Exit Through The (NPR) Gift Shop: Maddie Mortell
Tumblr media
Name: Maddie Mortell
Position: Social Media Communications Intern
Hometown & College: Marshfield, MA. Studied multimedia journalism at Emerson College in Boston.
Favorite D.C. Spot: The zoo, I was surprised it was free. It’s just a nice daytime stroll where you can see some Pandas. When the government reopened from the shut down, that was the first place I went.
Favorite NPR show, blog or podcast: Hidden Brain. Each episode leaves me challenging my beliefs and I constantly send my friends and family episodes to listen to. Throughline is also really great at recontextualizing history and leaving me to wonder why things are the way that they are.
Coolest thing you’ve done while at NPR: It’s hard to choose. I managed Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and LinkedIn for NPRExtra for 4 months so there were a lot of little highlights from that. I made these public media valentines that were dispersed everywhere; that was very light and fun.
Someone at NPR who inspires you: The 58 other interns who’ve hailed from all different parts of the country to pursue their dreams of working in public media. We made friends with each other fast, and I’m constantly impressed by their company.
Dream Tiny Desk: Lizzo
Advice for future interns: Believe in yourself. The longer you’re hung up on the “Do I belong here?” that everyone feels, the less time you have for cool ideas and projects. Imposter Syndrome even hits people who’ve worked here for decades. Every person in this building is here for a reason.

Dream Tiny Desk: Lizzo or Gabrielle Aplin
Advice for future interns: Don't eat lunch at your desk! Go make friends with the other interns, get lunch and coffee with them and make some friends. Also, take chances. Pitch the story you aren't totally sure will get picked up or write a line that might get edited out. The worst thing anyone can say to you is no, and you won't get better without accepting feedback.
