Rare non Precure post from me, but since I don't use my old blog, here's fine.

Have some photos of the eclipse yesterday! We were fortunate to have a bright, clear day for optimal viewing. I live south of the path of totality, but the visible portion of the sun got down to a sliver while I was watching. Despite that, the light outside was only a bit dimmer than usual at the peak of the eclipse, and I didn't feel any temperature change. If you didn't know what was going on, you wouldn't think anything was happening. This is the second solar eclipse I've seen in my life, that I recall, the first was the 2017 eclipse. It was fun and a bit surreal.

On the Go Go movie, OtonaPre, and the future of the blog

It's definitely been radio slient around here for too long. I'm sorry, as always. The Yes 5 Go Gomovie review has been basically done for months, but I need to give it another pass and I haven't been motivated to do that. In fact I've been motivated to do anything BUT that. I could list so many arbitrary deadlines I wanted to have this out by:

The premiere of OtonaPre

But here we are and none of them have come to pass. My current goal is to get the series knocked out by the end of the year. Preferably sooner, because I wanted to take a break before I come back with a vengeance in 2024 with an all new, simplified format to facilitate true daily content. At the current rate I may still not be done with Go Go by that point, which.... would suck. But I'll try to motivate myself. Which brings me to my next point.

Lack of motivation is strong. It's because I slowly let this warp into a colossal project that requires more work than I'm able to maintain, and my capacity has been reduced in turn. There's not a good reason this wasn't finished months ago, i've literally just been putting it off. I've still been watching HiroSky more or less weekly (which is more than I can say for DeliPa, still haven't finished that) so it's not that I've lost interest in Precure. It's just this particular project is difficult.

Otona Precure has just come out, and I'm honestly thinking I'm going to hold off on watching it until I finish watching and reviewing Go Go, so maybe I can turn this into the motivation I need to finish the show. I am excited to see my girls all grown up, this is unprecedented territory for the franchise in a year that has been all about exceeding my expectations. I WANT to see it, but I also want to see how the original ends first (or refresh my memory, since it's been about 10 years at this point since I first watched it all the way through).

As always we shall see where the future takes us but I am going to try to put forth some effort to tidy up the movie review soon so I can move on.

PS I know I didn't make a post about Hikari's birthday. I'm sorry. I might try to do a late one. Nagisa's birthday is on Tuesday, I'm not going to miss that.

You all deserve the truth about the Precure 5 Go Go movie review.

It was basically done 2 months ago. I’ve been sitting on it all this time, “proofreading” it, trying to make it the review I really want, trying to find and correct the obvious holes and flaws in it. I was proud of the first Y5 movie review, and I want this to be in the same vein. But I have not invested a lot of time in this endeavor.

I want to finish this review, or so I say. I want to finish this series, and then move on. It wasn’t supposed to become a chore that I avoid doing.

I keep setting mental deadlines for myself. They come and they go. I find excuses. Oh, tonight I’m busy doing this. I’ll do it this weekend. The weekend comes and i go out or I work on something else.

This probably sounds like a depressed rant. Maybe it is.

While I’m going to end the project (in its current state) after Go Go, I still want to at least be able to limp across the finish line. I don’t think I’d be in this state if I skipped the movie and went to episode 38, 39, etc. I’m not that far from the end of the show.

I don’t need this review to be my magnum opus but I want it to be good, and I’m avoiding what I need to do to make it good.

I’m sorry.

I don’t have much of an update but I figured I ought to say something since it’s been so long.

The movie review is nearly done. I’m having my editors review it, I need to go over it, rearrange some thoughts, flesh out some things, give it a good polish, but it will be out soon.

Movie Notes

Been a bit, hasn’t it? I’m still working on finalizing the movie reivew, but I figured since it’s been a month I should give you something to hold you over. I took hella notes for this movie, and I”m still working on compressing them down so it’s not another 20k word novella. But I kinda like these notes and don’t just want them to go to waste, so I”m going to do something new. I’m presenting my unedited notes for your reading pleasure. This ma or may not become a regular thing, we’ll see, but enjoy this for now!

Movie update

Hi all. Sorry it’s been almost a month. I’ve been working on it I promise. Even though I use VLC to automate screenshots, I still have to supplement them with some manual additions, and as this is a movie, there’s more to deal with. I had a hard time finding time to sit down and rewatch it to take my notes and get more screenshots. Finally got to do so. Now I just have to organize my thoughts. So let me explain what we have here.

The left screen is the actual movie, running in MPC-HC. Then on the right side of the right screen we have VLC’s automated gallery, which has about 800 images. On the top left are my notes, and on the bottom left are my own screenshots that will supplement/replace the ones VLC took. About 150 of those.

I need to trim the album down a bit, that’s almost 1000 pictures combined, which is double my record from the last movie. I also need to compress my notes because the majority of that is just plot recap, which I intend to be more manageable this time.

So what’s going to happen is I’ll do that and I’ll start organizing my notes and adding more thoughts as I trim out the “here’s what literally happened” descriptions, and add in screenshots in the middle of all that, and then maybe give the movie another watch so I can compare it with the first YPC5 movie (they’re very structurally similar). Maybe (very maybe) I’ll make some gifs and video clips to show off the animation.

ALso, Go Go Dream Live is done but needs a final pass and I’m going to do that when they’re both done so they flow together well. They’ll be posted together. Give me another week or two tops I hope. I don’t want these to roll into June.

That’s the state of things. If you want something to do while waiting, reread all my reviews and leave some thoughts, or place bets on when Cure Butterfly is going to debut in Hirogaru Sky, or go watch Zombie Land Saga. (That has nothing to do with Precure beyond a few shared voice actors, it’s just a really good show and I want more people to see it)

So I’m finally working on reviewing Go Go Dream Live and the Go Go movie, a literal month after watching them, a week after my 5th anniversary where i wanted to be done with the series, yada yada, here we are. So. I’d heard that the blu ray copy of GGDL was missing a scene that was seen in the theatrical, or at least the DVD cut, of the short film, which showed that Fusion had the power of Zakenna, Uzaina, and Kowaiina. So I went to track down a copy of it to compare to the blu ray copy. What I found out was that the BD copy is in fact missing a lot more footage than that. I mean, it’s not SUBSTANTIAL, all told I think it comes out to 11 seconds, but I was trying to play them side by side and the blu ray copy kept getting ahead. So I went and did a thorough comparison and I found out that many of the individual shots in the BD version have been cut down. 5 frames here, 10 frames there, amounting to fractions of a second. But it adds up. I went through both versions shot by shot, comparing the start and end point of each scene, and my takeaway is that they cut down lingering shots. I might try to post a comparison but in the meantime, here’s a look at my spreadsheet. Yes this did tak ea lot of time. I tend to get caught up on weird things.

Also, I might be spoiling material from my actual review, but it’s been long enough that you deserve something. There’s some crowd shots in Dream Live that have a ton of detail if you take the time to look at them. At first glance you might just recognize a few characters, but when you have the chance to pause and absorb it, you’ll realize JUST how many characters are in here.... including some villains!

Also this might be the first time we’ve seen Mika wearing something other than her uniform.
