Still getting over-emotional at the commentary during the Valley Exodus and how they just off-handedly mention how that’s literally the last sunset the Onceler ever sees again. I mean it’s cool how a lot of fanart and fanfiction nailed that fact, but there’s no way for the viewer to know otherwise and I think that’s a really powerful statement that really settles the finality of the Onceler’s mistakes and the effects he’s caused to the environment

because it’s not enough that he lost his family and whatever shred of actual friendship he had with the Lorax and animals

or that he lost all his wealth and everything he worked for trying to change for the greater good

but that is the last time he ever sees the sky and sun and stars again, and he never gets to appreciate those last moments as he literally watches his life fall apart

In spite of his decisions, I think the punishment is harsher than he ever deserved. It kinda paints a more realistic contrast to other movies where the main character more or less get their happy ending, because that is not the case for the Onceler. Faithful to the source material, he was destined to fall and never really fully recover

A lot of people outside of the fandom groan and complain about how Oncelings obsess over a character who they think is just eye candy to them (the whole movie is eye candy, thank you very much), but when it really comes down to it, the Onceler is a really tragic character. and I admit, I’m a sap for those kind of people

here’s a little WIP 🥰 I wanted to do some truffula studies, and since I’m a bit better with realism rather than cartoon style, I figured why wouldn’t I draw one of these babies ?

Oh my god, I just realised.

I realised the design reason for Once-ler’s original outfit.

He wears white and grey (blue-ish grey, but it’s not really that blue), and even his hair is black. He’s near monochrome except for his gloves, which stand out incredibly bright on his white-grey-black palette. But it’s not just to give his gloves visual attention-

I think he was designed that way because the truffula forest is so colourful, the best way to make him stand out against it was to be devoid of colour. Nearly all of his character establishment happens in a sea of bright blue, green, pink and yellow and orange. The valley pushes colours over the top, so the only contrast is for him to be stark bare white, black, and a bit inbetween.

And when the valley’s barren, he switches to his flashy emerald and gold suit. Now he’s over the top. The distinction of vibrancy meant he wasn’t allowed to wear those colours until he bled them out of nature first.

There was only room enough for one vivid, brilliant swatch of green in this movie and he ripped it off the backgrounds to drape over his own shoulders. He absorbed the colour right out of everything else - through his hands, the part that signifies his actions, covered in green right from the start and showing his intent from the beginning.

Hi Anon! I know by sharing my art that I potentially put myself out there to be judged or ridiculed. I'm not angry, hurt, or sad and prepared myself for this. I feel like many people who do self ship have to prepare themselves for it especially connecting the self ship to their main blog like I have. A part of me having this confidence is from the love and support I get from my friends and those I met through the fandom. That support really outweighs your comment in many ways. It also outweighs silent judgement and any little passing comment I may get. I am super thankful for those people and having that support! I'm Aromantic and Asexual. Self shipping to me is just for fun and how I feel for this character is something I don't feel for real people. I know he isn't real and am actually really happy about that, I can do things on my own terms and have fun! It's like someone writing a fantasy story, its not something they would ever do/can't do but still dedicate time and effort into making something amazing. What I do makes me happy, and you don't need to explain your happiness to anyone. Life is short so enjoy it even if someone thinks its "cringe" or weird. Have a great day! <3
