I was here in the before times, I was a gingerhaze fan for broship of the rings, read Nimona as it came out in episodes here on tumblr, bought several copies of the graphic novel etc. so I consider myself a hardcore fan.

We had a watch party when the Nimona movie came out, and IT'S FUCKING GREAT, we have watched it every day since and intend to keep up the streak as long as possible.

Anyway you should watch it and when you do, look out for the easter egg of the original style Nimona which appears near the end, when I saw it I was like "MY NIMONA!" which immediately became set to the tune of 'My Sharona' in my head.

I have chronic inability to decide, so two alternative versions. I basically threw a bucket of colors for the second one 😭 kinda fun:

Nimona is absolutely wonderful and great. Go watch it. It's a great allegory for being trans and the characters are so good.

Also, something I haven't seen many people mention is how Nimona talks about how shape-shifting for her is necessary or else she starts feeling uncomfortable. This is EXACTLY how it feels for me to have tics. It's like when you have to sneeze. Yes, it's a trams allegory, but geez, it also reminds me a lot of people saying "stop doing that why can't you be normal you're making a scene" about tics/tourettes. There's a lot of subtle disability stuff in there that I'm very happy about. A+ 10/10 would recommend. Especially during disability pride.

yes!! and i feel like that’s such a part of nimona’s journey in the movie too, we see her straddle the line between wanting and needing to be unapologetically herself but also desperately needing a friend and love and approval. you can see it when she breathes fire at the board game on an impulse in the heat of competition and then sits on edge waiting for ballister to accept her because he had said that breathing fire was the mark of a monster.

over time, nimona sheds this skin as she becomes the monster and manifests the creature she’s been made into in her isolation and anger and grief but i definitely agree with the reading that her pink forms, tied to the pink haired punk rock teen vibe, are supposed to lighten the transformation, make it seem less intimidating, more pastel and childish and fun. i also remember nd stevenson answering an ask about the purple hair a long time ago and him saying that the purple hair was supposed to clash with the color matching ballister and nimona had previously had and show the fracturing of their dynamic so that’s another hit.

there’s so many details in both stories to dive into and so much care put into both worlds, no matter which one you prefer. and in a way, nimona’s “monster” form is kind of the entire opposite of her friendly yet bloodthirsty pink forms, showing us her as something entirely different and unveiling the centuries of pain she has been holding.

anyway hope you don’t mind that i hopped on your post i just really enjoyed it and there’s just so much good potential for nimona meta!

okay now that nimona is trending can we talk about my favorite detail in the book. nimona is shown all throughout the first third or so to be able to transform into anything, but everything she is is the same pink color, right? but then, after she and ballister have had an argument she waltzes into the lair with purple hair. and it freaks him out a bit and she dismisses it with a quick 'yeah i like purple too' but god realizing that she doesn't have the limits that everyone, even the audience, believed that she did? amazing foreshadowing i love it so much

my favorite thing about nimona is that they didn't give her a backstory to why she was a shapeshifter. just that she was. it was her normal reality that she had lived for over a thousand years. that despite doing nothing wrong she was labeled as a monster from the beginning of time. the entire kingdom was only built to protect the world from her just wanting to exist free to be whatever she wanted.

this movie isn't even a trans allegory at this point, it is The transgender movie.

i love the way that every time ballister asks what nimona is, she just says "i'm nimona" like, she doesn't have to explain herself to anyone 🥲

nimona thoughts that i havent seen ppl mention yet:

the book struggles more with the idea that nimona doesn’t have a neutral, not shapeshifting form, that maybe it’s the “monster” and not the quirky bloodthirsty sidekick she presents to ballister. the movie seems to imply her original form might be this wind nimona starts as in the flashback as she moves through different forms. i see people talking a lot about nimona as a girl, and i think she is when she wants to be and maybe this all is to say that trans shapeshifters rights means we stop asking questions or caring quite so much about an original form (“small minded questions”) but it’s fascinating and i love how the movie handled it.

also, i love that in fantasy movies so often the monster is an ancient evil that can’t really die, just get trapped or blocked out momentarily (cracks in the walls) or seperated for a time. but if nimona is the monster, isn’t that actually beautiful? nimona is always coming back, regenerating, just like, well, the queer and trans communities she’s meant to represent. we’re always going to be indestructible, even when we’re under attack.
