Teaching Tip: Build Your Culture and Climate with Attendance Questions
Everyone knows that the social and emotional well-being of a child is just as important as their academic skills. In fact, our district just put “Culture and Climate” at the top of our teacher evaluations. If a student doesn’t feel safe and loved in each classroom, they they aren’t going to learn. Period.
Sure, there many ways to build a positive culture in your classroom, such as standing outside your door while students are coming in, giving them opportunities to define the rules in your classroom, letting them choose their seats, going to their extra-curricular activities, giving them a survey, etc. However, one of the BEST ways (in my opinion), is to spend time really getting to know your students on Day 1 of the school year. That being said, you need to spend time getting to know them every. single. day. of. the. year!
For the first five or ten minutes, my class never started with silent reading or a writing prompt; it started with an attendance question. Each day, I would ask a question (you can see my list below of questions), and I would take attendance by having each student answer the question. My students told me they love this part of the class because it gives their brain time to transition from one class or subject to the next. They also explained that this was a great way to get to learn about each other…who has similar answers, funny answers, and/or were extremely creative each time. In middle school, you never know what answers you are going to get. One year, I had a group of boys that somehow worked in a Morgan Freeman answer every single time. Last year, a boy answered with something about curry each day.
So, what does this look like? Up in the front of my classroom, I have a podium with a “special stool,” and on that podium is my list of questions and a print out of student’s names. For the first week, I tell the students my question, and I call on each student for their answer. When everyone is done, I tell them my answer to the question. (You’ll learn that if you give your answer first, you will have at least ten other students give that same answer.) This is a great way to learn the names of students as well. It is always my goal to learn every single name by the end of the week, even when I have 170 students. There is no way I could do achieve this without doing the attendance question first.
At the end of the first week and for the rest of the year, I have a different student each day that does the attendance question. Obviously, this would be more difficult if you teach students under third grade, but here is why I do it. The students LOVE sitting in the special chair up front with this responsibility (yes, even teenagers). It also gives me time to sit at my desk for five minutes while I am doing the attendance on my computer at the same time (yay, a chance to sit down), or I am spending that time passing back papers and handling individual student needs.
Some of you may question whether you can give up those five or ten minutes of class. My answer is yes! When you build a positive culture and climate in your room, you are saving yourself time from discipline problems later on in the year. Maybe you have that one student that makes you want to poke your eye out, and then you learn that you both share a love of horses. What better way than to connect with that student. I have also learned that the students start to feel like a family and become protective of each other, as long as you don’t allow negativity or snickering during the attendance questions. I stress that there is never a wrong answer; every one gets to feel how they feel. Kids are vulnerable, and it’s important to set up that safe place for them. If you allow students to make fun of an answer, you are actually killing the positive culture in your room, and NOW you are wasting your time in the beginning of class. Have you ever met a person who doesn’t like to share something about themselves? No, me neither.
This year, remember that the social/emotional part of a child is just as important as the subject that you are teaching. You may find that students never want to leave the room during the attendance question. There is a reason for that. Create that classroom where kids may pause before wanting to leave the room.

If your book requires a lot of scene changes, you should learn how to craft unique locations that help drive your story forward. In fantasy novels (or just most novels in general), no one wants to read a book where all the scenes takes place in the same location. Obviously this depends on your story, but you’ll most likely need to switch it up a bit.
Think about Harry Potter—most of the early books take place at Hogwarts, but Hogwarts is so interesting and there are so many mysteries, it never gets boring. Hogwarts itself is a location, but all the pieces that make up Hogwarts keep it fascinating. Even if the story does take place in the same location, you need to make that location interesting. There can be different aspects of it that you and your readers can explore, just like at Hogwarts.
Here are a few ways to craft unique and interesting locations for your story:
Think about how your scene would change in a different location.
Try imagining a scene in different locations and see what’s most interesting. A scene in a science fiction story might be more interesting in a busy space port, than in a boring normal room. The locations you choose should affect the story somehow. For example, a space port would allow you to explore the different types of people in your sci-fi world, which would let you explain how people interact with each other. Use the genre to your advantage and craft your locations accordingly.
P.S. I don’t really know if a space port is a real thing, but in my mind it’s an airport for space ships in the future. ^_^
Let your locations motivate you.
There are certain scenes that get me excited and I can’t wait to write them. That can have a lot to do with the location of your scene. If there’s a really cool place you want to explore in your own story, you’re probably excited about getting to it. That will help you stay on point with your writing goals. Don’t be afraid to try something new or create a location that you’re not sure is going to work. You might surprise yourself and add unique elements to your story you wouldn’t have otherwise. Locations can inspire you to take your story in a new direction, so let them!
If there’s a location you’re not sure about, take a little extra time to plan it out.
Sometimes we don’t plan out our locations enough because we think they’ll flesh themselves out. However, if you don’t truly know the scene you’re about to write, you run the risk of creating a boring story. Maybe sketch a room or write down what you want to be included. This might help you in the long run because you’ll have something to reference back to. You’ll also be able to figure out what you want each character to be doing and what the possible distractions are. Write enough so that your readers will be able to visualize it too.

