Miles Morales and promises
I'm pretty sure Miles was raised being taught that promises are a big, serious deal, based on the way he and his parents act about them. It's subtle but it's very, very consistent, so I went through and screenshotted all the times I could find about it.
1. Miles's promise to RIPeter in ITSV
First of all he hesitates before making the promise--he's taking the promise really, really seriously. Obviously it's a serious situation, but I also think the wording itself--promise--carries a lot of weight for Miles.
And then Miles references this moment throughout the film as his driving motivation for becoming Spider-Man.
It's specifically "I made a promise," not "no one else can do this" or "he asked me to do this," or any other way of framing the situation. It is a promise, and Miles keeps emphasizing that.
(sidenote: for itsv, I could've also added the bit where Jeff says "you made a commitment to that school," because I think it carries very similar values--that when you commit you commit--but since it's not specifically about promises I left it out.)
(second sidenote: in the scene where Peter B. is telling Miles that they're leaving Miles behind and Peter is going to shut off the collider, Miles says, "But I'm ready, I promise," which I could've added, but wasn't sure if it counted as Miles being serious about promises enough--it kind of reads like Miles is breaking down a bit and just trying to say whatever will convince Peter. Assuming Miles was being serious, it adds an extra layer to his resentment and anger in this scene.)
2. Miles' promise to his mom in ATSV
You already know this one and you already remember this one. It feels significant because it feels like pretty solid evidence that this "taking promises seriously" thing is something his parents taught him. Rio is very, very insistent that Miles promises, not just agrees.
3. This one
Idk what to call it, but it's the scene where Miles is talking to Rio-42, about to reveal that he's Spider-man. He's really insistent that she promises nothing will change between them after he reveals his secret--which she doesn't do, by the way. She responds first with "Pap谩, I will always love you," then when he insists again, she says, "Always!"
Maybe should've been a hint to Miles that he was in the wrong dimension? I don't know.
Anyway, I just made this post because it's something I haven't seen people do much with, and I think it's a cool detail to apply to the Morales family dynamics, as well as Miles' dynamics with everyone else around him.

also so that all of my recent posts aren't just me complaining. miles and gwen and art: I think a lot about how important this is to their dynamic, although it's really subtle in the Movies Proper. Miles and Gwen are both artists: Gwen as a punk-rock musician and a dancer, Miles with his graffiti and studio art. And I think it's probably really important to both of them that they can connect on the level of having an artist mindset.
by "mindset" I mean--it seems like they really live life by their art, and base their lifestyle around it to a certain extent--not because they feel forced to, but because that artistic expression is the most life-giving and fulfilling form of expression that they know (maybe other than their spider work). Gwen isn't just a drummer and a dancer. There are a lot of hints that she's genuinely "punk--" although she isn't the most radical character in the franchise--but it's clear that she's engaging intentionally with a certain ideology and lifestyle, I mean. (And she doesn't need to have everything figured out and be the perfect radical punk, she's a teenager.)
and for Miles, like Gwen, there are a lot of hints... that I don't even really want to call hints because they're obvious and everywhere... that he's engaged with this expressive subculture (or I've seen some people call it hip-hop culture. either one works I think). He doesn't just "do graffiti," but engages with the music, fashion, and ideas that go along with it--ideas about freedom, individuality, self-expression, etc.
They're different subcultures, but I think they have a lot of similarities that Miles and Gwen can probably bond over--the very intentional self-expression, ideas of both independence/individuality and community support, and most to the point of this post, the ideas about art. I really really think they're on the same wavelength and I wish the movies would explore this more--I feel like it could add a lot of context to "we're the same... in the important ways."

at the end of dune 2, paul extends his hand to the emperor, and the emperor doesn鈥檛 take it right away, and paul stomps his foot. it鈥檚 authoritative, but childish. it鈥檚 the perfect encapsulation of who paul is in that moment. his na茂vet茅 and his grandiosity all tied into one. brilliant

The visual of the Harkonnen/Sardaukar bodies being burned in piles at the end of the film not only function as a mirror to the beginning (where House Atreides suffered that fate) to demonstrate how monstrous Paul had become, but it also showed how much he had dragged the Fremen with him in that they were cremating instead of reclaiming the water of their enemies (even if Harkonnen water isn't exactly potable).
