he cocked his head. "you're not FAR off, actually..." his hands found the bat like an old friend as he swung it at his side to get comfortable with its weight. his eyes widened with anticipation for the fight but also a little apprehension at her choice of weapon. "got a clue where it could be or is that mission number one to find it?" they were pretty surrounded, and if they had to find her dad's gun first, the threat level was spiked considerably. "come on. i'll watch your back."

APPRECIATION. that was... new. when he was king steve, it was an honorary status thanks to his family ties, great hair, and general easygoing personality that demanded nothing of his followers. nowadays as a babysitter slash demogorgon fighter, he didn't know. he was just expected, he guessed. what else was he going to do? it came naturally to step up, and he hadn't really questioned it at any point besides to grumble at himself passively when the kids got on his nerves. steve looked to percy with a slight smile. "anytime," he sounded automatic and empty, but it was sincere. he liked feeling and being useful. steve cracked open the soda he'd gotten for himself and held up the can for a toast. "to the refreshing taste of a classic," he offered in his most cheesy voice.

steve's eyes went wide like she just blew his mind. he shook his head gravely then fixed her with a pitying sort of stare. "that one's ON YOU because i'm a completely shitty friend." a great babysitter, but when it came to relationships that didn't consist of him fixing problems all the time... he was fortunate robin was such a disaster. he was convinced that was the only reason their friendship worked. steve smiled at eden and laughed off his self-depricating joke. his eyebrows knotted at the center of his face as he turned the question and full responsiblity back around on her. "why are we friends?" he used to be really good at collecting friends. now it seemed all he could manage was a gang of kid misfits and one completely out of his league cool girl who will wake up one day to realize he's dead weight. and now, eden. seriously, did he have a sort of cheat code when it came to tricking otherwise aweseome girls into thinking he was worth their time. goofy crooked grin fixed in place at that thought.

steve had been around enough bullshit to sense a wall up between him and barb. he supposed it had always been there, and he didn't help matters BEFORE the events she mentioned. while he couldn't defend himself by saying he was trying his very best now, he wanted to learn. he just didn't know how or where to start. nonconfrontational where he could manage it, all he knew was how to keep things cool and casual. when he was met with her gracious brush off, part of him wanted to accept it. another part, one that was becoming more prominent lately, couldn't let it go.
a voice in the back of his mind whispered he had no right to push her, and he knew he wouldn't get her to open up if he pushed. so, he nodded although there was a well of emotion in his eyes. steve wanted to believe her when she said she didn't blame him altogether. it would be SO EASY to move on, but if steve knew nothing else, he was sure that wasn't true. harrington was done taking it easy. "if there's anything... i know i'm not exactly the person you'd want to turn to, but i... uh, i'm here. okay?"
he dragged his eyes up from his feet where he tried looking for the right words. steve looked at her steadily to let her know he was being absolutely genuine. "and i'm sorry. we don't have to talk about it anymore if you don't want to, but i had to say it because i am. i'm really sorry, barb." hands on his hips, steve stood his ground with a softened expression. he knew this wasn't the olive branch he was hoping for, but it was a start. maybe.

