“kudos, man. reading a physical copy of a book is totally commendable in a society where everyone owns a fucking kindle.. or whatever. sadly, i think nature went ahead and reset my brain back to its primitive stages. so reading? critical thinking? i don’t know them.” a pause. “what’re you reading anyway? it’s not one of those neoclassical books all the preppy philosophy kids are ranting about, right?”
“it sounds stupid but i couldn’t imagine having something like a kindle. it’d feel too foreign to me.” matias didn’t come from a house with that many luxuries but he was more than happy with everything he did have. “a biography about malcolm x. it’s one of those things that i know a lot about his fight and cause but not about the actual man behind the movement. so to answer the question, not a neoclassical book.”

“you could have worse hobbies, that’s for sure. and the ship’s library surprisingly has a huge selection.” luna had checked it out quite a few times herself and always found the book she was looking for. “do you have a favorite genre?”
“oh yeah. plenty of worse habits that i could be picking up.” matias chuckled in saying this. “i’ve not actually been the library but i’m starting to hear some pretty good things about it. i might have to check it out once i finish this book.” he patted his book in his lap upon referencing it. “biographies - maybe i’m just nosy but real people just seem more appealing to me.”

“I read so much as a kid… I just dropped it in high school - I guess I thought I was too busy. All that to say that you’re right - it’s a great excuse. Have you read anything good lately?”
“i think that’s pretty common. you do so much reading for school work that it becomes a chore to read for fun. at least that’s what makes sense to me.” matias considered what the other was saying. “i’m working through this biography about malcolm x. it’s pretty good actually.”

“Well.. to be honest, I didn’t read before I got on the shipt and I still don’t read now. Seriously, have you ever seen me with a book that wasn’t for one of our boring assignments?”
“i don’t blame you for a second. it’s not the most exciting activity out there but if i want to sun bathe, i need to feel like i’m doing something too or i feel lazy.” matias confessed.

“i totally get that,” river nodded. “i’ve been trying to get more into reading again. i feel like i always did it with no effort when i was younger. if i could get off my phone so much, maybe i can be consistent with it again.”
“have you got anything you prefer reading in general? any genres you’ve found?” matias asked his roommate. “phones are definitely more interesting sometimes, it’s so mcuh easier and you barely have to focus on what you’re reading.”

“ i’ve managed to read all the manga volumes i brought with me for the entire semester in only two weeks, and now i have to ask myself, what am i going to do now? do you know if they can do shipping to… ships? this isn’t a ship, but you know, the pun had to be added for brownie points. moving on to less awkward and cringe humor, what have you been reading? “
matias paused in thought. “i’ve not actually thought about that at all. though there must be ways to read - mangas? that’s like anime, right? - surely there’s places you can subscribe to online to read more.” mat suggested, hoping he was right on what he was saying. “i’m reading about the life of malcolm x.”

“I’m not much of a reader bar magazines. Is there anything you recommend in particular?” Keisha asked. “I’d like to get into reading again myself. It’s been a while..”
“i’m currently reading about the life of malcolm x but i know that be a little heavy sometimes. you’ve really got to be in the mindset for it.” he answered but still offering a warning, knowing it wasn’t everyone’s cup of tea.

“ any good recommendations then ? i can’t sit still long enough to read but maybe if the book was really good i could be convinced enough to try. ” he laughed, as he pulled his sunglasses down over his eyes.
“my dad sent me with this one.” he lifted his book. “a biography about malcolm x. it’s pretty interesting actually.” matias nodded as he dropped it back down on to his lap. “is there any types of books you could see yourself getting in to?”

“I really need to check out the library at some point.” Sierra spoke out loud as if she had remembered something she’d been meaning to do. “What are you reading?”
“i’ve not been in there yet but if you go, take me with you!” matias jokingly suggested. “this one my dad ot me before i went.” he lifted the book for her to see the cover. “it’s a biography about malcolm x.”

joey chuckled. “dude, i’m almost the exact opposite. i read a lot, i just don’t talk to people that often, that’s mostly what i struggle with. but now it feels kind of different now that i’m on here, you know? it took me some courage to actually do this shit, and i’m rather proud of myself for doing it!”
“i get it, mate. talking to people is pretty damn intimidating but i think it’s easier here because we all have something in common we can talk about - at least that’s how i see it.” mat considered aloud to the male. “but you should be proud of yourself. doing stuff like this? taking that leap? it’s huge!”

“do you need an excuse for reading? the serious question is–what kind of books are you wanting to read? they always start out small, but before you know it, you’re carryin’ around ‘in search of lost time’ and wondering if it’s really just a book or a whole series into one novel.”
“yeah, man. normally i’d be too busy that it’s weird not having anything to do but read.” matias told his friend. his normal life away from the ship had always been all go and no rest so now that he had time to waste, he thought it might be the best time to develop a calmer hobby. “i’m looking in to autobiographies right now.” he answered on what his preference was. “but tell me, what’s in search of lost time?”

“i feel like before i came on to this ship, i didn’t get chance to read much. sunbathing really feels like the ultimate excuse to pick this kind of thing up as a hobby.”

name: matias tyson jackson
nickname(s): matt, matty
age: 22
birthday: 2nd february
pronouns: he/him (cismale)
from: sacramento, california, usa
course: sports education
faceclaim: keith powers
+ charming, energetic, loyal, empathetic, diligent
- anxious, overthinker, self-sabotaging
favourites: 80′s music, cardio, pizza, fruit smoothies, american football, beach days
born in a poor district of sacramento
has 5 sisters - two older, three younger
biggest inspiration was his dad. his absolute hero. his dad is a fireman and growing up he was one of two black men on the fire squad - the other being his uncle
a lot of gang activity in his neighbourhood growing up and although he wasn’t a part of it, he certainly had his run ins with police throughout most of his life who assumed he was a part of that world simply because he was black and from the area. the older he got and heading in to his later teens, the police grew harsher with him and his friends.
seeing friends and himself be hurt for the colour of their skin did a lot to his mental state bringing on a lot of anxiety in social situations. parties meant police could raid them. going outside meant being accused of something. this developed in to a type of social anxiety.
for his anxiety, he does take anti-anxiety medication. this has helped and he is able to hide his thoughts much easier but he’s always on edge.
when leaving school he ended up joining the fire department which allowed a relationship between him and the police where they would not harass him simply because ‘it was a black they knew’ as they told him.
he was working at the fire department with his dad up until he won on the online lottery allowing him to join on to a course aboard the ship.
