So I 'liked' this person for a while... Four years, in fact. Recently, I found out that they didn't like me romantically. I thought I was going to be heartbroken. I'm not. I realized how shallow my 'love' was for them. That all I took into account was their pretty eyes. Their pretty hair. Their pretty reputation. Then I look at my current relationships. Romantic or not. I think if I ever lost them, or found out they never liked me, would I care? Most of the people I said 'no' to, I never really knew. I wanted to be close to them because they were popular, they were cute, they occasionally cracked a good joke. And I realized when those people would hurt me, I would take them back every time. It’s official: A federal judge has overturned Mississippi’s ban on same-sex couples adopting children. That means it’s finally legal in all 50 states for a same-sex couple to adopt. 

Mississippi’s law banning same-sex adoption went into effect in 2000. Alabama, Florida, Nebraska and Michigan all had similar bans in place, but while theirs were all overturned, Mississippi’s remained. Until now. 

U.S. District Judge Daniel Jordan issued a preliminary injunction against the ban, citing the Supreme Court’s decision legalizing same-sex marriage nationwide last summer. The injunction blocks Mississippi from enforcing its 16-year-old anti-gay adoption law.

The Supreme Court ruling “foreclosed litigation over laws interfering with the right to marry and rights and responsibilities intertwined with marriage,” Jordan wrote. “It also seems highly unlikely that the same court that held a state cannot ban gay marriage because it would deny benefits — expressly including the right to adopt — would then conclude that married gay couples can be denied that very same benefit.”

VOCALiD is an app for use via iPhone that allows users to essentially donate their voice so that it may be used to create synthetic speech for those with severe speech impediments, or otherwise without clear voices of their own.

All you need to become a speech donor is an internet connection, a microphone, and a quiet environment to record in.  Your voice will be blended with those of others in order to create new, unique synthetic voices suited to each recipient (i.e., no worries if you’re concerned with anyone recognizing your voice coming from someone else).

Contributing your voice to the Human Voice Bank Initiative costs nothing, and only requires signing up for a free VOCALiD account.  If you’d like to become even further involved with the project, I’m sure they wouldn’t mind volunteers or donations (but, again–you aren’t obligated to give anything more than what you want to).  Just reading through the various given sentences may eventually give someone else the ability to convey those same sentences in a voice made just for them.
