I think the nail in the coffin of XueXiao being SO utterly heartbreaking to me is just how obviously and instantly compatible they actually are when no outside factors are allowed to interfere. Xiao Xingchen can’t keep a straight face around him, Xue Yang can’t stop telling jokes to make him laugh, they’re GENUINELY just SO happy together when the rest of the world is at arm’s length. Xue Yang stopped his own revenge plot because he was just SO content living in domestic bliss. Xiao Xingchen stopped traveling to settle down. If they’d met in any context that allowed them to not be antagonistic to each other, they’d have instantly become inseparable friends. They’re so obviously and easily important to each other and it’s for no other reason than literally just LIKING each other SO MUCH. 

It’s such a tragedy of “right person, wrong timing”, because by the time they really met, it was already too late for them to see eye to eye, and the only reason they end up being ABLE to is because they have this false clean slate. But WITH a clean slate (even a false one) they get along SO well and SO easily that the impossibility of that lasting is absolutely gut wrenching.