sheetbashed:
Tina hadn’t been back LONG. Clothes had long since been UNPACKED, but getting back into the town had taken a day or two. Something about not wanting to show her FACE to those she had previously told she’d never see again. There had been a bit of a work up to it if she were being honest - but here she was now. Better late than never. And honestly this STOP into the video store was by grand design. She had HEARD he was working here now … and honestly she needed a little ego boost? The grand STEVE HARRINGTON reduced to movie store clerk? It might make her feel better about her own failures across the country, so she stepped in with a BIG smile upon her face and as he hung up the corded phone, she pressed herself against the other side of the counter. Humming softly in response, hands slid across the surface of the counter top and eyes DANCED around the room before meeting his a moment later. He seemed as calm, cool and collected as always but she NOTICED a certain LACKING behind the eyes. Head cocked to the side then before answering his question and a little giggle escaped her in the process. “Het yourself STRANGER. I heard you were working here — didn’t believe it until just now though. You look GOOD.” She’d ignore the question about her little movie night for the time being, because she had yet to DECIDE if she even wanted anything at all.
while he wasn't sure where they stood anymore in the grand scheme of his downfall, steve was fairly confident she'd scratched him off the list as everyone else seemed to from their group of friends. he knew it was dangerous to assume anything, so steve waded into the conversation carefully. a trick he'd remembered from his time being popular. no one could hate you if you didn't have an opinion or pick a side, right? he mirrored her pose on the counter, leaning in but not too close as the surface was wide enough for the both of them. she did bring a certain lightness when she entered the store. harrington was fully prepared for an awkward exchange where he clammered to appear unbothered, but he couldn't help but smile with the energy she brought. there was a reason she was the queen of that sort of thing when they were in school. although they were miles away from the kids they were back then, steve couldn't help but remember her fondly in that respect. "what are you doing here?" he asked in a breathy chuckle. "god, if i could be any place in the world, i think this would be the last place i'd pick." her automated response was too casual, too predictable which made him dig further. he liked to think he left all that shallow polite conversation behind him, so her greeting just wasn't enough for him anymore. "YOU look great," and he meant it.

( platonic ships are just as important as romantic ones! so here’s some sentence starters for all your friendship needs! )
❛ remind me why we’re friends again? ❜
❛ you know you can always talk to me. ❜
❛ do you think we’re friends in every universe? ❜
❛ you’re interesting and different and i like that. ❜
❛ i feel like i can tell you anything. ❜
❛ please don’t ever become a stranger. ❜
❛ i like being alone but i’d rather be alone with you. ❜
❛ you’re important to me, you little shit. ❜
❛ i can always count on you. ❜
❛ here, you can borrow my jacket. ❜
❛ i am this close away from strangling you. ❜
❛ no offense, but you look terrible. ❜
❛ do you think we’ll ever stop being friends? ❜
❛ i found this cool rock that made me think of you. ❜
❛ you can sleep over, it’ll be like when we were kids. ❜
❛ here’s a spare key so you don’t have to keep coming in through the window. ❜
❛ that sounds dangerous. i’m in! ❜
❛ we’re still friends, right? ❜
❛ i don’t have a date, so do you wanna be my plus one? ❜
❛ i heard you were feeling sick, so i made you some soup. ❜
❛ i already said i’m paying. you can buy next time, okay? ❜
❛ you’re the best, you know that? ❜
❛ i’m not hitting you, it’s called platonic bdsm. ❜
❛ you’re more family to me than my own family is. ❜
❛ because i like you. because you’re my friend. ❜
❛ i feel like i can be myself around you. ❜
❛ alright, who am i beating up? ❜
❛ you are literally too stupid to insult. ❜
❛ i’m trying to fix your hair, so hold still. ❜
❛ who needs them. we can have fun on our own. ❜
❛ you deserve every good thing that comes your way. ❜
❛ don’t worry, i’ve got your back! ❜
❛ you’re like, the strongest person i know. ❜
❛ friends don’t lie. ❜
❛ don’t make me regret giving you the aux cord. ❜
❛ you can come over any time. it’s not a problem. ❜
❛ i’m glad to have met you. ❜
❛ you remember the day we became friends? ❜
❛ i know, i know. i’m the best. ❜
❛ no one hurts you and gets away with it. ❜
❛ because you love me! duh! ❜
❛ why do you keep me around? ❜
❛ you’re not getting rid of me that easily. ❜
❛ what would you do without me, huh? ❜
❛ thanks. i really needed this. ❜
❛ what are best friends for? ❜

working the video store wasn't nearly as humiliating as his run at the ice cream parlor in the mall, but it wasn't so far a step up that his heart didn't sink to his stomach whenever one of the members of his old crowd stepped through the entrance. the chime of the greeting bell above the door was the sound of doom as the receiver of the phone dropped an inch on steve's shoulder. "uh, hold on. i have to call you back," he said in a rush before hanging up on the customer. he didn't have their number. they were calling to hear about the new releases to which he'd gotten two and half titles through before hanging up abruptly. eh, if they really needed to know, they'd call back, he assured himself as an afterthought. his body screamed at him to duck, hide behind the counter when tina walked in, but the last ounce of COOL in him refused to stoop to that level. literally. "hi, tina. what brings you to my humble part of town? having a movie night?" arms folded across the counter, he tried to look as relaxed as he wished he felt right then. @sheetbashed

