I am curious, what is it that you like about Jamil and Kalim and the ship itself? It is popular ship and I want to hear your opinion.
I'm going to be honest and admit it's the angst potential. It's a very recurring theme on my favorites ships (AGSZC, Soriku, BingQiu, NieYao, Dark Spiritshipping...(Wow I'm fishing into some old hyper fixation here, the nostalgia!))
I am extremely aware of how dysfunctional and problematic their relationship is. What allows me to ship it though, is that both of them (after Book 4) are also aware of this and are trying to fix it. Well, Kalim is trying to fix it and Jamil is giving him a chance because a) its his only hope to save his social life in NRC and b) he recognized that he couldn't push all the blame on Kalim.
In chapter 38 I mentioned the definition of tragedy (greek tragedy as explained to me in college to be precise). The root of tragedies is found in the individuals caught up in it rather than the external forces. Jamil's Overblot didn't have to happen, however because Kalim was so oblivious and unwilling to acknowledge anything negative in his life and because Jamil enabled Kalim's reliance on him and never spoke his mind to him it was doomed to happen. If one had been less naive or the other more honest there wouldn't have been a book 4. They are both as guilty and are both dealing with internal struggles (Toxic positivity for Kalim and Inferiority complex for Jamil).
Add to this their master/servant relationship and the influence of what had been shown of a society with huge class issues and boom! Angst! However since they're both very endearing you want them to work things out! I kinda hope that once grown up and after their work out their issues they can have a relationship a bit like Uncle Scrooge and Goldie. Obviously I don't mean the part with the flirting by double crossing but more the part where they both do their thing and once in a while they end up on a crazy adventure together.
So yeah, that's mostly my take on it. I don't think it's very deep, maybe I'll explore some aspects in more details in the future. I'm actually thinking of making a post to compare Kalim's and Tohru's (Fruit Basket) toxic positivity to illustrate it better. Seriously those two really need to talk to someone about this.
