see anything saying either or so ???#unless I'm told otherwise up on my blog to be saved it goes lol #but yeah like one thing I miss about the Mother fandom is the sheer creativity #that people could show when it was at its best + most lively #it's a shame that even then it was difficult to get traction for original stories like this #because this one in particular I personally enjoyed quite a bit and still look back on it from time-to-time #long post /#.fanfic (mother series)
