SMT V and mythology
While many game franchises make use of mythology to some degree, Shin Megami Tensei is arguably the only one known for extraordinary dedication to the source material, with not only designs but even major plot points often being lifted directly from mythology or at least from literature (of varying quality) pertaining to it. In the following article I will look into how SMT V fares in that regard, relying chiefly on the portrayal of some of the plot-relevant demons, though I will also evaluate some of the central plot elements of the game. It naturally contains unmarked spoilers.

Why are they seen as inherently more wonderful and trustworthy?
X wants to be with them while x sees them as less threatening, creating an overarching halo effect, even in the midst of the most heinous crimes, they’ll be given preference.

That thing about King
There’s more than one way to be a victim of circumstance
Hilarious and lovable as King is, if you look at him dispassionately, he is a mediocre white man propelled to his situation on account of his looks. The story makes no bones about it: he’s been in the right place enough times and looks the part.
Tumblr media
Now nice enough but hapless guy (almost always white) who just so happens to bumble along into serious situations and come out well is irritatingly common as a trope in fiction and get very annoying, especially when the author isn’t self-aware enough to realise that’s what they’re writing. Doubly so when the people actually doing the heavy lifting don’t get the credit because they dont look the part. Triply so when they’re POCs… like Saitama.
Tumblr media
What makes King someone we don’t hate for all that is first, who he is, and second, the seriousness of his situation.
Who he is. King does not delude himself for a moment that he somehow deserves his position. He knows his favour is unearned and while he hasn’t minded the money, he’s always aware that it could be asked for any day. He isn’t a horrible person being portrayed as a nice guy, as happens in many other stories. He genuinely is a nice person. The fact that he does not delude himself into thinking that he has luck powers and is truly terrified for his life at all times is absolutely key to his continued survival. If he were less afraid, his heart beat less loudly, he quivered less so that monsters and people alike don’t misintepret it as suppressed blood lust, the spell would break and he’d just be an ordinary scared guy.
Tumblr media
Second, the situation. If he’s found out, what’s at stake for him isn’t embarrassment. It’s death, a very nasty death that you would not wish on your worst enemy, let alone someone as humble and as pleasant as this guy. So a guy whom we should absolutely hate, we root for, to somehow get out of this terrible situation. At least for now.
It’s been a good thing to see King decide that if he’s stuck being misunderstood, he may as well find ways to use that misunderstanding positively, but the situation isn’t going to be tenable long-term. You only have to run out of luck once to have it all come falling down in the worst way.
Tumblr media
So the question is whether King finds a way to bow out of being seen as a hero gracefully, or if he steps up and becomes as strong as people imagine he is.
Saitama’s essential question is still valid.
