It’s really interesting to explore how Ford clearly thinks he needs to “redeem himself” for having been tricked, but I really can’t get behind how the narrative seems to agree with him on that point. We were given a fascinating character and situation perfect for discussion of how easily it is to internalize victim-blaming, and it wouldn’t be hard to point out that his view of himself isn’t right (and is a direct result of being taken advantage of in the first place), but the show and J3 agree with the blame instead!

Sorry for the long double-reblog but I have So Many Thoughts on this topic:

You have to look for it more in the show itself, but once you know it’s there, it’s very obvious. There are a lot of instances in the show which depict Ford as having minimal regard for his wellbeing except in terms of his usefulness to others, and it seems to often get played off in-show and/or brushed off by fandom as him being a Quirky Scientist (yes, he is one, and I love that for him, but self-destructive behavior being categorized as that is… odd) or as him needing to “make up for” having been tricked by Bill (a perspective which the writers seem to share, and one that I find extremely distasteful for a lot of hopefully obvious reasons, but that’s neither here nor there).

I love J3, but the end passages seem to set the Stan O’War II trip for psychological disaster, because Ford is viewing it as “repaying” Stan, and Stan could easily view it as having “proved he was worth something” to Ford. I’ve seen some fics which address this very well, using “sailing around the Arctic looking for anomalies” as a great framing device for both of them realizing the faults in their attitudes towards themselves and starting to heal, but I’ve also seen a lot of fics which… don’t. Most of those revolve around one of them having an issue with depression and/or PTSD, but the other is “fine” and is often written to understand their struggle at all. I know this is a common trope of vent-fics, but the fact that it is not at all true to character frustrates me more than is probably reasonable.

All this to say, I very much agree, and that’s a reasonable thing to be bothered by. I can understand why some authors write in such a way, especially with the show favoring Stan’s perspective so extensively, but writing about Stan’s depression and/or trauma does not demand the psychological struggles of other characters to be dismissed.

Absolutely agreed! I sometimes wonder if this difference is because (at least from what I have seen) many people writing fics like that are unfamiliar with Journal 3?

In J3, we see a lot more of Ford’s more blatant symptoms, while the show gives us barely any insight into Ford’s genuine thoughts and experiences. Also, in J3, there are the multiple instances of him saying or implying “I will do this thing (often Fix My Mistake), or die in the process…” which at least reads to me very much as passively suicidal intent

In the end, I think the reason that these fics have Ford not understanding depression is far more Doylian than Watsonian: the authors, projecting onto Stan, need another character in the story who is Too Perfect and Wouldn’t Understand that they could explain their disorder to, and that the other would listen and be willing to learn

I will be honest guys, the Red portrait of king Charles is gorgeous asdfghjkl

it's a bad portrait. Like. Objectively. It does the opposite of what's intended. It looks like the painter is insulting him. If it was in a contemporary gallery with no context you would see it immediately as the ambivalent criticism of Charles's reign, how he fades into the overwhelming red background as a tiny little figure, small and insignificant, insufficient for the clothes he's wearing. It reminds my of Goya's portraits, how they were so 'realistic' that they ended up making these great figures look pathetic to the viewer. So these are our rulers?

the sheer novelty. the surprise and shock, the kinda cunt it's serving for no reason. I. I love it. It's an incredible portrait by Jonathan Yeo. By the sheer fact that Charles, the man, is impossible to portray as greater than man because he's just such a nothingburger of a dude. So a portrait made to make him look huge and interesting made him be swallowed in red brushstrokes. The butterfly, that reminded me immediately of " we will all laugh at guilded butterflies", draws more attention than him. It looks like an omen. It looks like a warning in all this red. Something is not right here.
