Conceptual: I was scrolling through TikTok and saw an artist swinging a can of paint in a pendulum and letting it drip onto the canvas as it swung. From the video I thought that it would be an interesting art piece to create. I quickly found out that pendulum painting is a much more complex and intricate procedure than doing it in your backyard.
Aesthetic: I chose red and blue to be two contrasting colors that would make each other pop. I chose to (try to) do a pendulum painting because whenever I see them done in videos I find that the end result is just as pleasing as watching the pendulum swing back and forth.
Class inspiration: For this piece I was inspired by the work of Jackson Pollack. I like Pollack’s chaotic work and how every piece of paint seems to be doing its own thing. After I realized how difficult the pendulum would be, I morphed the piece into something chaotic, without a sense of order.

Conceptual: The person that I chose to make my piece of art for was my mom. Her favorite animal is pigs and pig-themed items are always a go to when trying to buy her birthday and Christmas presents. Since this is going to be our first Christmas without a tree, I wanted to make something that we could use instead. The four pigs around the tree are meant to symbolize the four members of my family. I also collaged in some baby pictures of my sister and I.
Aesthetic : For this piece of art I wanted to create something with a clear meaning that what my mom means to our family. The use of the word “mother” on the trunk of the tree showcases how she is out strong, sturdy bases in life. I went with a representational piece of art to hone in on the meaning of the piece.
Class inspiration: I took inspiration from some of the still-life pieces of art. I started with the big tree in the middle and used my pictures and other objects to create nuance and center the importance of the tree.

I placed my note card on a chair in a classroom in Plassman. For my message, I wanted to create something inspirational for whoever finds it as final exams approach. I want whoever finds it to know that they have put in all the effort they could this semester and that they are almost at the finish line.
Attendance:
"What they wanted- at a suitable price- was an Egyptian mummy. "It may appear strange to you," the notice read, "but we require our mummy for making color." Then to stave off any pricks of public conscience, they continued: "Surely a 2,000-year-old mummy of an Egyptian monarch may be used for adorning a noble fresco in Westminster Hall or elsewhere without giving offense to the ghost of the departed gentleman or his descendants" (pg 253).
I thought this quote was interesting because I would never have guessed that mummies could be used to make a color pigment. I also thought it was interesting how the people that wanted to use the mummy were British and I found that their statement about not offending the descendants of the mummy had a very colonial imperialistic view towards it.

I started off by using a random number generator to give me numbers to correspond to the colors I would be using. I then created an outline for where my table would be and a planned out the colors for each section. I decided to use my brighter colors to depict the table as from a top-down sort of view, and the difference in the vibrancy between what I used in marker and in colored pencil really popped. With my blue section I wanted the boat and fish to give off a ocean vibe. I noticed that the pictures I used for the collage were all things that seem to be “extra” and things that give pleasure. I chose to morph the flower pot with the phone sitting in it, to symbolize the growth of technology in our daily lives and how far it has advanced. I chose to animate the cruise ship.
Attendance:
“ A recent survey conducted across 10 different countries on four continents found that blue was people’s favorite color by a considerable margin. Similar surveys conducted since the First World War returned similar results. It seems blue, once considered the color of degenerates and barbarians, has conquered the world” (pg. 181)
I thought that this was interesting because I have never associated the color blue with degeneracy. A lot of my friends that I have had over the years have said that blue is their favorite color so it’s interesting to see that there are actual statistics showing how popular the color blue is amongst people.

I decided that I was going to draw my roommate Tommy again. I chose to go with a dramatic backdrop and gave it a religious/biblical tone with the golden aura in the background in front of the darkness of the black behind, like a stain glass window. I went with a more abstract depiction this time, taking inspiration from the portraits of Picasso.
Attendance:
"Because of this mad desire, and the expense of creating Tyrian, purple became the symbolic color of opulence, excess, and rulers. To be born into the purple was to be born into royalty, after the Byzantine custom of bedecking the royal chambers with porphyry and Tyrian cloth so that it would be the first thing the ne princelings saw" (pg. 160).
The first thing that I thought of when I saw this quote was the character of Tyrion Lannister from Game of Thrones. Even though the names are spelled slightly differently, I thought that the description of Tyrian fit in very well with Tyrion. Tyrion was born into a royal family, that had a long legacy of ruling. He lived an expensive, rich lifestyle. He also wore clothes that had a similar tone to Tyrian purple.

