So if WWX calls LWJ Wangji-Xiong sometime, why does he use Lan-er-gege as well? Don't they both kind of mean the same thing? Although I was getting the impression the latter was more flirty?

Yes you are absolutely correct! Gege (哥哥)and xiong (兄) technically have the same meaning of ‘brother’ but gege is often used in a flirtatious manner by those talking to their crush or when they are teasing.

Hi! I've been reading up on some of your informative posts and wanted to ask: I know that you said shào yé and gongzi can be used in similar circumstances. Can I ask: are they totally interchangeable or is there context for when one is more appropriate than another? Thank you!
Hello! I find that they are very similar in meaning but as you move toward more recent times - say the 1900s - you see less of the use of gongzi (公子). Shaoye (少爷)is now more commonly used as a term to refer to the son of a family.
