Daenerys Fighting the Dead
[beginning of rant]
I was reading some comments about this discussion regarding both Dany and Jon being both Azor Ahai/Prince that was Promise and I noticed a weird trend. Few questioned that it could be Jon because he’s so noble, selfless and doesn’t seek power for himself and of course he’s already been fighting the White Walkers. However, a lot of people doubt Dany because she is too power-hungry, selfish, and she only seeks to glorify herself and therefore doesn’t deserve to be a hero. I’m not surprised of course, this has pretty much been a good portion of the fan reaction to Dany since I started watching the show and reading the books. At first I was incredulous to the attacks but I understood later that the problem here is that Dany has asserted herself of who she is and what she wants. That she embraces her leadership and power. I have no problem with this but a lot of people seem to have a problem with it.
Regarding the heroism of these two characters, I would say that Dany’s heroism is on par with Jon’s if not more. This is a girl who bluffed her way into freeing 8,000+ Unsullied slaves, who liberated the center of slavery in the continent of Essos. She didn’t have to do this, she had no skin in the game but she remember was it was like to be bought and sold, to be powerless, trampled upon, to be at the mercy of others and chose to do something about it. She gave up on her dream to go to Westeros in order to rule Meereen, and while there were many setbacks and mistakes on her part she stuck it out until she defeated the slavers for good. Additionally, (and I think a lot of people don’t consider this) her conquering of the Dothraki is an essential part of her campaign of liberation. This isn’t discussed in the show but the Dothraki are the largest providers of slaves in Essos. As a nomadic people the roam Essos, praying on the weak and enslaving them. Her taking the Dothraki away from Essos is an additional blow to the slave trade. To me Dany is probably one of the most empathetic characters in the series. Yet because she’s not humble that somehow takes away from the good she has done and accomplished. WTF!
Additionally, I don’t think a lot of people have noticed but White Walkers are in fact slavers, but instead of enslaving people who are alive, they enslave the dead. You would think that the girl who has been fighting slavery for the better part of the series would be an essential part of the fight against the enslavement of people, be they dead or alive. Come on now!
As Tyrion Lannister once told Young Griff, “this mother of dragons, this breaker of chains is above all a rescuer.”

Once upon a time in Westeros, there was a Targaryen Princess whose marriage helped knit the Seven Kingdoms together...
Tumblr media
The first Daenerys’ political marriage to the Dornish Prince Maron Martell had two effects:
–It sparked the Blackfyre Rebellion.
–(more importantly) Along with her brother King Daeron’s marriage to Mariah Martell, it brought Dorne into the Seven Kingdoms, doing what Aegon and his sisters could not through conquest.
Daenerys and Maron were a political marriage. But he also built her the beautiful Water Gardens. She is an ancestor of the current Martells in ASOIAF.
George could have named Daenerys Targaryen for any other character in the narrative, and yet, this is what we know about the first Daenerys.
If she was going to be vicious, ruthless, he could have named her for Visenya or Rhaenyra (I love them both!).
However, she’s Daenerys. I suspect in the books, if Jonerys happens, it might really piss (f)Aegon off… paralleling what happened in the past.

Apologies for the n00b question, I haven't read the books yet. But does the Targaryen crest have a 3 headed dragon for Aegon I, Visenya and Rhaenys - the conquerors of Westeros? Or was that the Targaryen crest even before they sailed from Valyria? I ask because I like the idea of Jon, Dany and their possible offspring restoring the crest's triad theme.
Hello anon,
I’m unsure of where I read it but, I do remember reading that Aegon I had the crest of the three-headed dragon created to represent himself and his two sisters. However, there might have been something that prompted him to create this particular sigil.
We know that the Targarens have been driven by prophecy for hundreds of years. They relocated to Westeros because of a prophetic dream Daenys Targaryen had. There family does have a magical affinity which includes vision of the future, accurate, yet sometimes not properly interpret, vision of the future. So perhaps, in one of the prophecies written down by Daenys the Dreamer, there was mention of a three-headed dragon and Aegon used that to inspire the family sigil.
I lean towards the sigil being inspired by some type of prophecy or vision because it runs in line with how the Targaryens operate.

“That night she dreamt that she was Rhaegar, riding to the Trident. But she was mounted on a dragon, not a horse. When she saw the Usurper’s rebel host across the river they were armored all in ice, but she bathed them in dragonfire and they melted away like dew and turned the Trident into a torrent. Some small part of her knew that she was dreaming, but another part exulted. This is how it was meant to be. The other was a nightmare, and I have only now awakened.”