❛ i bought two. here. ❜
❛ i’ve seen you before, walking by. ❜

❛ promise me you won’t overreact. ❜
❛ how can i possibly trust you? after all you’ve done. ❜
❛ how long have you been standing there? ❜
❛ why did you wake me? ❜

❛ i feel safe with you. ❜
❛ i don’t need your help. ❜

❛ no way, i’m not doing that. ❜
❛ i do care. ❜

❛ i have a spare bed. ❜
❛ you’re very kind. some day it’ll get you killed. ❜
❛ you’ll always have a home with me. ❜
❛ of course i care. you’re my family. ❜
❛ you shouldn’t insult people that are bigger than you. ❜
❛ i never wanted to hurt you. ❜

❛ we can just sit here, you don’t have to talk. ❜
❛ did you miss me? ❜
❛ this isn’t just about you. it’s about what’s best for all of us. ❜
❛ you can never admit when you’re wrong! ❜
❛ is this what you wanted? ❜
❛ what are you doing out here by yourself? ❜
❛ sorry to put you through that. i guess i owe you one now. ❜
❛ the only time you talk to me is when you need something. ❜
❛ i’m still learning. ❜
❛ if you have something to say, spit it out. ❜
❛ you… don’t like me very much, do you? ❜
❛ i’m on your side. ❜
❛ i risked my life for you! ❜
❛ whatever you’re going to ask, the answer is no. ❜
❛ you can stay with me. ❜
❛ i just need time. ❜
❛ please don’t do this, don’t act like you care. ❜
❛ who the hell invited you? ❜
❛ what? no witty remark? nothing clever to say? ❜
❛ i just wanted to say i’m sorry. ❜
❛ think of it as a compliment. ❜
❛ do you ever stop being so serious and dull? ❜
❛ it’s rare to see your kind around here. ❜

❛ you look… amazing. ❜
❛ we’re safe, aren’t we? ❜

❛ i thought you’d like this. ❜
❛ it’s too dark, i can’t see anything. ❜
❛ what’s that smug look for? you think you can do any better? ❜
❛ who did you piss off this time? ❜
❛ you should’ve thought about that before you got into a fight. ❜

❛ why do you hate me? ❜
❛ i can’t even trust myself anymore. ❜
❛ i was making sure you weren’t dead, since you never called. ❜
❛ you look awful. what happened? ❜
❛ are you here to kill me? ❜
❛ you know you aren’t allowed in here, right? ❜
❛ was that a friend of yours? ❜
❛ two years later and you haven’t changed. ❜
❛ you look like you just saw a ghost. ❜
❛ nobody tells me what to do. ❜
❛ you’re too scared to do it, aren’t you? ❜
❛ come on. it can’t be that bad. ❜
❛ i hope to repay your kindness someday. ❜
❛ just let me do this for you. ❜
❛ why were they coming after you? ❜
❛ how many people have you killed? how many? ❜
❛ how much do you value your life? ❜
❛ you don’t know when to give up, do you? ❜
❛ don’t lie to me. ❜
❛ i’m not sober enough to talk about this. ❜
❛ have a drink with me. ❜

@zoomher said i’m your favorite, right?
he stood in the open driver's side door of his car, staring over the hood at the pre-teen. his expression the mirror image of a parent at their wits end with their sassy child. why did he agree to drive these shits around? he wasn't even getting PAID for the headache he had to go through on a nearly daily basis. there must have been some unresolved issue underlining this, but steve quickly shook his head of the thought because he was dangerously close to thinking like his mother. "would you get in the car? i will leave a kid on the street, don't think i won't." he pointed at max with a stern look then climbed in himself. buckling his seatbelt, he rolled his eyes and spread his hands over the steering wheel, taking in a calming breath. "unbelievable."

