today’s obsession is ancient tattoos, in particular the s-curved floral-antlered deer of the Siberian Ice Maiden and Scythian Chieftain.
it’s such a heavily used trope in modern media (off the top of my head I can think of Pokemon, Annihilation, Bambi, Snow White and the Huntsman, etc) and why wouldn’t it be! antlers look like branches, branches look like antlers, it’s only natural to pair them
but it makes me strangely emotional that our brains have always worked this way, and been drawn to the same imagery over and over again.
I’m also going to resist the urge to make paired enamel pins of these ancient deer, even though I deeply desire little wearable tributes of the past
the baby is so cute, because he’s SO HAPPY TO SEE YOU! he purrs so loud, and wags his tail like a dog, and it’s not enough for him to weave between your feet, he wants to be picked up and held against you chest. and then he doesn’t entirely understand kisses yet, so when you smooch his bald scalp he thinks his play time, and will gently reach up and clamp his baby teeth around your chin. he is such a good boy!!!!!!!
Sorry if this has been asked before, but if someone wanted to get into bugkeeping, would there be any particular kind of bug you would recommend for someone who's new to it?
I get asked this a lot and I have no answer unless the question gets more specific. ex. some tarantulas are very easy, and some isopods are too, but they have totally different care needs, come with different challenges, and are enjoyed in very different ways. that’s why I’ll have to ask you: what are you looking for in a bug pet? a single predator or a colony of detritivores? something that you’ll see or are you fine with pet dirt? what experience do you have with terrarium animals in general and what are you willing to do to care for the bugs?
i try to take breaks and enjoy the afternoon sun on my porch when the weather's nice so i started setting my slack status to a lizard to let people know i'm basking for a bit and something to the effect of this graphic plays in the back of my head every time i see that little lizard icon
It's so funny to me that it's possible to have verbal misunderstandings with animals.
This morning I made Ripley (a parrot) a foraging toy, as I often do before I leave for work, by putting a bunch of paper shreds in an old tea box with some peanuts and dried cherries. He hadn't touched it by the time I came home so when he was wandering around the living room restlessly looking for something to do I picked up the box and told him "hey, there's a peanut in here. You can get it out" and then I went back to my office.
After a couple minutes, he walked through the kitchen to where I was sitting at my desk and looked up at me and whispered "I get peanut?"
I said, "Buddy. I think you misunderstood me. The peanut is still in the box."
He tapped his beak on the floor, said "oh" in a really disappointed tone, and then helpfully suggested, "I step up get a peanut?"
