acftl review (finally)
I give it a 3 āļø (as much as it pains me) even then itās only this high bc I love evajacks so much
so I was finally able to gather my thoughts into one post and while there were many things I enjoyed a few others didnāt sit right..
1. the whole story curse thing.. it makes sense that the story curse would twist things which is why some things were left unexplained but it doesnāt feel like it was done deliberately?? it just felt like stephanie genuinely didnāt know how to tie some things together.. like sure not every single thing needs an explanation but she emphasised certain things wayyy too much in the first two books for them to be completely ignored for example evajacks talking to each other in their minds. Even the broken heart scar wasnāt addressed again after like halfway through acftl
2. too much apollo.. sorry this is not even just me being biased or whatever like I do agree his pov helped explain the plot from a different perspective but he got wayyy more of a backstory and a conclusion to his character than jacks for a someone that wasnāt as present in the last 2 books.. and this was supposed to be jacksā series kinda (ik it was evangelines too) but I feel like jacks got sidelined hard and thatās disappointing. It also didnāt help that whenever there was an intense scene between evajacks the pov would switch to apollo.. to be fair I think having 3 povs was just hard to execute in general
3. the kiss scene.. usually it would not be a big deal but itās a big part of jacks character that he canāt kiss girls without killing them idk I thought him finally getting to kiss evangeline would be a lot moreā¦ grand? they barely got a page or any detail and then the next chapter was āonce upon a time there was kissing and more kissing š„°š„°ā which was even more underwhelming. Even apollo and evangelines kiss scenes were longer and more detailed and they got multiple
4. the overall vibe of the 3rd book felt very different to the first two I couldnāt put my finger on it at first but I feel like it had something to do with the writing.. at some parts it felt familiar (like all the descriptions and the fairytale aspects) but others it just felt different?
5. during too many scenes it just felt like stephanie was rewriting tbona.. like I havenāt really seen anyone say this yet but a good chunk of the book was quotes from tbona which I feel took up a lot of unnecessary space and couldāve been used to develop other plots or characters? Literally someone that hasnāt read tbona could get a gist of what happened cause itās all summarised in there š
6. the plot in general.. contrary to popular belief I donāt think this was that romance focused (as people claim as to why things werenāt explained) because I think stephanie incorporated more plot in here but it was just different to what we saw in the last books because previous characters (luc, marisol, tiberius, kristof) werenāt as present in this book and new characters plots and explanations were just thrown in.. not much felt connected
7. jacksā backstory.. (going back to my second point) how he became a fate was really glossed over I feel and was only briefly mentioned but I just wanted more.. I do like the fact that he said he did it for chaos and I wish their friendship was delved into more because he literally turned to immortality because his friend would be alone. What about his parents? His friendship with Lyric? The merrywood three in general? His life when he was trapped in the card?
8. the first fox.. again wayy too significant to be missed out especially since jacks doesnāt really remember whether or not he had a thing for her and chaos said evangeline was similar to her.. how was there no link?
I definitely have more to add but for now my main takeaway is that while tbona was very hard to top I feel like acftl couldāve been so much more especially since it was set up so well.. I think so many people are disappointed because it doesnāt hold up as well for the last book in a series but Iām just glad evajacks got their happy ending š«

really curious about stephanies original draft for the ouabh series
from what I hear:
- jacks wouldāve been drugged by julian and taken away
- to get him back evangeline wouldāve had to make a deal with chaos
- chaos said if he helps her then he gets to bite her
- evangeline was supposed to be a spy hired by scarlett and sent to the north to kill jacks
- the love triangle was supposed to be between chaos, eva and jacks
- as for acftl stephanies editor told her it was too dark for a YA book so she rewrote a big chunk of it (mostly the ending)
- jacks wasnāt gonna have a pov at all it was meant to be just eva and apollo (thank god bc imagine no jacks at all??)

I also wanted to add that the people saying jacks wasnāt himself were the same ones who claim his confession wasnāt enough.. heās always been an actions over words guy and I can definitely say the whole book was his confession. The grand gestures he does from going back in time to save evas life in tbona to taking out his heart in exchange for a cuff thatāll always protect her even from himself is a huge way of proving he loves her (on top of the many times heās saved her life). Evaās confession was also beautiful it made sense that it was longer and more heartfelt because sheās more of a words type of person and jacks needed to hear it that someone loved him.. eva already knows jacks loved her. Iād even go on to say that a longer confession from jacks wouldāve been more ooc but again thatās just my opinion I enjoy reading everyoneās thoughts on acftl š«¶š½

letās revisit so:
- jacks had evangeline bent over a bridge and dangling within an inch of her life
- threw clothes at her face while giving her instructions IN HER OWN ROOM
- knocked aurora out because she wouldnāt give him his heart back when he asked
- threatens and kills the assassin who tried to kill evangeline
- beats apollo to the point he seems half dead
- had a 2 v 1 sparring with the valor brothers because they didnāt have evangelines best interest at heart (this was funny bc he didnāt even care that he was losing)
- stabbed chaos for talking to evangeline (his bff of many years btw)
- gave evangeline a dead fox as a warning not to look for him with a letter that said āa little fox for my little foxā (isnāt he soo dreamy š)

acftl spoilers (I think)
I can tell people wanted a legendary jacks comeback with all these ājacks was oocā ājacks was not himself in acftlā allegations.. sometimes you have to look at the context of the book. In legendary he had no proper love interest and nothing to lose really so ofc he was going around being a menace.. after tbona the love of his life literally died in his arms and forgot him it would be odd if he DID remain the exact same donāt you think? He didnāt even change that dramatically he was still his sassy self just more vulnerable and allowed himself to feel more (ahem I believe this is called character development)
anyways acftl had its problems but jacks being ooc was def not one of them in my honest opinion š¤

one thing I will say is I donāt like how hard stephanie is pushing the love triangle.. I knew it was gonna be there but sheās making it look like apollo has a chance (we know he doesnāt) but oh well.. he barely did anything in the past 2 books and the thirds focus is all on him idk š

So these are just notes and random things I wrote down from Stephanie Garber's London tour:
ā Her favourite character used to be Jacks but now it's Apollo *gasp from the audience*
ā She wrote Finale chapter 16 ( the one where it mentioned that a wedding party was turned to stone and the bride's sister took their place) before she wrote Once Upon A Broken Heart, which actually contradicts what everyone believes- that she wrote chapter 16 to set up ouabh.
ā In the first draft of ouabh, Evangeline was a spy sent from Valenda to the North to kill Jacks.
ā She's written her next book (secret project #7) and it's probably going to be announced around a month after acftl is released.
ā When asked if Chaos, Lala and the Valors are going to return she said yes and that there is going to be a Chaos/Lala scene (a scene where Evangeline is like "hey I'm still here guys") (Stephanie's words)
ā She said she also has a Chaos/Lala story in her head but I think there was something about Secret project #7 having nothing to do with the ouabh/caraval universe but don't quote me on that.
ā Jacks was hard to write in acftl
ā Also mentioned that Legend was easy to write until Finale
ā When asked about alternate endings she said she:
> she doesn't like writing bonus material
> she feels like she puts everything she wants to in the book
> they are not canon
> there is one light ending, one dark ending and one that's in the middle (out of all the bonus epilogues/alternate endings)
> she prefers the dark ending and doesn't really like the light ending
ā There actually is something about Jacks liking apples and sometimes the colours were intentional
