i'm actually so serious when i say that it is DEATHLY important to let fourteen year olds have bad takes on the internet. there's been this trend over the last few years to just piss all over anything kids say on the internet that doesn't live up to the experience and opinions of a fully grown adult. like of course actual children aren't going to have an understanding of the world filled with nuance and critical thinking. of course they're going to have bad takes and miss subtexts and get things wrong because they likely just don't have the experience or the brain development to do so yet. and before anyone says "so they should wait until their brains are developed enough/they have that experience" my guy, where do you think that comes from? media literacy doesn't form in a vacuum; it has to be grown and nurtured, and it will often start as a pile of shit. but piling toxins into the dirt isn't going to allow the flowers to grow, it's just going to make some grotesque mutation, or worse, kill the plant altogether. maybe this metaphor has got a bit elaborate, but tl;dr, bad takes and underdeveloped opinions are vital as a part of both the internet ecosystem and to our personal growth. don't be arsey to kids just because they're wrong or immature. that's literally what being a kid is about. either nicely correct them/disagree or wait for them to do it on their own. we were all there once, give them a chance.