I drew a portrait of one of my roommates, Tommy. He has been one of my closest friends since freshman year. One thing I admire about him is his humor, as we both have a similar sense of humor and we will always be cracking jokes with each other. I also admire how he is able to grow a beard, and he has had it since before we even met.

I found the large stone first and immediately knew that I wanted that to be the center of my artwork. After finding some more rocks I was able to figure out that I wanted to create a Pokéball, as an homage to the smash-hit video game and cartoon series Pokémon. I found a nice, clear mossy area by a tree that allowed the rocks to really stand out compared to the color of the moss.
Activity 3

I hosted a wine and paint night with my roommates. We chose to do a Halloween theme and found a photo on the internet that we had to replicate. All three of us found that we were able to get really close to some parts of the original but then absolutely butchered other parts of it.

“The Spanish were desperate to exploit the region’s natural resources, and they were not slow to capitalize on them once they gained control. Along with gold and silver, cochineal provided the financial sinew on which the Spanish Empire depended. One observer wrote that in the year 1587 alone, around 144,000 pounds or 72 tons of cochineal were shipped from Lima to Spain. (That is roughly 10,080,000,000 insects)” (pg 142).
I thought this was a very interesting and also shocking fact to read. When I think of how European colonial empires exploited the labor and resources of civilizations in the Western Hemisphere, I tend to only think about the well known resources that were taken. I would have never thought about how important to the financial prosperity the blood of a single species of insect could be.

I started this with a skull and had an idea of interweaving two snakes through it. While I was drawing the snakes I decided to morph them into an ourboros. The ourobos represents infinity and the idea of life and death, which I felt went perfect with the idea of a skull. I then added the flames in the eyes and nose of the skull, to symbolize both the life-giving and deadly aspects of fire

One thing that I am really into is Formula 1. Eventually, I want to attend a race at every race location. I drew a sketch of a Formula 1 car, and outlines of three of the races that I would most like to witness in person, colored in with the colors of their flag. Currently there are 23 races across 20 countries and 6 continents.

1) I was born on January 21, so I am an Aquarius.
2) The color that is associated with an Aquarius is blue. One animal that is associated with Aquarius is the owl. The owl represents the kind and humanitarian aspects of Aquarius, as well as the unpredictable and independent nature.
3) the planet that is associated with Aquarius is Uranus. Aquarius is linked to Uranus because Uranus is the planet of freedom and revolutionary vision, the urge for change and the ability to visualize new possibilities.
4) I added the Aquarius glyph, the two lines, which represents the flow of energy. I also added the vase of the Water Bearer, which is the constellation name of Aquarius.
Attendance:
“Police and forensic scientists were called in. They discovered that a crime had indeed taken place, but that they were about 50,000 years too late to catch the culprits” (pg 106).
I thought that this quote was interesting because of how old the bones were that were found. I found it amazing that even after 50,000 years police were able to find evidence of the hair color of someone so long ago. It also made me think about how DNA has become such an important part for crime scene investigations and how far that technology has come.

1). The animal that I chose is the African cheetah. I chose this as my animal because growing up it was always my favorite animal because of how fast they can run, and I was always the fastest person in my friend group and on my soccer team. The cheetah is the fastest land mammal and can reach speeds of up to 70 mph.
2). My favorite music to listen to during the fall is classical music. My favorite fall movie is Coraline.
3). The first season of American Idol premiered in 2002. I chose to depict this because of the memories I have of watching American Idol with my family every night when it was on TV.
4). The song that I chose is Sweet Caroline by Neil Diamond. Growing up I always thought that the lyrics to the song were “Sweet Cherry Pie”, and this became an inside joke with my family, and every time that we Hera the song played we say that instead of the actual lyrics.

