yearly lenten reminder that people with disabilities or illnesses that would make fasting dangerous are exempt from the obligation to fast, and that includes eating disorders. restricting our eating for any reason puts people with a history of eating disorders at high risk of relapse. it can be frustrating to not be able to observe fast days in the same way as others, but we can adopt other penitential practices that are not self-injurious. this is an especially good time to devote more energy to reconciling with our neighbors and practicing the works of mercy. it also helps me to remember that simply coping with illness, including mental illness, can be considered bodily mortification. in the words of saint alphonsus liguori, who was himself disabled: "if bodily weakness renders us unable to practice corporal austerities, let us at least learn ... to embrace with joy the infirmities with which Almighty God visits us. If borne with patience, they will conduct us to perfection better than voluntary works of penance."
