“Hello, Henry. Nice weather we're having, isn't it?”

Henry scoffed. “It had better not be like this when The Queen visits. I don't want to be looking like this when she does.”

The big green engine glared back at his cab, upon which his driver and fireman were stretching a huge tarpaulin.

“What… are they doing?” Molly tried not to chuckle.

“They said it's to keep themselves dry. You know, because they definitely have something to complain about. We're the ones battling the elements face-first. They already have our cabs - that's the whole reason they're there!”

“Why, do you want a tarp across your front as well?”

Henry shuddered. “Absolutely not. No, the exact opposite - they already have our cabs, what more do they need?”

“What if the rain falls into your cab?”

“Well that sucks for them. We struggle through weather like this all the time, without a cab to keep us dry, and yet we're just fine.”

“Well, apparently their clothes absorb rainwater, much more so than our paintwork.”

“So they make a fuss about their uniforms, and no one bats an eye, but when I grow concerned about my freshly applied paint, suddenly it's an issue.” Henry muttered, darkly.

Expanding on my last post, here’s what all of the engines would do if given art supplies (modified for them to handle, I.e tapped to the end of a long chopstick for them to hold in their mouth)

Thomas: does a coloring book page of himself in blue, does not stay in the lines at all because lines are overrated.

Edward: takes his time to make his drawing look as nice as he could. Draws a flowery field with sheep

Henry: “okay, this is a postmodern contemporary abstract take of my forest inspired by pollock done in wax crayola crayons and… to be honest, I can’t draw at all.”

Gordon: gets frustrated, rips up the page and accidentally swallows the crayon.

James: rage quits and spits his crayon out and then runs over it.

Percy: is too busy trying to sniff the markers and crayons than actually doing any art.

Toby: has Henrietta pose with Percy while he tries to draw them.

Duck: draws the Great Western Way ™ which is try and draw a map of his line before realizing how hard that is and settling with drawing an ocean with boats.

Donald: draws dilly in pink because he thinks that’s dilly’s favorite color.

Douglas: an albino polar bear lost in a snowstorm, aka left the page blank.

Oliver: tries to draw toad, found it too hard so he scribbled it all in black and called it “toad during a blackout”

Emily: draws flowers but they came out looking like blood splatter.

Marion: has a paint brush taped to her shovel and paints rocks.

Cranky: drops buckets of paint onto a cloth

Skarloey: tries to draw the welsh dragon but with train parts, came out looking like a red blob.

Rheneas: tries to do a self portrait.

Sir Handel: is not having any of it because he thinks his art looks terrible.

Peter Sam: eats the black crayon “this coal tastes funny”

Duncan: starts out fine, messes up, rages and makes a huge mess of his drawing

Rusty: is having the time of his life.

ranking Sodor's couples (only those included in these two posts for now) by how similar their music tastes are! (most to least)

Salty/Porter, obviously. They're the only couple whose music tastes are completely unified - said unity being Irish Rovers and Blackmore's Night (kidding. it's sea shanties and folk (mostly British/Celtic/Gaelic) in general, not just those two)

Whiff/Scruff - they both enjoy noise music that makes most anyone else cover their ears. Where they differ though is that Scruff also enjoys techno while Whiff prefers rock

Emily/Caitlin - both listen to pretty basic music, although Caitlin leans more britpop while Emily doesn't care where the music is from at all. Biggest difference, though, is that Emily generally prefers solo acts and Caitlin groups.

Thomas/James - mostly this high because Thomas listens to anything. James is very into some kpop girl groups (mostly Red Velvet, but also Iz*One, Cherry Bullet, f(x) etc. - the ones that either have a red(ish) theme or referenced the colour in a well known song) and Thomas enjoys it just as much as anything else (- maybe ballads, but they're not James' style either)

Charlie/Rosie - Charlie, similarly to Thomas, will listen to pretty much anything, but the reason they're lower on the list is because Rosie's taste is basically just metal, highly stylised Japanese music (think Kyaru Pamyu Pamyu or Vocaloid) and uncanny valley-like stuff. And sorry but Charlie just can't do Poppy.

