There is space for both plot readers and lore readers in the world! Sometimes I want one, sometimes the other, and I'm glad both kinds of books exist.
...Ok, I could do without Victor Hugo, if I'm being honest, but the man MAILED SOMEONE A LIVE BAT. He's basically the French Lord Byron.

Title: Thieves’ Gambit
Author: Kayvion Lewis
Rating: 3/5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️
Favourite character: Noelia
Overall this is an entertaining book with an intriguing concept and plenty of twists. A number of them were predictable but there were a few which took me by surprise.
Some of the characters were two dimensional but given the book felt a bit short this is unsurprising. I’m hoping some of them make an appearance in the second instalment of this series and we can go deeper into their backstories.
I liked how Ross’ relationship with Noelia developed throughout and I was more invested in that than the relationship with the “tall, dark and handsome” boy with a British accent.
There were a couple of pacing issues with the ending twist being very short and any action sequences being blasted through with not many consequences for the main character.
Despite this it was still an enjoyable read with a few twists that took me off guard.

Title: My Dark Vanessa
Author: Kate Elizabeth Russel
Rating: 5/5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Warnings: pedophilia, grooming, abuse
This is one of the most heartbreaking books I’ve ever read. It covers some very dark themes but handles them with delicacy in a way that gives proper insight into Vanessa’s mind and why she thinks the things she does.
One of the most saddening parts of this book is the outright denial from Vanessa that she is a victim in anyway. Thinking back once you’ve read it, you realising all of the little moments where someone could have spoken up and changed the course of the story. The ending, whilst not happy, leaves us with the beginning of Vanessa’s journey to heal herself and to accept what happened to her.
Overall, a very harrowing read but one that inspires intense emotions and because of this, it’s a five star read for me.

Title: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes
Author: Suzanne Collins
Rating: 4/5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Favourite Character: Tigris
This book is a wonderful addition to the world of Panem providing a backstory the evolution of the Hunger Games as well as an insight into Snow’s inner monologue; which is terrifying.
Snow is an extremely complex character and Collins does a great job of writing him as a villain whilst also making the reader rout for him throughout the book. Some of the most questionable thoughts of his can be easily missed but upon re-reading, they paint a picture of how truly horrific Snow’s thought process is.
Lucy Gray is a truly charming character but my favourite would have to be Tigris. It’s probably out of pity for her since the reader of already aware of her fate at the hands of her cousin. This betrayal is especially profound given how much Tigris does for Snow and how much she clearly cares for him.
The prequel sweetens Snows downfall in the later books. From his inherent hatred of mockingjays to Lucy Gray leaving him to look for Katniss, not to mention the songs Katniss sings in the later books coming back to haunt him. Collins has masterfully added to the Hunger Games universe in a way that gives good insight into a well written villain.

Title: Fourth Wing
Author: Rebecca Yarros
Rating: 3.5/5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️✨
Favourite character: Tairn
I really enjoyed reading this book; the story hooked me and the Violet’s world drew me in. The magic system and the dragons were particularly interesting and I’m looking forward to seeing how this develops in the second book of the series.
For me, the writing style wasn’t my favourite. In fantasy books I prefer a more elegant style that fits the world it’s describing. There were also many cliques involving the romance in the book. If I’m being honest, my main issues with it are the romance. It didn’t feel as believable or organic as it could have as well as being full of cheesy one liners.
That being said, I really enjoyed the platonic relationships within the story; especially Violet and Liam which lead to some beautiful scenes that made me feel a lot of emotions.
Tairn is easily my favourite character. It’s clear he’s not the same as many of the other dragons and I’m hoping we get more backstory in later books as well as a strong character arc for him.
Overall, I had a lot of fun reading this book even if there are aspects I wasn’t overly keen on; I will be reading the next one.

Title: The Night Circus
Author: Erin Morgenstern
Rating: 3.5/5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️✨
Favourite Character: Celia Bowen
This book is beautifully written with some very elegant language used through the whole novel. The characters are diverse and interesting and the magic system makes it seem like you’re seeing the world in a whole new way.
Plot is definitely not the main focus of the writing with atmosphere being the main attraction of the book. It’s an easy read for cozy days and I immensely enjoyed my time in this world.

