I like to view Cardin as the standard for Huntsmen and Huntresses. Capable on his own, better with group action, but as soon as outside forces engage he's out of his element and is most likely unable to respond accordingly and is taken out. We see this again and again with other hunters throughout the series. Hunters who are equipped for regular anti Grimm action but unable to meet new challenges.
But the main difference between Jaune and regular non RWBY hunters is that he's able to survive and adapt past the initial breaking point. All of the hunters in remnant, when faced with outside forces outside of their training or control, don't have the Aura or teammates to cover and thus are easily taken out while Jaune learns, adapts and grows stronger.

Turns out the 12 regeneration thing is actually a cultural aspect of the Time Lords that was created as a way to keep their young from doing super deadly stuff. "You only have thirteen regeneration Tim you better not do anything stupid like wasting them trying to swim through maple syrup."
This only becomes an issue when you have a bunch of time lord children who grew up with no knowledge of the regeneration cultural limit like Jaune who has died fourteen times before he was ten.

Well the thing about Doctor Jaune, is that he’s not actually the Doctor
Thank you for giving me an excuse to talk about this stupid AU I thought up on the back of a napkin
So Jaune is a Time Lord, but he’s not the Doctor. In fact, he’s significantly younger than the Doctor, since he was a baby during the Time War
In this, a number of Gallifreyan infants were sent from the planet to ensure that the species/culture would survive if the worst should happen. Jaune is one of those infants, and he crashed on Remnant in the Arcs backyard
So he’s not a traditional Time Lord in any sense
He can still regenerate (and he does several times, god bless him he tries), but he’s not a genius like the Doctor or Master, he’s not particularly skilled in diplomacy or warfare or anything like that. He’s just a kid with the weight of a slightly different legacy on his shoulders
So yes, Pyrrha is his companion, but only because she’s his partner at Beacon when he’s on his sixth regeneration. He doesn’t have “companions” in the traditional sense cause he’s not journeying any more than he does in canon
Of course, being able to die multiple times without REALLY dying (just a personality change) doesn’t do anything to help his self-sacrificial tendencies

Even funnier when you remember that Jaune might be from a farming village so all them farmer/animal colloquialism can be interpreted as faunas racial slurs.
Jaune: *Sees the mess Neon left in the dorm room* "What were you raised in a-" *Narrows his eyes*
Neon, with a shit eating grin: "Go on... say it."
I don't see May as the type to drop slurs at all, but I absolutely see her as the type of girl to rage at her team or the enemy players as a way to blow off steam after keeping her emotions suppressed all day.
I also see Neon as the type of faunus who would try to bait her friends in to dropping faunus slurs so she could make fun of them by pretending to be offended and laughing at their mortification.
Neon ever the trouble maker.

Only issue is that it makes Jaune out to be the villain where we all know he'd be the redemption of them both. Jaune would be the one to cast out the serpent who caused them to corrupt their paradise (Cinder or Salem using Faunas as foot soldiers in this context) and bring about the serpent's end via the heel of Eve and Adam's bloodline later on.

preston garvey is such an og bro, and yes for all the reasons you're thinking of but also because like, he literally led a whole group of people from Quincy to Jamaica Plain!! AND THEN ACROSS THE CHARLES RIVER TO LEXINGTON AND THEEN EVEN FURTHER UP NORTH TO CONCORD.
he was watching out for this group of people who had just been run out of their homes. he stayed with these refugees throughout every disastrous place they thought they'd be safe, every death, and just all that grieving; all while struggling with his own sense of purpose ("Everything I believed in had turned out to be a lie.") and feelings of being a failure, that led him to thinking he'd be better off dead :( plus, these people from Quincy were strangers to him at first. he didn't have to do all that, yet he took it upon himself to do so. because he's just built that way. he's too good for the damn wasteland. </3
and like even after all of that, he doesn't hang the Minuteman hat up. he keeps on going, pushing the boulder up the hill in hope of making the Commonwealth a better and safer place.