Daisy/Ryan - Daisy likes they girl pop icons like Taylor Swift, Beyoncé, Lana del Rey, Rihanna, stuff like that, and listens mostly to specific artists. Ryan doesn't care about the artists, and listens mostly to ballads, but that does give them an overlap area in the way of ballads sung by the girl icons

Edward/Henry - they're both looking for different things in music; basically, Edward's looking to dance, they like lively music and don't put much thought into the lyrics, and Henry's looking to cry (both in the sad and happy way, more looking for emotions in general), and lyrics are the first thing he's paying attention to. There is some overlap of stuff they both like, but for the most part they just compromise by either a.) each listening to their own thing or b.) playing one song each out loud and going back and forth

Luke/Victor - both of their favourites are folk music of their own culture, Celtic Irish and Latin American respectively, so similar in reasoning, vastly different in execution. Neither however minds the others music as one of the points they both love about each other is their love for their cultures, so they genuinely don't need to compromise (in the strict sense) on what they listen to together.

Douglas/Oliver - Oliver has quite a tame taste, some rock, some metal, some pop, that kinda stuff, but Douglas (along with Donald), in an act that nobody is quite sure whether it's real or just a joke gone too far, listens exclusively to bagpipes. They came to an agreement that neither plays their music out loud.

headcanons round 3! do they (steam team) have any music they wish came out earlier than it did?

Thomas - no. he enjoys listening to music, but doesn't really care that much. hell, his favourite song changes daily and he often can't remember what he was listening to just months prior, it's really not that serious.

Edward - kind of, they would have loved ABBA to start earlier, but it's, once again, not that big of a deal.

Henry - oh yeah. absolutely. more specifically "Numb Little Bug" by Em Beihold is a song he wishes he had in his youth because of how well it encapsulates the feelings he was dealing with post-tunnel incident but pre-welsh coal.

Gordon - yep. not on a personal level though, he's just convinced that if they sent Sam Ryder and "Space Man" to ESC a couple years earlier, UK would have won, and he takes it honestly too seriously.

James - once again yes! in his case it's "Red Flavor" by Red Velvet, as he maintains the song "just gets him". he has no idea what the lyrics are.

Percy - not really, no. has a surprisingly philosophical approach that all music is released when it needs to be.

Toby - no, but he does have music he wishes was never released.

Emily - is torn. On one hand, "That's My Girl" changed her brain chemistry, but on the other, does it matter when it was released?

so, turns out writing headcanons is fun, and since it doesn't need as much effort as artwork imma do it some more 😊

here we got another steam team ranking, this time who is least to most likely to have an aquatic pet (fish, turtle etc.)

but before we get to it, here are the pets they actually do have in my AU: Thomas & James - 3 dogs (2 Goldens & 1 Choco Lab); Edward & Henry - Emerald Tree Boa (snake); Gordon, Toby - none, Percy - Greek Tortoise; Emily - cat (orange)

now, for the ranking!

Gordon - (0/10) absolutely not. He doesn't want pets in general, and especially hates fish. Doesn't even acknowledge other aquatic pets, his hatred of fish is enough to dismiss the entire ecosystem.

Henry - also (0/10), but he's higher on the list than Gordon because he's not as defensive about it. As it stands, he's so used to pulling trains full of dead fish, that owning live ones would make him feel bad. Genuinely forgets that there are more aquatic options.

Thomas - (2/10) he's still traumatised by the fish that got into his boiler, he'd rather not be anywhere near fish if he can help it. Finds some turtles cute though.

Emily - (4/10) maybe if she didn't already have a cat. As it stands he loves the gremlin and will not exchange him for an aquarium.