Attendance prompt:
“And while the star the Nazis forced Jews to wear is the most notorious example of yellow as a symbol of stigma, other marginalized groups had been forced to wear yellow clothes or signs from the early Middle Ages” (pg 65).
I thought that this passage was interesting because I had never really thought of yellow being used as a symbol of stigma and to point out marginalized groups. To me yellow has always been a color that expresses happiness and joy. This made me think about what other colors and things are being used to hold others back that are not out in the open.

Hey Anu, I really like how you used the flowers to fill in the space of your piece and add color and detail to the aspects of the room. Your piece made me think about how we can use pieces of a whole items for different uses and create a dynamic environment in our art. It also made me think about how much we waste as a society when we could use full pieces of things instead of throwing out what we don’t use.

red maple: Otherwise known as Acer rubrum, the red maple is considered one of the most spread deciduous trees. Something special about this tree is that it has a different form in every season. During the winter, the tree has buds while there are flowers in the spring. During the summer the tree has green leaves while they turn red during the fall.
pin oak: Pin oak is also known as quercus palustris. This tree is known as one of the tallest trees in Kentucky but it is mainly native to Illinois.
annual asters: These flowers are cool weather annual plants and they take 6 weeks to bloom. They are also known as the China aster and they are different from many asters because they do not bloom perennial.
Attendance:
In his book titled The Secret Lives of Color, Perkin states that "because of its link with light, white has laid deep roots in the human psyche and, like anything divine, can simultaneously inspire awe and instill terror in the human heart." (Perkin, 43) I picked this passage because I never thought about the meaning of the color white. This is especially because many do not even recognize the color since it doesn't express an actual shade such as the primary color. I always thought black "instilled terror" while white had a more uplifting connotation. I thought it was really interesting for the author to point out that the color white has both a good and bad meaning. This makes sense because even in Indian culture, the color white is associated with death and it is the color that people wear to funerals.

Sugar Maple (large orange leaf)- the sugar maple is the primary source of maple syrup. Seeds from the sugar maple tree have to be exposed to 45 days of temperatures below 39° in order to break their protective coating to germinate.
Helenium autumnale (yellow bulbous flower)- Also known as common sneezeweed. Common sneezeweed does not cause seasonal allergies, despite its name, which comes from the leaves of the plant being used in snuff to cast out evil spirits.
Lance-leaved aster (skinny plant with white flowers)- This plant was introduced into parts of Europe, where its production of chemicals causes harm to other plants and has been named an invasive species. Aster has been used by indigenous tribes to treat wounds, nosebleeds, and fevers.
“Lead white May have helped the painted occupant of the Goguryeo tomb remain fresh, but then he was already dead. The pigment has seldom been a friend to the living” (pg 46).
I thought that this passage was interesting because it never occurred to me that lead paint had been around for so long. When I think of lead paint I think of houses that were painted using lead paint and it feels like more a recent discovery than being used in the B.Cs. I also found it interesting that even though all these people that were using lead paint and wearing lead-based makeup kept dying, there was no movement to stop the use of lead based products.

“Even when the documentary evidence, such as a painting, remains, we are often seeing it in lighting conditions entirely different from the ones it was created in. It’s the difference between looking at a house-paint sample on your computer screen, in the can at your local hardware store, and then on the walls in your home” (Pg. 27).
I chose this quote because it resonated with me and reminded me of when I was trying to paint my bedroom. I remember going to a Home Depot and taking a bunch of paint sample cards to put against my wall, but once I had finally chosen a color and began to paint, the paint looked like a whole different color compared to the sample card. Then a few years later when I needed a little more to touch up some spots, the paint that they mixed together seemed like a whole new shade compared to the first coat that I had used.
