Five Questions for Famous Downtowners
November is Downtown Las Vegas Month, and what better way to celebrate #DTLV than to hear from some of its most famous denizens?
Zappos CEO and New York Times best-selling author Tony Hsieh has had a profound impact on the area as head of the Downtown Project, a group dedicated to the transformation and revitalization of downtown Las Vegas.
Hsieh is a soft-spoken, unassuming guy that you might bump into at a downtown hot spot without even realizing it. His down-to-earth reputation belies his outsized influence in the local community.
We caught up to the always on the move Hsieh for a quick Q and A.
What is your favorite thing about Downtown Las Vegas?
The energy, the vibe, the mixture of entrepreneurial spirit and creativity, the sense that anything is possible, and the speed at which things move.
What is your favorite piece of Downtown Las Vegas history?
Atomic Liquors - Vegas’ oldest freestanding bar - people used to stand on the roof to watch the atomic explosions.
I guess people had to do something for entertainment back before the internet.
Where are we most likely to find you downtown?
Walking around Fremont East.
I notice you didn’t say “hanging around Fremont East”. We did mention you were always on the move.
What is your favorite neon sign downtown?
Atomic Liquors.
It makes sense that your favorite sign resides on your favorite piece of downtown history.
So, what do you think downtown will be like 20 years from now?
Hard to predict, but hopefully it will become one of the most desirable places to live in the country!