Edward - (6/10) possibly a water snake if they didn't already have their beautiful emerald girl. What can I say, they like snakes.

Toby - (7/10) doesn't want a pet, but if he had to have one, it would be a fish.

James - (9/10) contemplated buying a couple of red bettas a while back, ultimately didn't because of Thomas. Still thinks they're incredibly beautiful. Also wouldn't mind having a red-eared slider.

Percy - (10/10) absolutely would. Spent an excessive amount of time trying to decide whether to get a turtle or a tortoise and is considering getting the turtle anyway.

ranking the Steam Team from early bird to night owl! (headcanons, ofc):

Henry, the earliest of early birds - literally. He goes to sleep and wakes up extremely early, sleeping usually from 7-8 P.M to 2-3 A.M, at which point it's considered morning for him (Gordon calls it the kipper conditioning since the train always left on an ungodly hour). It is completely natural, he does not need any alarms.

Toby, not as much an early bird as an early exiter, because he sleeps for solidly 8 hours regardless of when he goes to sleep, he just chooses to go at around 9 P.M at the latest most of the time - and as such, wakes up at like 5 A.M, with no need for alarms.

Edward, formerly known as permanently exhausted pigeon, used to go to sleep at 1-2 A.M, but changed that behaviour after moving out of the sheds because, well, they're a sucker for cuddles, and it's hard to get enough when the person you live with gets up an hour after you go to sleep. So now they go to sleep at around 9-10 P.M, although their wake up schedule remained unchanged at about 5-6 A.M. They have an alarm set, just in case, but usually won't need it.

Gordon forces himself to be an early bird, decided it would be more appropriate. As such, he goes to bed 10 P.M sharp and gets up around 6 A.M (although his alarm starts at 5.30 because he is decidedly not an early bird in nature)

Emily, still a permanently exhausted pigeon, as she is a natural (relatively) early riser, getting up at 6-7 A.M, but she also has a night owl wife, which wouldn't affect her sleep schedule if she wasn't inspired to make new, cool outfits so often because of her.. As such, she's going to bed at probably 2-3 A.M. No one understands how she can still wake up without an alarm.

Percy - just a guy, really. Goes to sleep somewhere between 10 P.M and midnight, gets up between 7 and 9 A.M. Sets an alarm if he absolutely needs to get up on the earlier side, but otherwise he's good.

Thomas, a mild night owl, goes to sleep after midnight, but no later than 2 A.M, mostly because he recognises that the world is built for early birds. Gets up at 9, maybe 10 A.M (if he can afford it) and has to rush to work anyway. Alarm clocks are his lifeline.

James, a proper night owl, goes to sleep at like 3-4 A.M, because his creativity works best at night and he also loves long showers, then gets up at 11 A.M, maybe noon, and complains about still being sleepy.... When he needs to get up earlier he will set an alarm long before the needed time to make sure he manages to get up on time, but also will not go to bed any earlier (unless the hour is like 5 A.M, then he probably goes to sleep at 1 or 2 A.M instead)

For a few seconds Edward doesn't look up, just grips his bony wrists while staring down, and Henry's heart stops. In those few seconds, the fear, as irrational as it is, that his boyfriend wouldn't want to be with him anymore, takes control. But then Edward does look up, eyes shiny with tears, and hand immediately flying to cusp his cheek, though the other one still holds him thightly. And as Henry rises his own hand to put over Edwards, all fears dissipate. Because there is no fear, or disgust in his eyes - saddness, yes, for what Henry's been through, but also relief and so, so much love. And finally, after what felt like an eternity passed, Edward whispers, choked with emotion; "I thought I'd never get to see you again. But... you're here, and... and you're real." That sentence finally broke something in Henry and he started to tear up too. ...Right before their friends reached them and tackled him into a hug. Damn his luck, they had to see him cry.

I'm back from the dead with an April 1935(36?)!2x3 piece, because idk about you but I'm ready for the spring tbh.
