Gale's book cover (more deciphering)
It occurred to me, that on my first round of "research" I somehow totally missed the cover. And now that I've got myself those beautiful clean texture shots from @mhara, I can fix that. We all know what they say about books and covers? Right?..
Tumblr media
As you can see, the book title is... no subtle at all. Even vertically mirrored (because aesthetics?), the dev's message is loud and clear. Illusion.
Still, I would not jump to any hard-lore conclusions right away. I'm having hard time considering any of this a "real in-game content". It's not irrelevant, but it's too damn close to those devnotes, which are never meant for player's eyes. It's something in-between, I guess?
The true nature and mechanics of the "astral" scene are never truly explained, but, obviously, most of it is built from rather grand and complex illusion spells (boosted by tadpole perks?). That much is clear even without extra input from devs. For all we know, the real book might not even exist. It can be some sort of an imaginary arcane device vital to establish the "astral connection", or it can be a detailed depiction of the real tome from Gale's bedside table.

Deciphering Gale's Book (page 2)
I did not have much hopes for the second page of his book. Most of the main text is truly beyond recognition, even after brightness\contrast tweaks. It's like someone had forgotten to hide their extra layer before rendering, actually😅... but those big scribbles in "Ancient Thorass"?? I think I could actually read them. And..gods, it brings up some...interesting things. See for yourselves.
Tumblr media
You can notice that T is nothing like what it looks like in the base font, but I just can't see what else can it possibly be. Real T symbol looks ugly in this font, so designer might have switched it just for the looks.. So, what do we have here? Some Latin magic, apparently.
Sapien - wisdom. proin - an dverb, something like "according to" or "hence" depending on the context. In pulvinar vox - the same thing is mirrored on the first page. It would roughly translate as "a word on the pillow/cushion". The 'word' can also possibly mean 'spell', as in 'word of power'. Now, to the bottom part. InTeger viTae placeraT... it shattered my heart into tiny pieces, and now it's your turn. In this form it means "He invests his entire life". And it might be totally random and unrelated... but I feel like it isn't... INTEGER VITAE is also happened to be a poem by Thomas Campion, which I stumbled across in attempts to revive my long-forgotten basics of Latin. I'll just...leave it here, I guess?..
The man of life upright,     Whose guiltless heart is free From all dishonest deeds,     Or thought of vanity;
The man whose silent days     In harmless joys are spent, Whom hopes cannot delude,     Nor sorrow discontent;
That man needs neither towers     Nor armour for defence, Nor secret vaults to fly     From thunder's violence:
He only can behold     With unaffrighted eyes The horrors of the deep     And terrors of the skies.
Thus, scorning all the cares     That fate or fortune brings, He makes the heaven his book,     His wisdom heavenly things;
Good thoughts his only friends,     His wealth a well-spent age, The earth his sober inn     And quiet pilgrimage.
There, you have it. I'm not sure I can untangle the background fonts, but if someone can AI-clear it up somehow, then I can give it another try (or share the fonts for the reference, I'm pretty sure that my version is very similar to the one used here).
ps: Would someone pass that to Tim, may be? Somehow, I think he's going to appreciate it. I'm not doing any of those social medias, because I'm that...asocial. 🤐
Link to page 1 for anyone, who had missed it.

I deciphered THE Page from Gale's Book!
Tumblr media
Original text is written in Thorass, which is a (sort of) DnD "old English". I recognized the font when @dailygale posted several high-res screenshots. I knew I HAD to decipher it. Want to know what's there?..
Tumblr media
Someone might find it familiar, but it's all broken, and parts are coverd by the palm layer. Here's the original for you:
The following winter brought an event no less strange than Wilbur’s first trip outside the Dunwich region. Correspondence with the Widener Library at Harvard, the Bibliothèque Nationale in Paris, the British Museum, the University of Buenos Ayres, and the Library of Miskatonic University at Arkham had failed to get him the loan of a book he desperately wanted; so at length he set out in person, shabby, dirty, bearded, and uncouth of dialect, to consult the copy at Miskatonic, which was the nearest to him geographically. (c) H. Lovecraft. The Dunwich Horror
The extra vertical bits in altered "aincient thorass" font and lower part are still unclear to me, to be honest. The lettering seems right, but I'm not getting it. A little bit disappointed that there were no secret messages to fans, who are crazy enough to read it, but the reference is...I mean, YEAH. My best wishes to the dev who chose it. Gale approves +25. I could not do much with the second page (this is the Tav's one), because it's all blurry as hell, even with sharpen filter, and it's harder to read.
ps: I blame Gale, because he made me unlurk on tumblr. Sorry if formatting is off, I have no idea how this shit is supposed to work..I hope it does work... it's my first time, but I just had to share it. :)
