This is a dog meme blog.
There's this dude on tiktok who like wrestles with his dogs or copies their mannerisms to show who's "boss" because he's allegedly tuning into their "wolf pack" instincts & he's the "alpha male" like who's going to tell him that's all been proven to be false & he's just acting like an idiot
Hot take but a lot of ‘balanced trainers’ are just alpha theory folks operating under fancy new lingo and their methods haven’t changed with new knowledge of dog behavior and cognition.
I’ve decided adding appropriate audio to doggo videos is going to be my new career. I’m sure this is a viable profession that will bring me great prosperity.
“What happens, I believe, is that the success of the training interchange tends to turn the participants into generalized conditioned reinforcers for each other. The trainer is the source of interesting, exciting, life-enhancing events for the subject, and the subject’s responses are interesting and rewarding for the trainer, so that they really do become attached. Not dependent, just attached. Comrades in the battle of life.”
He's fitting in perfectly!!! He loves the "big" dogs and he's potty training like a champ! He already knows sit, down, shake, high five, spin, twirl, and bang (play dead) we're working on stay and leave it with mixed success. He's already doubled in size and I can't believe he's growing so fast!!!
First pic is our current pack and we are adding this little guy! He’s a Pembroke welsh corgi!!!! In this picture he’s 3 weeks old and the reason we picked so young was because we asked his tail not be docked. He’s 5 weeks old now and the breeder says his personality is starting to show through! He is very playful and outgoing (which I take to mean he’s a rip roarin wild boi) yes a do feel like we’re crazy for adding a 4th but we’ve been planning for him for a year!
May he fit in well with your current crew. Updates?
In the face of this article , I am working on eliminating an incorrect marker word. Holy moly is it difficult. Judging from Sam's reaction, though, he is finding training to be far more pleasant!
An incorrect marker word sounds like it is a good idea, right? More information means they'll catch on to appropriate or desired behavior quicker if they know what isn't appropriate or desired. It actually seems to increase frustration. By eliminating an incorrect marker, you aren't losing anything because the dog knows they didn't do what was desired because there is a lack of reward and so they try again.
Imagine if you were trying to bake a cake and every time you did something wrong someone said "no". You probably would get fed up by the third time. However, making those mistakes is an important aspect of learning how to properly bake a cake. You learn what you can mess up on and what you can't (oops, used baking soda instead of baking powder. It didn't rise all the way but it's still an alright cake).
I'll be posting a video of Sam with no incorrect marker word and Sam with just to illustrate the difference. (Untrimmed and full resolution can be found here)
After about three "uh-uh"s you can see Sam's body language start to change. His ears start to flick back in annoyance. Without it, he is happy, enthusiastic, and willing. It definitely changed how I feel and he feels during training and keeps it more on a positive note!
I challenge everyone to eliminate the incorrect marker word and just see what sort of difference it makes in your dog and their behaviors. If you do, I'd absolutely love to see! I firmly believe that training should be enjoyable for everyone involved as much as possible.