@robinbckley said “ there’s gotta be a better way.”
the sun was bright against a picture perfect blue sky. steve tilted his head against the warmth of it and tried to soak it all in. where they were going and what they had to achieve was a much darker and doomed image that he preferred not to think about. he wanted to admit he agreed with robin, but he stubbornly chose to remain optimistic. "we all agreed on the plan. i know every horror movie has taught us that splitting up is pretty much the worst decisions friends can make in a life or death situation, but there's no way we can all stick together for this. we all have our parts to play." he handed over a filled bottle for her to stuff a bit of cloth with for their section of the big plan. the plan to DEFEAT VECNA.

hospitals made him nervous. not exactly an original fear, but steve grew particularly clumsy inside the monotoned walls with the random machines chiming off down the winding corridors and the likewise dressed nurses moving about, looking after their patients. steve felt like he was constantly IN THE WAY. he kept holding up his hands like he was doing something wrong by being there. the kids went to the snack machine to buy provisions which left him alone in the single room with chrissy. get well cards, balloons and flowers barricaded the two former hawkins royals, cleverly disguising the grave surroundings they found themselves in. vaguely, as a senior when he was in high school, he heard of chrissy. their circles clashed at events like pep rallies and games. he remembered her coming up through the ranks, a cheer captain in training by the time he was on the basket ball team. she might have handed out water once. he couldn't be sure. the smiling girls pretty much looked the same to him at that time in his life, and he flirted and basked in their attention equally.
it had to be a by-product of being popular to have a selective memory. steve remembered the thrill of the game, the lightness of being surrounded by people like him, but when it came to those relationships and the impressions they left on him and his life then... it all was sort of out of focus. distant. looking at the fallen cheerleader wrapped up in casts and gauze in the too big, sterile bed, he wished he could remember something good. she deserved that, at least. his hands were folded in his lap. he wasn't exactly fidgeting, but steve was stiff. sitting too upright, too natural to be natural. a smile settled on his face that suggested he was anything but calm. "it's a good place. they got you set up pretty well. uh, you got cable. which is always a plus. the food... eh, it's not bad. i might have stolen a few bites off a tray on the way in. skipped breakfast. what else? the staff is," he waved his hand around as his eyebrows shot up briefly. "phenomenal. so helpful and polite. i mean, truly. i'm tempted to trade one of them for my mom, you know what i mean? not that my mom is that bad! shit, that came out wrong." he laughed dryly. "save me from myself here, please." @cheercursed

lastsisters:
THERE’S A TWITCH OF HUMOUR. scoff spilling from her lips, marnie brushes over the spot in question and to her relief, the shine of blue remains untarnished. “ i could think of much worse punishments actually but, it looks like you’re off the hook, harrington.” any remnants of bubbling ire dissipate with a soft snort of laughter. “ i didn’t scare you, did i ?”
he stepped away from her car baby, hands raised to show he was no threat. "i bet you could, you deviant." he crossed his arms and leaned against the car opposite hers. steve comfortably assumed his original carefree position. "scare me? nah! i'm real brave and stuff. you should see me. hey, since you're not going to drag me to hell and all that, we still on for dinner?"

"see you on the other side..." ( @callbullshit )
steve leaned down for a closer look at the other side of the gate. where the hell did she go? there were the others blissfully standing inside eddie's trailer waiting to catch nancy who had just gone through. steve glanced behind him as if she'd magically reappear there. ha-ha, only joking. your loss of blood made you think she'd gone first but really she was waiting on you to test the softness of the landing. "shit. hey, what happened?" he asked the others, but they had no clue either. grabbing his head, steve shook it and tried to collect himself. "alright, c'mon harrington! get it together..." he gripped the knotted sheet they used as a rope suspended between both realms. a deep breath and then⏤drop!
he fell... for like way longer than everyone else. he yelled out but his voice echoed into nothingness. just when panic was about to fully settle in, he smacked down onto a hard surface. definitely not a mysteriously stained mattress. hissing in pain, he rolled to his side and climbed up to his feet from all fours. "nancy!" that echo again. all of the sound was being vacuumed into the eerie space around him. this place looked strangely familiar, though. turning in semi-circles, looking for HER. instead, he found a nightmare version of his family home. "nancy..." what the hell, what the hell.