Title: The Renegades Trilogy
Author: Marissa Meyer
Renegades: 3.5/5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️✨
Archenemies: 3/5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️
Supernova: 4/5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Favourite character: Cyanide (Leroy Flinn)
The first book very easy to read and I got through it very quickly. I enjoyed this book a lot and I found the way the prodigies got their powers was very interesting. The dialogue was very cheesy but I found this bothered me less and less throughout the trilogy and it fit in well with the style of the book. A lot of the tragic backstories and stereotypes are quite typical.
One of my issues with the first book was the lack of development of the side characters but by the end of the third book I had no issues with this.
The second book I found was a bit slow and is my least favourite. Marissa Meyer does have a bit of a habit of repeating the same phrases over and over, particularly regarding Nova’s backstory.
The third book but my favourite. Fast paced towards the end with several of my questions from the first books being answered. There were a few plot twisted that I guessed quite easily but the one revealed in the epilogue I had no idea was coming but did tie up one of my last questions. The ending itself was pretty satisfying although maybe not as much as I would have liked.
Overall a very enjoyable trilogy with a decent ending and plenty of twists.

Title: The Priory of the Orange Tree
Author: Samantha Shannon
Rating: 5/5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Favourite character: Ead
This is one of the best books I’ve ever read, if not the best. The world building and fantasy elements were perfectly crafted and not too difficult to follow as you learn about the world more.
The language and writing is beautiful and fits the story perfectly. Characters have lots of depth and are well developed including their flaws and motivations. Nuance around religion is heavy in this book, which in the end proves how stories can get lost or twisted over time.
A lot of the time in fantasy there is an expecting for women to be inferior but in this story misogyny is not a focus nor is is prevalent within the world itself; I found this very refreshing.
The story itself is written and developed excellently with seemingly separate stories slowly being connected throughout forming a whole picture from little pieces of the puzzle.
I can’t wait to read the second book of this series.

I love how 1 star book reviews are either like a whole analysis of the book and how the plot is bad and the characters are unrealistic and how the author is problematic etc or just "this book sucked lol"

Series: The Hunger Games
Author: Suzanne Collins
The Hunger Games: 4.5/5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️✨
Catching Fire: 5/5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Mockingjay: 5/5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Favourite character: Joanna Mason
This book series holds a very special place in my heart. It was one of the first more adult books I read as a teen and I can honestly say I’ve enjoyed re-reading more than the first time. The amount of in-depth social commentary is astounding. Collins touches on the glorification of violence, capitalism as well as trauma and healing.
The first book I would say is my least favourite, only because a lot of my favourite characters aren’t introduced until the second or third book. Personally I really enjoy the style of writing and the characters have a lot of hidden depth that slowly gets explored through the course of the book. The way the psychological torture that the tributes endure by the Capitol is horrific and this is one of the key messages of the book and the dangers of turning violence into a spectacle.
Catching Fire and Mockingjay are definitely my favourites. I love how twisted and complicated the plot becomes and this reaches a whole new level in these two books. The amount of emotion Suzanne Collins can make me feel always catches me off guard which is one of the reasons I love her writing so much. The language she uses paints the gruesome picture so elegantly and every single death has a meaning.

Title: A Courts of Wings and Ruin
Author: Sarah J. Mass
Rating: 3.5 /5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️✨
Favourite character: The Suriel
I enjoyed reading this book a lot and I think I blew through it in about three days. For me this book is all about fun and enjoying the world and characters. Sometimes this boarders on cheesy but personally I love cheesy books and story telling.
Much of my dislikes about this book are similar to A Court of Mist and Fury; overpowered characters, repetitive writing and the whole concepts of mates. Some of Feyre’s decision making isn’t the best, especially at the beginning, but I was pleasantly surprised that this is acknowledged later. I do feel, however, the consequences could have been focused upon more.
Once I’d finished reading the final conflict scenes it did feel as though most of the characters were never in real danger and almost all of them survive with very little permanent changes. There were several characters that we’re supposedly gone but then came back immediately and to me this felt cheap.
I became quite attached to some characters that looking back I never expected to be find of; for example the Bone Carver and the Suriel. I would have to say my favourite character in this book would be the Suriel. I just find him so sweet and it’s a bit funny the way he shows up to gossip with Feyre.
On the whole I enjoyed reading this a great deal even if there are definitely things that aren’t to my taste in it.