How Your Character Views the World
When developing your characters, establishing how they view the world is just as important as their motivations, wants, and needs. This will help you set the tone or your novel and will also let your readers know how your character has been shaped as a result of how they view the world around them. Our environment does play a part in shaping who we are, so it should do the same for your characters. Understanding how they view their world is important because it will show how they go about getting what they want/need.
Try asking yourself these questions:
How does your character interact with the world?
Does your character view your world in a positive light? Negative light? Are they indifferent to it?
What defenses has your character put up due to this viewpoint?
How are their goals affected by the world they’re in?
Has this world helped them gain anything? Has it caused them to lose something important?
Here are a few tips on using your world to build a stronger character:
Figure out how your character has developed as a result of your world.
The way your character sees the world around them has to do with their perception of it. Your own perception of the world helps build your personality, so it will do the same for your characters—which is why world building is so important. Your character has had experiences in this world that have shaped the way the act, the way they think, the way they feel, etc. This has helped developed them in some way. Figure out how those experiences have shaped them.
Develop how your character’s attitude matches the tone and feel of your world.
If your character is dark and brooding due to their horrible experiences in this world, the tone of your novel should match that. As readers, we should see the world in the same way. We need to understand why your character is feeling a certain way, so your world should reflect their struggles. You need to show why they’re so upset, instead of just telling us “well, that’s just how it is for them.” Explain the situations you’re building.
Understand how your world either helps or hinders your character’s goals.
Has living in this particular world been a positive or negative experience for your character? For example, a character could be ripped from a place they love or it could be threatened by the antagonist. There are many things you can do with your character’s relationship to their world. Is this world in danger? Is the antagonist doing something to put this world in danger? Is the world actually causing the protagonist’s problems? Whatever is standing in your character’s way could be from a combination of different factors.

1. If you are a beginner and you are about to start to learn by yourself, there are thousands of helpful apps like Dueling, which are totally free and a good start for you to start this beautiful journey.
2. Start by trying to understand the pronunciation and the alphabet. If you understand this by the very beginning, it will save you the struggle by trying to read new words.
3. Look on the internet for the most basic grammar and structure rules. This way you will be a little bit less lost while trying to figure out why something is written like if Yoda was talking. Yeah languages are so much fun….
4. Use a notebook just for your language learning, make it beautiful and make yourself sure that its legible.
5. Start by looking for the most important verbs to learn and conjugations, then write them down. For example: verb to be, to be called, to have, to need, to go, to walk, to say, to talk, to see…
6. As well is very important to learn basic phrases that are used almost every day like “Hi, how are you?”. I also recommend to learn: How do you say …. in (language). It is very handy if you’re with a person that already speak your language.
7. When learning new vocabulary ( principally easy one) try to draw or put an image next to the word and not to traduce it in your language. This because you will be applying something I like to call the baby method. Babies don’t know how to talk, however they learn the meaning of thing really quick through watching images and associating.
8. Talking about babies, how about to use one of those card games with images for babies? Common! It’s adorable and effective. Also this image effect helps you to need less to think things first in your language.
9. Post- it notes! This is an amazing thing I used to learn german when I was starting my walk through this language filled with love and slaps once you discover it has different cases. When for example you learn the word “ Der Spiegel” go and post it in your mirror :D
10. Practice EVERY DAY! It is worth it. Try at least 10 minutes. Aldo try to talk with native speakers, and if you don’t know any there is an amazing app called Tandem that gives you the opportunity to talk with natives as well as to help them with the language they are learning.
